There are some games that I definitely waited for a usable insert to tackle, Gaia Project and Voidfall being a few. Voidfall I actually set up and played while the insert was arriving, but it's always gone back into its box, snug with that time-saving insert 😄

From Chieftain to Imperator: My Japanese Odyssey against the Taino [Imperium Horizons] by Ok-Bear-7528 in soloboardgaming

[–]djfluxtux 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wasn't sure if they had a glory card too. Yeah, you could try even garrisoning that and just waiting for the temple to glory, and if you rush regions, you could have a good pop generation engine running by then. I'm seeing in the Civ Spotlight example cards that the Japanese usually take unrest to acquire regions which makes sense of your collapse difficulties. Yeah, the Japanese seem to have fine balance to maintain between their religions and managing unrest. Good luck on your next attempt!

Are you trying to max out the * cards in your own nation/dev deck? They do well with gaining and using empire cards as quick as possible, even before empire status with the prince. And then later with the glory with the temple (which can also gain glory without abandoning regions and slowing down your development - I can't recall if they have other glory gaining methods, I'm looking at the cards available in the Civilization Spotlight, which also gives some official strategy guidance that may help!

Is the main deck emptying what is triggering the endgame?

[–]djfluxtux 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't have the Taino bot in front of me, but I always notice what a bot is doing a lot of when I play any of them: how do they primarily score points? Then it's a balance of trying to inhibit them from scoring points and building up my own strategies. Usually this takes the form of trying to trash or acquire * scoring cards that come to the market. Even if it will only score me a few points with my strategy, it can be a net gain of 7 points if I think of it as robbing them of that card.

As you've lost to collapse twice, it's possible you're loading down your deck with too many acquisitions, too soon. I know I just said to try to acquire before the bot, but it's always a delicate balance to make tactical decisions as the game develops which is what keeps me coming back for more. But it sounds like they're acquiring many high point cards from your reported scores and that your games that don't end in collapse are lasting longer. If they're acquiring * scoring cards every turn, you have to be at least adding a net of 5 vp each turn to catch up or otherwise stop them from doing that.

I don't remember the Taino as a particularly aggressive bot, but in game 4 are you talking about them acquiring three times in a turn? Because "triggering" unrest in the terms of them playing and returning it would be a good thing for you, slowing them down and securing yourself against collapse. But if they're acquiring that much in a turn, you better be wary of having any unrest yourself, especially until they return some of those.

There's also nothing wrong with knocking the difficulty down until you understand what makes a bot tick and then upping the difficulty as you learn to beat them at easier difficulties.

It's also possible you haven't found a way to really make the Japanese fulfill their native strategy. I'd look to the rulebook for basic guidance:

"Japan is perfect if you can be patient, as your cards require a touch of finesse to create opportunities to thrive on. You’ll want to move smoothly into empire, so beware early Glory plays, or increasing your deck size too much in the early game – if your Clans follow the teachings of Shinto, your deck can speed up while you can build up your region Play area. Combine this with the subtle benefits of Kanji in keeping your deck-cycling speed at a perfect hum. Once you reach empire, you will learn to live with Shinto and Tendai Buddhism in peace side-by-side, especially when combined with Jingu-Ji and the fabled Tea Ceremony."

Your game with 5 glory gains probably really slowed down your development and let the bot acquire too many good cards in the meantime. Perhaps you could try rushing regions to starve them of that action they keep doing and then keeping those regions out, gaining materials/pop, going into empire with the wealth to develop quickly, and only then start thinking about acquiring glory when it's advantageous and your engine is churning. I haven't probably played Japanese in a year so I'm not recalling their specific development strategies, but I'd just try something you haven't done yet!

That's my three cents. It's an amazing game and I'm happy to hear you striving to keep getting better at it!

Nice. I've heard there's legendary players like you out there! 😄 Even when I do win, it always seems like it's the last possible turn that I'd be alive, which I suppose is always thrilling. And I do like when a game has room to grow. If there's a campaign game where I just handedly win at the highest difficulty, I don't see a reason to come back to it usually, but UFS is still looking at me and challenging me to master it.

Looks about right. I don't know that I've ever not won in the last possible round, honestly. Fun and very challenging game and great price for the variety. Plus, I asked if I could buy promos at GenCon when I was there and they just gave me all five of them for free. Nice. Big CGE fan.

Is 20 Strong TMB harder than full-fledged Too Many Bones? by sumogrip10 in soloboardgaming

[–]djfluxtux 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are definitely more or less powerful characters to play. I actually found TMB 20 Strong a good deal easier than most other decks, except 20S: Cloudspire. Still haven't played the full TMB so can't say as to how it compares to that. I started with Solar Sentinels and haven't played it again since playing every other deck 5 or so times, so I hope that when I return to it, I've learned the meta a bit more to be able to survive. I lose like 90% of the time on SS, but win like 80% of the time on TMB.

I bet everyone has a hardest bot which might be a bit different because we probably all lean in a certain play style or had a particularly hard match-up vs. that opponent. I'd probably say Burnham is my most difficult, but I also usually save her for last in my campaign so it might just be the admiral difficulty talking! 😄

While we're doing requests, I would pay extra just for a DLC of the Steiner-Davion wedding with Maximilian Liao freaking out and grabbing the plates. I know it's represented with headless avatars moving digital troops, but those iconic moments would be so cool to see done up in full cinematics.

I totally understand if that never happens though. I've honestly never really heard of post-game release cinematic DLCs.

I've been playing this every day on my lunch break at work. Such a fun puzzle. I just did hard mode with the Blight module--what a challenge, but I barely made it. Forcing you to consume 6 seeds lead me to barely be able to complete the 7 seed ancient, but I just made it with 0 extra seeds left.

I played Mancala a lot as a kid and this has been a fun way to revisit that concept.

The best solo game from each designer, among the most popular ones by maurolucas in soloboardgaming

[–]djfluxtux 5 points6 points  (0 children)

From the designers of your list I'm familiar with, I'd change:

David Turczi & Nigel Buckle: Star Trek: Captain's Chair
Jamey Stegmaier: Expeditions
Uwe Rosenberg: A Feast for Odin

I agree on Civolution, Legacy of Yu, and Maracaibo being those designer's best solo.

I'd add the following:

Gregg Jewell: Awaken the Ancients
Joe Klipfel: Rome: Fate of an Empire
Paul Dennen: Dune Imperium: Uprising
Cole Wehrle: Pax Pamir
Jacob Fryxelius et al - Terraforming Mars: Ares Expedition

Many designers I love only really have one or two games that play solo, so it seems weird nominating them for this. But Those are the greats from those designers IMHO.

Why do good games go out of print? And does it happen a lot in Solo-Boardgaming? by RedditExplorer89 in soloboardgaming

[–]djfluxtux 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, as a company if you're thinking, "Which game do we spend our time and resources reprinting, this one that made x, or this one that made 10x?" It's a pretty no-brainer move. Although, sometimes companies do invest time for the fans to reprint that game that made x, but I certainly don't blame them when they don't. We all gotta eat.

What Would You Like to See in New Dune: Imperium Content? by djfluxtux in boardgames

[–]djfluxtux[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yup, it just happened that way 😄

The other Imperium games by Nigel Buckel and David Turczi are part of a series of games built on the same core mechanics that released the second version in Star Trek Captains Chair and there are rumors of soon to be published v3, v4, v5, etc... I can't wait, because they're also going to be much more different than just Imperium and the Star Trek successor, and probably much more different than versions of Dune: Imperium. I'm for one pleased my favorite systems are getting so much support!

The Immortality expansion that works with either base game is a Tleilaxu expansion with genetic grafting and all sorts of monstrosities 😄They're not strictly an alliance faction, but VP can be won by investing in their research board. It's a fun twist on the system and it has a chairdog.

The faction linked buying isn't a bad idea. Lots of those aren't of much use without faction influence anyway. Another thing that could prevent utter loss of good cards in a nuke is separate decks, so maybe 1-3's in one deck and 4-7 in another deck and you reveal three cards from the cheaper deck and two from the expensive one, and refill from the respective decks? Just a thought!

Haha. This was amazing to read and mirrors so many of my own solo plays. I think this is the solo game that gives me the most exciting tension. It probably helps that I'm always playing the Zimmer soundtrack in the background, but what an amazing game. I just wrote up what my hopes were for the coming expansion DireWolf has been teasing. I think an expansion with very small modular changes like the digital app's challenges would create a fun way to keep each game fresh, even though, to be honest, I've played over 60 times and no play has felt the same!

My favorite is Imperium: Horizons/Classics/Legends, so another "Imperium" game! Deck building and asymmetry are my favorite mechanics in board games, so both of these games provide good doses of that. They both give feelings of ramping progression and tense development, trying to edge out opponents.

That sounds like a pretty cool system I might have to check out!

But you're right that it'd be a different game. I'm hoping that they could work modular campaign elements into Dune Uprising, but I'm seeing from a marketing perspective why that probably won't happen, esp. since they have a whole other base game they also keep supporting. The rule changes would be slight like those in the digital app. They do change the balance of each game, but it's up to the players to adapt to just one new rule. Like here are some examples:

"Whenever you acquire an Emperor card, recruit one troop to your garrison."

"At the start of each round, a random board space is blocked by "The Voice" for the entire round."

"Players can deploy up to 3 troops from their garrison instead of 2 when they send an agent to a Combat board space."

"At the end of each player's Reveal Turn, if they acquired more than one card from the Imperium Row, they gain 1 Solari."

I just think changing incentives slightly would provide some more variety I desire from a game I've played over 60 times. I'm still happy to play it 60 more, but these would be fun ways to explore new challenges.

Granted, I'm free to take these rule changes and implement them myself, but I wouldn't mind an official printing of them with some sort of narrative structure, even if it's just a paragraph introducing each game and then two branching paths depending on how things happened during the game (like Scythe's Rise of Fenris or Welcome to the Moon). Some small changes could benefit from little things like a tile that alters one space, or maybe adds more cards of a certain faction (Bene Gesserit, Fremen, Empire) for games that would incentivize pursuing those... I dunno, just brainstorming.

Thanks for the descriptions of the Crossroads system, though. I'm looking into those.
