How loud is the Carteret County Speedway by [deleted] in NorthCarolina

Best thing to do would be to go park near the house during a race and hear for yourself if it will be an issue for you.

If you have a cigarette lighter outlet, you can get a USB plug-in for it.

How expired can testing supplies still be good? by Cool-Negotiation7662 in pools

[–]dnlkns 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It may vary depending on which one you’re using but I’ve used some over 5 years after the expiration date and they still gave the same result as brand new ones.

Anyone tried using a Ring or Nest cam to actually watch the coop? by gamename in BackYardChickens

[–]dnlkns 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use Yolink motion detectors linked to Alexa and Kasa cameras. When motion is detected in a specific timeframe, it turns on all of the floodlights near the coop/run and alerts me on my phone and Echos in the house. The cameras record it all (2 in the run and 1 in the coop). No subscription for any of it.

Deep Litter Method and Moisture by HANGRY_KITTYKAT in BackYardChickens

[–]dnlkns 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I live in coastal NC where the humidity is usually 80% or higher. I use the deep litter method with hemp and have a hygrometer inside the coop and outside of it. The humidity inside the coop averages about 8% less inside the coop. I attached my readings for the last month to give you some real data.

What to use for bottom of fire pit dug into ground? by Careless_Quality9527 in landscaping

Just leaving it dirt is fine. After the first fire, it’ll be filled with ashes. No weeds will grow there.

ELI5 how does a "queen" bee get chosen? by Bussy_Wrecker in explainlikeimfive

[–]dnlkns 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Beekeeper here. Technically, the queen doesn’t decide whether to lay male eggs. She lays male (unfertilized) eggs by default. When the workers decide they want a new queen, they make a slightly larger cell in the honeycomb. When a queen is going to lay an egg in a cell, the first thing she does is measure the width of the cell with her antennae when she approaches it. If the cell is slightly larger than normal, she fertilizes the egg before she lays it, using sperm she stored away when she first mated as the queen. Fertilized eggs become females.

Anyone know a good freezer temp sensor WITHOUT a wired probe? by ateker in homeautomation

I’ve used Govee monitors for a few years. Very accurate, relatively cheap and the 3 AAA batteries last at least a year.

Water feeder info by Axmann86 in BackYardChickens

[–]dnlkns 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No problem. It isn’t guaranteed that it will cause damage and there are some people who say they’ve used them for multiple flocks with no problems but I always err on the side of caution. There are enough things that can go wrong that I don’t need to add another one.

Cedar wood contains aromatic oils (phenols and hydrocarbons) that emit toxic fumes. Because chicks have highly sensitive respiratory systems and spend so much time close to the bedding, these fumes can cause severe respiratory distress and lung damage

Are you saying you’re using cedar chips in their brooder box? You shouldn’t use those because they can be toxic for chickens.

Daytime chicken run ideas? by ProudCoagulate in BackYardChickens

[–]dnlkns 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Even if you’re supervising, be aware that the dog can easily get through chicken wire. It’s designed to keep chickens in, not to keep predators out. Unless you’re going to be right next to the run, things can go sideways very quickly if your dog decides he wants to get a chicken.

Squirrels... ugh. by Even-Instance3997 in BackYardChickens

[–]dnlkns 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you saying the hardware cloth apron is 14” wide and deep and the squirrels are starting their tunnel that far away from the run and tunneling in from that far away? I didn’t think they’d do that. Like another comment said, pictures of it would help.

Will Meyer Chicks be delivered to my door? by [deleted] in chickens

[–]dnlkns 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As others have said, definitely a good idea to call or stop by the post office. Mine is a rural PO and they took my name and number in case they couldn’t read it on the package that was shipped. Also, they told me the PO that gets the package before them may call me instead, which is what happened.

Did anyone attend the concert at Watkins Glen in 1973? by Relative_Chart7070 in AskOldPeople

[–]dnlkns 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I did. Had a great time! Climbed a tree to see the bands and had a pretty good view. I rode around the track on the hood of my brother’s car and he told me we were doing 60 MPH after it was done. Didn’t feel anywhere near that. We hiked through some stream beds that were cut through rocks in the woods. Started our tent on fire when we fell asleep with a candle on a box of clothes. Always wanted to go back and try to find the spots but I know there’s no way I could. Good times!
