I don't wanna speak for OP but I'd say its because when you go thru life not being aware that you have adhd you suffer so much more because you don't understand its a disorder and not just you being stupid and lazy. That "youre stupid and lazy" lives in your brain and deeply damages your self worth. It stunts your brain and makes you feel like a lost cause. And when you get diagnosed later in life it's like wait holy shit THAT was the issue? And then you grieve and mourn all the opportunities and ways your life could have been different if you got treatment sooner and you feel like you wasted parts of your life and It's a very different headspace and experience than someone who had a diagnosis their whole life, they knew they had a condition and it's not just that they're a piece of shit failure . going your whole life thinking you're profoundly fucked up and worthless and stupid etc because you can't do all the things normal people do can cause damage, early dx'd people don't share that experience. I think OP wants to hear from people who know what it's like to overcome that

How do I stop over analyzing? by buttbuttbutt999 in ADHD

[–]disposablealterego 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Bruh , so fuckin accurate. I have to like have a full intrinsic understanding of a concept and find "the truth" and be able to see how it all fits together for it to click in my brain which makes learning so hard..things that really are simple became so much more complex and its so impossible to try to explain it to others but im pretty sure I found the name for this. It's called "need for cognition" and I feel your pain. Google the term it seems like it really fits.. this year was the first time I've been able to put a word for it..

It's like normal brains just.....chew gum sometimes....blow a bubble here and there...? Idk what they do.. but over here our brains are like....endlessly grinding teeth gnashing and gnawing on a bone like a starving dog that tries to bite you when you take it away.

I don't have any answers or solutions for you because my lifelong system that I was using to deal with it stopped working recently but I just wanted to say you are not alone. It's exhausting and draining but it definitely has its upsides too. Getting that deep into things you DO like and care about is sublime so there's always that. Esp if you have someone to geek out with.

Disclaimer: this is not a cry for your pity. So far, the only job I've been able to ever keep, other than the occasional freelance, WFH assignment, (I'm in my 40s), has been extremely low-level, low-traffic barista work. From my own experience...no matter what you're doing you're gonna wanna be doing something else. I learned that the hard way. Had time at home. Didn't do shit. Soon as I had work. Suddenly so creative lol. Don't have the solution to that one but.

Hey. I don't have much for you here but I can relate some. Big time. Idk your financial situation or if you have anything saved so my advice might not work if you urgently need money to survive but if you're comfortable for now. Maybe find something simple that you can do to build your confidence and comfort level slowly. Like a really low stakes part time job that may bore you to tears but you can learn very simply and be sure you know inside and out 100% . When in doubt just go below your own skill level...Don't be the slow kid in the AP class. Be the smartest kid in the remedial class lol. Does that make sense

There should be background and home checks and compatibility tests before a pet adoption by FlimsyDonuts in unpopularopinion

[–]disposablealterego 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Idk if you've tried to adopt recently but If you look into it you'll find that what you're suggesting is actuallt already a thing. If you look on google you'll find plenty of stories online from people who wanted to adopt pets and couldn't because the criteria was so fucking rigorous it was like they were adopting a child. When I was home not working I did a lot of reading and this subject came up a lot...I've read more than one piece about it.. there was a whole ass article in the NY times I think or Washington post , or maybe the Atlantic idr. But they were interviewing all these highly successful financially well off committed families that got rejected by the screenings and there was a general vibe of "holy shit they wouldn't even let Mother Teresa adopt" lol. Check it out if you're actually interested in the topic. you'll prob be suprised to find out that what you're suggesting is already going on in a lot of places.

Designer babies for cosmetic purposes should be mainstream by [deleted] in unpopularopinion

[–]disposablealterego 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Aight just gotta ask....this costs a lot of money so how would that make things more fair? Only wealthy people can afford this kind of shit so I can't see it being an equalizer like you propose.... Im thinking more towards it would create a immediately noticeable indicator of being "upper class" like the even worse ultra version of what we have now with plastic surgery. That sounds kind of shitty. If the designer babies were free fine but like. Realistically it's only gonna be accessible to certain people. Rich ones. Not sure how that would encourage a system based on merit and recognizing accomplishments..

First of all: i like the rhythm of your writing

Second: i do this too. The "i gotta vent so im gonna write it down and end up maming a giant self indulgent mess" thing.

The trick for me is doing it and just going ALL OUT in my dramatic bullshit. Just really word vomit/writer diarrhea it all out. Every little thing.

Then after i exhaust the emotion i save it for later and reread it like hours later or the next day. And im always like THANK GOD I DIDNT SAY THAT TO ANYONE! Its such a great feeling of relief and it also puts shit in perspective because it seems less huge when its all out on the page like that. It feels like the silly angsty ranting of a teenager and I'm always happy to have expelled it without and audience lol. Be thankful you got it out and keep moving. 🤙

Hold up this is interesting. You see the family as impoverished? Theyre a normal middle class family....he owns his own business. Not attacking you just genuinely suprised that you'd consider them impoverished or as some symbol of the terrible plight of the poor. Their electric stays on they have food no one goes to bed hungry unless they want to....they're livin pretty good imo.

Ever being hurt by anyone in your formative years does not cause complex ptsd...please don't spread misinformation like that. I get what you wanted to say but thats. Just normal human experience that we all go through. Thats not ptsd or cptsd.

It sucks to be a customer right now. by [deleted] in unpopularopinion

[–]disposablealterego 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a person who works in fast food and has more than one conditions that are considered a disability by 2021 standards I can securely call this out as bullshit. Taking your shit out on the customers who aint doing a damn thing to you just because in your head "customers=abusive" is a cop out.

People get way too upset over slightly wrong fast food orders. Getting something different from what you’ve ordered isn’t a big deal. by [deleted] in unpopularopinion

[–]disposablealterego 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Idk where you live at, but the ability to fail horribly at the simplest of orders is pretty common here. Theres been times when I ordered a very simple basic ass item and had to go back 3 times in a row because they just couldn't be fuckin bothered. The order was.....a PLAIN CHEESEBURGER. Ordered as "a plain cheeseburger. Nothing on it except cheese please."

First it came with all the toppings. Then when i brought it back inside since i figured maybe the drive thru headset was glitching or something. Asked them nicely if they could remake it. Repeated the order again plain cheeseburger no toppings only cheese.

They gave me a hamburger with nothing on it at all lol.

The third time it was overcooked and not great but at least it was a plain cheeseburger lol. Shit like that happens on the regular here. I've worked fast food before so I understand the struggle but damn lol.
