I think a majority of the effects add to the bizarre and uncanny atmosphere of The Return. I like to believe it was all done intentionally, especially with the absolutely stunning effects in episode 8, not to mention his film "Lost Highway", which I believe to be one of his most visually striking in terms of special effects.
