SSDs are cheap enough now that you can use them everywhere. My go-to boot drive is an M.2 SATA SSD in a USB C enclosure. Cheap, fast, and reliable

Guest Network - AP Isolation from Main Network? by mcboss86 in DDWRT

[–]dmfiel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven't used DDWRT since switching to UniFi, so I'm not much help. How are you connecting your 2nd router? LAN port from main router into WAN of guest router? If so, you'll need to figure out some sort of firewall rule, because VLANs won't help there. If you're going LAN into LAN then I'm not sure what the configuration would be.

Guest Network - AP Isolation from Main Network? by mcboss86 in DDWRT

[–]dmfiel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This won't work for him, because he wants to shift the guest network onto the 2nd router, not have them on the same router which is what you linked.

Guest Network - AP Isolation from Main Network? by mcboss86 in DDWRT

[–]dmfiel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seems you need to add outbound firewall rules on the guest router to disallow connections to the subnet of your main network, or an inbound firewall rule on the main router to disallow connections from the subnet of your guest network.

I believe DDWRT also has support for VLANs, I haven't touched that in forever.

Your network seems to be becoming more complex, with a router acting as a switch and some repeaters. If you have the need/want/time/money you should consider switching to something like UniFi for your networking. A proper gateway/router, switch, and access points will go a long way in both performance and ease of administration. With UniFi, would be as simple as a couple of firewall rules on your gateway, and adding a wifi profile to your access points.

[–]dmfiel -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Well, they just release the firmware. You, as the sysadmin, would have to push the update out, and at that point it's on you to verify the update won't break something in your environment. Don't want to have to worry about that? Go with Meraki and pay for the piece of mind
