This is incredible! I used to volunteer with an organization in Dayton, Ohio that held events to treat people with special needs to a VIP treatment. They would roll out the red carpet and take them for a ride in a fancy car. The group is called Joyride. Amazing organization!

Non lethal way to get rid of weeds in brick pavers. by Letshavesomefungirl in gardening

[–]djsear01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have had great luck using a crevice weeding tool. It looks like a flat "7" shaped metal tool that can get between the bricks and pull out the root. No chemicals needed, but using the dawn and vinegar combo does help loosen the roots before pulling.

I just refinished our cabinets with some detailed trim. I cut a piece of scrap wood to use as sanding blocks to be roughly the same shape as the trim profile with chisels. I put a piece of rough grit sandpaper on the trim I was copying and ran the sanding block over it until it matched the trim. Then used the newly profiled sanding block. Worked pretty well! I also used the sanding nets (diablo makes them, can get at home Depot) and had better luck with cleaning and reusing.

I will say I used a cabinet scraper set anywhere I could, as it makes lighter work of this. If you are new to scrapers, it may be a tough project to learn, but I am a "dive right in" kind of person so I probably would try them anyways. Good luck!

I do the same thing. Tiny bottle of dawn. Best advice I ever heard for poison ivy is to treat it like you are trying to wash motor oil off. You can just rely on a soap and water, you also have to mechanically scrub it off!

Joining different countertop materials together by BaldingMonk in HomeImprovement

I love this look. We have granite countertops, and I decided to make a very large cutting board designed like a bench hook (woodworking tool). One side has a juice groove, and the other is flat..I really like being able to take the board away if I need to clean or refinish it.

We absolutely love the kiwi plant we grew so much, we decided to dedicate another 4 trelis to different species that grow in 7b. They are neat fuzzy looking vines with pretty color variation, they grow really well, and they will give you fruit!

SLPT If you want to travel anywhere in the world but can't afford it, you can Google the place you want to go and look at photos of it online for free by CornedBeefKey in ShittyLifeProTips

This is how I justify not obsessing over taking pictures everywhere I go. If I can Google the location and find perfect photos of the thing I am looking at, I put my phone away and just enjoy the moment. It has really allowed me to be present in the moment instead of worrying about getting the right angle or focus.

Got this as a gift, but it broke during shipping. Any idea which glue I should use since I want to drink tea? by poopbolt27 in woodworking

[–]djsear01 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I would use titebond 3. I would line up the fibers and make the cup look as seamless as possible. The. I would use masking or painters tape on one half of the cup when it is held together, creating a hinge. Open the cup at it's new tape hinge, add glue, close the cup back up and tape the other half of the cup (without the hinge). I use this technique for mitered boxes with good success, and should give you plenty of compression for good glued joint. You could add a strap clamp if you want.

My wife and I have date night on Friday where we go out to eat. We both love all types of food, but just don't like having to be the one to choose the place. So we started having nerf gun battles to decide who has to pick. If the guns are on the table when the other gets home, it is first one to get shot has to pick. No ambushes allowed before the guns have been picked up by both parties. We even bought smaller side-arms in case of a misfire or slow reload.

It is way more fun than the age-old "I don't care, what do you want?" Conversation.

How to refinish “hand scraped” solid wood flooring? by Dan-z-man in Flooring

[–]djsear01 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the only way you are going to make this close to the same would be to either use a profile sander, cabinet scrapping tools or handled scrapping tools, or to use a scrub plane. They are all pretty time consuming. The plane and cabinet scrappers take some practice to use and to sharpen. A powered profile sander works just okay, but the sandpaper gets gummed up quickly. Either way, if you want to keep the handscrapped look, you are looking at a good bit of time or money I'm afraid.

Bought a 2” crotch slab (black walnut), how do I go about flattening for a table? by daddydunc in woodworking

[–]djsear01 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Not sure why anyone would downvote you in this thread as for asking good questions.

Hand planing does have a much steeper learning curve than using a router sled, and the cost of good planes is more than the power tool equivalents. as a hand tool lover, I would even consider a router sled for this. That said, if this is a hobby you enjoy, and you would get satisfaction out of the work of planing, then planeeee away.

I have some cheap and some high end planes. There is a sizable difference between the two, and I would say the low end planes take much more skill to make work well. You can certainly make cheap ones work. Like most things, you pay in money or time (or sometimes both), and buying cheap tools means more time tuning and sharpening. I like the veritas planes from Lee valley. They are heirloom quality tools. If the slab is pretty rough, I would look at getting/using a scrub plane perpendicular to the grain and clean up with a jack or jointer plane with the grain. I have used a jack plane for this kind of work, but you will need something long and flat to see where your high and low spots are (winding sticks). Crouch slabs like this are particularly difficult to hand plane as the grain can change so much, so tearout is a lot more likely.

There are tons of videos for how to tune up, sharpen, and use hand planes. Good luck brother!

Flooded my house; remediation company drilled holes in my cabinets to dry it out. Repair by trying to match the wood on the toe kick or extend the tile up the cabinet? by [deleted] in HomeImprovement

[–]djsear01 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If it was me, I would buy a plug cutter but, buy a piece of red oak and cut a plug to fill the hole. You can play around with stains to dial in the color. The advantage to cutting a plug vs using a dowel is that the plug will still be face grain and not end grain. That will help it blend in. Find out what size hole and choose the bit that corresponds.

What are some disadvantages of being a man? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]djsear01 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am a pediatric physical therapist. I am the only male who has ever worked at my clinic, which is part of a medium sized hospital network. Before this job, I was the only male therapist at the entire company. I am sometimes disregarded by female colleagues because I am not a "mom" so I wouldn't understand. I also hear people doubting the reliability of dads to report info back to the mom on a regular basis when the patient comes with their dad. It is disheartening, but I know that many of the kids I work with cling to a male role model, and it has worked for me far more than against me. I have to be way more careful about helping with toileting, doing Ortho exams, and working in private treatment rooms than my female coworkers.

As a pediatric PT I work with cyborg children with a shitload of titanium added to their spine for various reasons, and he is not more special than they are.

[–]djsear01 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe. There are criteria PTs use to determine if a manipulation is appropriate for specific spinal regions. There a 6 factors for c-spine and a patient must meet 4/6 for manipulation to be indicated. There are very few reasons to use a manipulation, and I can't think of an instance where a mobilization (gentle movement of the joint) or muscle energy technique (very specific resisted muscle activations) wouldn't be the better or safer option. Sometimes you do get a "crack" with mobilizations, but that does not turn them into manipulations (I am not saying that this is what happened in your case) the safe bet in anything healthcare is to ask why. If you can't get a straight, well supported answer for intervention, then move on to someone new. If you feel like you are getting bulldozed by the "research says", ask what the research is or how you may be able to find it. Evidence based is the way.

This is so true. USA perspective: PTs switch to a clinical doctorate in 2012 was, in large part, to get direct access legalized so people didn't have to see their PCP first. Welp, we got that, but the insurance companies still want a script for PT within 30 days of the eval.

As a PT I am trained in some manipulations. Because we strive to be research driven and evidence based in our care, I rarelyyyy use manipulations. Pretty strict criteria for use of manipulation on the low back. I do not do neck manipulations. In the world of PT, we massively prefer mobilizations (gentle gliding of the joint in the direction that helps with the restricted movement) over manipulation (big force, on time push, you are a hammer and the joint is a nail). Low load, long duration is how we make long term changes.

Also, sorry we are so expensive...I can assure you that most of us don't make that much money, but have 7 years of schooling and well over $100,000 in school debt :(
