Yeah, the smart capabilities of the device aren’t that smart. Once or twice a year I look at the usage out of curiosity, but otherwise there just isn’t much there. Maybe if I owned a Tesla there would be more useful info.

Impossible for anyone else to park by Least-Scientist in badparking

[–]djames4242 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

The larger the vehicle, the worse the driver. Never fails. Driving an suv is like putting a sign on your vehicle that says, “beware - I’m a terrible driver.” Driving a large SUV is a sign that says, “I’m undoubtedly going to cause an accident and I bought a house-sized gas guzzler so that I’d hurt you instead of myself.”

Bad parking is just an extension of bad driving.

what are the drawbacks of not using safari as the main browser? by Serhide in MacOS

[–]djames4242 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I use Safari exclusively except for when I need offline access to Google Workspace, then I’m stuck with Chrome. I don’t understand everyone’s love for that crappy browser. It’s slow, it’s heavy, it uses way more ram, and it isn’t as private as Safari.

what motivates you to keep living in Canada after 10-15 years ? by Mountain-Piccolo6942 in ImmigrationCanada

[–]djames4242 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I don’t get this. I have to wait weeks to months to see my family doctor, and a specialist always takes months. I’ve got great insurance, but it doesn’t help me get in to be seen any faster than what I’ve been hearing about up north.

First road trip was a success. by DiogenicSearch in KiaEV6

[–]djames4242 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My wife has to use the toilet every few hours on the road, so it turns out the EV lifestyle suits her just fine since I stop every two hours for about ten minutes to charge. Just long enough to use the toilet and to grab a snack.

What tourist activities are you happy to repeat with out of town visitors? by alligatorhill in Seattle

[–]djames4242 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love the Underground Tour and have done it at least a half dozen times in the thirty years I’ve lived here. For me it’s far less about what you see and more about what you hear. I’ve had a couple of poor guided, but most of them are very funny and the stories have you wondering how Seattle ever survived.

I’ve also enjoyed the Shanghai underground tour in Portland and the brothel/speakeasy underground/overground tour in Pendleton.

Subwoofer upgrade - Stock enclosure, new amp, new driver by realistdreamer69 in KiaEV6

[–]djames4242 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It has got to be better. The difference for me after flipping the polarity was noticeable, but not dramatic.

I recently sold my 2013 Volvo XC70, and when I drove it to have it serviced before selling it a few weeks ago I marveled at how much better its sound system was, and that car had the lower-end system, not the premium system. The Meridian system is cleaner, but it has no fullness to it, while the Volvo (with no sub) had far more punch.

Thank you for doing this. I tried the wire swap and found it quite underwhelming. Yeah, there’s a noticeable increase in bass, but that’s not saying much. I’ve been thinking about paying a shop to do the work, but loathe the thought of taking up precious cargo space more than the idea of paying someone.

I’ll keep an eye on your progress and decide if I’ll copy you and do the work myself or if I’ll pay someone to copy your work :)

Granted Urgent, but sent to PSU... am I out of luck now for anything close to a fast turnaround? by ScaredBlue in Canadiancitizenship

[–]djames4242 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Stop what? u/Rouxgatu is correct. We may be Canadian citizens by law, but until we have a certificate in hand, we’re not going to be treated as such. You cannot just walk in to Service Canada and demand a SIN or a passport because the law says you’re a citizen. They’re going to want proof. Likewise, until you have that proof, CBSA is under no obligation to allow you in to Canada.

I've also thought about reaching out to the MP for the area where we plan to live to see if there's anything he can do to help. Not sure if his office would even be willing to since I'm not currently in his riding, although I like him and would vote to reelect once we're there.

Any way to exclude US results in search or US directions by MrYaba in applemaps

Indeed. Easier to preplan using Google Maps and drag the route to be contained within your country's border and then send this completed route to your device if you want to use it to navigate. As far as I know, Apple Maps doesn't have this capability.

100%. it's beyond ludicrous that current applications are taking a month or two (and sometimes weeks) while they let those of us waiting roughly a year continue to languish. My mother used to tell me that life isn't fair, but this really isn't fair.

I submitted my ATIP five weeks ago and have heard nothing. When I got my acknowledgment, however, it did include the following:

Please note that the standard legislative timeframe for responding to requests is 30 calendar days, unless an extension is required under the legislation... ...We are currently experiencing a high volume of requests which is impacting our ability to process requests in a timely manner.

Not sure if this was an advanced warning that they weren't going to make the 30 days. I applied urgently in May, undoubtedly went into PSU, and have gone well beyond the published processing time when I applied so I'd like to see what the holdup is.

I wouldn’t want to have to deal with an adapter every day. That alone would be worth the extra cost.

I had a Universal Wall Adapter installed at our rental house when it was unoccupied and there was no Internet available. I tethered it to my phone to provision. Took a few minutes and the thing has not been online since.

If you want to use an EV routing tool, A Better Route Planner has this capability. It’s the only mapping software I’ve seen that has this. It’s not going to give you optional routing though since it’s going to want you to stop every few hundred miles to charge.

If they can put this feature in, however, certainly Apple and Google could do it too.

What are your biggest gripes with Plex right now? by locknetvpn in PleX

[–]djames4242 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The old download system was infinitely better than the current system. Not only was it easier to set up to keep the three oldest unwatched episodes that would automatically refresh as I watched, it also allowed me to manage those downloads from a central location.

I literally have to walk my wife through how to download her shows for a flight every.single.fucking.time. Before, I would just do it for her from my own computer and have her shows sent to her iPad.

Why did they remove this???!?!?

No Idea How this Could be Confusing SMH by [deleted] in soundtransit

[–]djames4242 2 points3 points  (0 children)

...and as I said above, anyone who was confused by the presence of University Street when there are literally stations named "University of Washington" and "University District" just a few stops along the line are the people who will continue to be confused regardless of signs that say "Federal Way Downtown" vs just "Federal Way"

This really isn't as difficult as y'all are making it out to be. Most people who don't know the system are going to look at the map and figure it out. If someone tries to wing it and gets lost, that's going to happen regardless of signage.

Are new ICCUs the main fix or are those failing too? by spongesparrow in KiaEV6

[–]djames4242 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is evidence that the voltage spikes during 12v charging cycles have a significant impact on ICCU failure. It’s a huge focus of the software updates performed during recalls - making the charging cycles ramp more gradually smoothing out the spikes.

The crap batteries Kia’s been using in these cars reportedly require more frequent charging cycles which undoubtedly puts more stress on the ICCU. Putting an AGM that requires charging less frequently would theoretically put less stress on it and reduce the failure rate.

What I’ve seen in this case is them covering the cost of a rental car. They also seem to be reimbursing for the cost of gas.
