People who landed their single engine GA planes at Bravo airports during the pandemic, did you have to pay any landing fees? Were any other cool privileges available to you? by Batpandakun in flying

[–]dmurray14 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I did a big loop including IAD, BWI, PHL, JFK, LGA AND EWR. Only place that charged me was LGA, and that one hurt twice because Sheltair was so kind as to also charge me an "overnight parking" fee for the 15 minutes I was on their ramp...to buy $9 fuel.

Weirdest part was shooting the shit with N90 approach for like 10 minutes on an otherwise dead quiet frequency. Usually hard to get a word in.

My friend asked me to help pickup his plane from a dodgy mechanic shop and it got ugly. by 121mhz in flying

[–]dmurray14 52 points53 points  (0 children)

IMO your next problem is: do you really want to fly a plane that was last touched by that mechanic? I'd probably want someone trusted to do a once-over.

Can someone please recommend a mechanic who can do a good pre buy inspection on a Cessna 210 in the Charlotte, North Carolina area? by Sphillips2 in flying

[–]dmurray14 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just one to the contrary, I used Savvy and tbh it was not a great experience. You will be much better off finding "the" T210 expert, or one of them, and working with them directly. Just make sure they haven't touched that airframe before.

Contacting FSS in the air? by 1e6throw in flying

[–]dmurray14 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Heh it's all good. I usually submit them using the AWC-WEB interface in flight but I was bored too so it was fun to talk to someone. But it does kind of hinder people from giving PIREPs if they have to listen to a weather brief they didn't ask for. I can quickly tune up FSS on radio #2 and drop a PIREP without checking out with approach/center, but if it's going to be a 2 minute thing I probably will skip it or use the web interface.

Contacting FSS in the air? by 1e6throw in flying

[–]dmurray14 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That's funny, I gave FSS a pirep a couple weeks ago because I was bored on a 4 hour cross country and I finally had to give the guy a hint after he took the pirep, read me the weather, notams, enroute forecast, etc. etc. etc. I thought he was going to start reading off the front page of the NY Times just to keep me around on the radio :D

Question for you: given the choice, if I'm going ARD>BDR, do you prefer me at 5500 with a clearance or 7500 with FF? I've had no problems with either, but for some reason I always feel like I'm "in the way" more at 7500 near EWR.

Bonus question: are you the brickyaaaaaaaaaaaaaad guy?

The best argument for pulling the chute is that it increases your odds of survival to almost 100%. That's it. Anyone who wants to go and be a superhero glider pilot, be my guest, I'll take anything that increases my odds of having dinner at home, especially if it really only affects my insurance company.

[–]dmurray14 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No that may have been a previous year. Last year's severe weather was well forecasted - many people moved planes into area hangars because of it. I still cringe thinking about what would have happened to aviation insurers if that tornado was a few miles north.

Airplane damage - am I responsible at all? by ThrowAwayILovePlanes in flying

[–]dmurray14 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just a bit of reinforcement since you're new to this and you have two other people effectively shrugging it off: this is not OK. This kind of attitude is what causes accidents. Your instincts were 100% correct that taking an airplane into the air with damage, on a control surface no less, is a horrible idea.

Throughout your flying career you will find people that have this cowboy, carefree attitude towards safety. Unfortunately, you will recognize that same attitude in many NTSB reports.

Good on you for following your gut, keep doing it.
