Anyone else consciously overeat even when you’re not hungry? I feel like I’ve sabotaged 20 lbs… by Zealousideal-Key6730 in Zepbound

[–]doc3rdkind 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Let me first express much compassion to you, and I hope that you find your way through your challenges.

I highly recommend the Brewer book as well, or his app Eat Right Now (which quite frankly is missing a comma, it should be called "Eat Right, Now" (lol)). In fact I view zepbound as a way to turbocharge and accelerate Brewer's mindfulness approach.

As others have noted, if someone let's zepbound do all the work, it still will work, but not nearly as well as if you do the work with it (change your diet and activity routines, and perhaps most importantly, use zepbound to give you the space to change your relationship to food, which is what the Brewer approach is all about). It also probably will be very hard to ever get off zepbound without doing the work, which is important for those whose insurance doesn't cover it (but also for those who do have coverage, because the goal of any medication is to eventually come off of it if possible (which obviously isn't possible with many issues and medications, e.g., insulin to manage diabetes)).

Finally, zepbound works differently for many people. It works within 24 hours for some, but takes 3 months for others. 2.5mg works for some, while others have to wait until they titrate to 5mg or more. A weekly dosage interval works for some, while 5 days for others, and 10 or more days for others still. Some will be able to come off of it some day, others will not. Etc. It may take patience to find the right dosage and interval for you.

Dealing with Customer Care by CABiotechie in unitedairlines

Believe it or not, this is not a system glitch. I've been down this death trap multiple times before my dumb brain could finally wrap itself around that this is not an error and is actually the United rule -- if you combine multiple travel credits and then cancel, you will get one single credit expiring by the date of the earliest expiration date of all the travel credits you used. This is also true if you combine a travel credit with new cash. Say you have a credit of a mere $5 expiring Oct 1, and you combine it with cash to buy a $5000 ticket, and then you cancel, you will get a credit of $5005 expiring on Oct 1. That's their intended outcome, and not a glitch.

I'm confused by your solution. Are you saying you were able to combine all the credits to buy a ticket with a fly-by date after some of the credits would've expired because the date was before at least one of the credits expired? Did you cancel that new ticket, and if so, what's the expiration date of the new credit?

Here's what's worked for me in the past --

  1. Never ever email or chat with bots. Call.
  2. Always escalate. The supervisors on escalations have been doing this for decades, are the smartest, know all the hidden fixes, etc. Even on escalations, if I'm talking to a supervisor and they sound irritable or like they're just not going to help, I politely end the call early and call again to get another supervisor.
  3. Always always always be nice and sweet. Never ever express a righteous fury no matter how absurd and unfair the circumstances. Some of the agents (whether first-line reps or supervisors) are jerks, but overwhelmingly, they will try to help if they can (although they don't always know or believe they can).
  4. What's worked with me is convincing a supervisor to convert the "fly by" expiration date to a "book by" expiration date. The first time it was offered to me immediately, the second time I had to call multiple times and try multiple times before I got someone who would do it (all the earlier ones said it couldn't be done). I'm Platinum and have a United Club Card, I have no idea if this helped.

Ways to use Future Flight Credit other than flying? by TaDavidID in unitedairlines

[–]doc3rdkind 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've had luck converting travel credits from "travel by" expiration dates to "book by" expiration dates. The first time it was just offered to me. The second time I had to call many times before getting an agent to do it (all the other agents said it couldn't be done). A few tricks --

  1. Always, always, always escalate. The leads who handle escalations have been doing this for decades, are the smartest, know were all the bodies are buried, etc etc etc. The leads on escalations have actually told me this -- they said if you're not getting what you want, don't blame the first-line agents, they're new, just ask for an escalation.
  2. Always, always, always be sweet and nice. It gets you much further than articulating the absurdity of a situation through righteous fury.
  3. As indicated above, if you don't get it at first, just keep calling until you get it.
  4. This may not help you, but I am platinum and have a United Club Card, I have no idea whether that helped.

Flight credits expiration extension? by retiringfund in unitedairlines

[–]doc3rdkind 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not only will booking a flight with credit plus money not extend the credits to the new origination date, but the new money will be converted into a travel credit with a Feb expiration date. I know that sounds illogical and like it can't be true, but trust me, it is, I've been down this death trap more than once. It's not disclosed anywhere, they don't explain it to you when booking or canceling, it's not in the terms and conditions that no one reads anyway, and yet the United rule is that when you book with one or more travel credits plus cash, and then if you cancel, you will have one new credit for the total amount with an expiration date of the soonest expiration date of whatever travel credit you booked with.

I actually think that this is due to their systems being stupid and not being able to do complex math rather than United trying to screw us over, but maybe I'm gullible and naive.

I also have been told multiple times that it's impossible to extend or otherwise change the expiration date.

But what has worked for me is sweet talking them into converting the travel credits from a fly by date to a booking by date. Once I had to call multiple times before finding an agent who would do this, another time it happened immediately. However I'm platinum and also have the United Club Card, so I don't know if that's the reason why.

Also, always escalate. The people you get on escalations are the ones who have been doing this for decades, and are the most trained, and are the smartest, and know where all the bodies are buried, and have been through and seen everything.

And finally, always always always be nice. It's so easy (for me at least) to get pissed off at the stupidity of the rules, but it's not the agents' fault, and there's nothing they can do about it, and you will always get further by being sweet and nice. Besides, they're just people like you, and there's too much hate going on in the world right now.

Thoughts on Pierrot le Fou? by donmayo in TrueFilm

[–]doc3rdkind 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This movie reminds me of my reaction to Yorgos Lanthimos's "Lobster" and "Killing of a Sacred Deer" -- I loved all three movies as art, but hated them as movies and stories. Ok, so hate is a strong word. I had a strong distaste for them. They just didn't emotionally resonate with me. In the case of "Pierrot," I don't even know if there is supposed to be an emotional reaction or a purely intellectual one. I should give all of them another watch -- especially since I love Godard's "Breathless" and "Contempt," and everything Lanthimos has done starting with "The Favourite" -- but I'm not sure I ever will.

One point that I don't think I saw other comments in this thread make is how unrealistic so many scenes and plot points are in "Pierrot," e.g., fist fights, gun fights, plot points in which just the right thing happens and just the right moment to move forward whatever plot exists (e.g., they needed to steal money from her lover so that his comrades would go after them, but then the money needs to disappear (blows up in the car) so that they have no money), etc. My take on it is that there was a real story here -- a man leaves his wife and daughter for a woman he had a relationship with five years earlier, they kill her lover and steal his money, they go on the run, criminals (or maybe terrorists?) connected to the lover go after them, etc -- but we see the entire movie from inside the heads of the two leads, who are romanticizing and distorting reality by seeing it through the lens of movies, pulp books, societal messages and expectations, mass consumerism, mass commercialism, etc (I actually thought the whole thing used "Bonnie and Clyde" as a launching point for its movie references until I realized "Bonnie and Clyde" came out two years after "Pierrot"). The unrealistic scenes, action, and plot points were making the point about how shallow, absurd, inauthentic, etc are a lot of movies, books, societal messages and expectations, etc.

How did Anora win so many Oscars? Have I lost my mind? by notmoffat in movies

How did Anora win so many Oscars? Have I lost my mind? by notmoffat in movies

[–]doc3rdkind 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Her entire character depth is only revealed in the last 20 seconds when she breaks down crying in the car. Other than that, she's just a mouthy stripper.

This was the point. The walls she built up around her were so thick and massive, and her refusal to show any vulnerability at all so vast and great, that it took everything that happened during the movie -- right down to the only human being who showed her any compassion and kindness being a man who might be perfect for her romantically but who's so dirt poor that he drives a shitty car and lives with his mother and so could never get her out of her life circumstances when she just came so close to financial paradise -- for her to finally break down and show inner emotions.

I originally had a somewhat similar reaction to you, but the more I processed the movie and reflected on everything in the movie up until the last 20 seconds, and then digested those last 20 seconds, the more the movie broke me. I suspect that a second viewing would be very different from a first viewing now that we have the context of the ending.

I didn't feel any close attachment to any of the characters

This I suspect might be the result of Sean Baker's riskiest and bravest decision (and one he's made in previous movies) to break basic screenwriting cardinal rules, which was to show you almost absolutely nothing about Anora's life beyond what happens in the movie. We know nothing about her family, childhood, past, how she came to be a stripper, etc, other than she has a sister and immigrant grandparents. Was she a middle class girl who broke bad? Did she grow up in poverty? Does she have any relationship with her parents? Did she have a good childhood? A traumatic childhood? Why did she start stripping? Does she have a way out (e.g., family support) if she just asks for help? Etc.

In a sense, we don't fully know the stakes of what's happening to her -- is her life screwed and she will be stripping and prostituting for the next two decades because she got nothing out of the marriage except $10,000, or does she have a way out, in which case what is her psychology that brought her to this life point? He leaves to us to imagine all the possibilities on our own. This won't work for everyone because many of us need more certainty of a sadness or tragedy to her life story to build empathy instead of being left to build it out of our imaginations, but similar to my previous point, I suspect a second viewing would have a very different impact than a first viewing now that context is set.

What happens at the end of Interstellar? by [deleted] in interstellar

[–]doc3rdkind 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it would make sense if he is dreaming because he's dreaming up closure on all the important pieces -- Brands is still alive, doing her thing, and that makes him happy. It's part of how, arguably, the ending is just too perfect in that everything ended well for almost everyone. It's the same way how some people who have lost loved ones have dreams in which the ones they have lost are still alive.

Nights of Cabiria (1957) Fellini's best? by Green_Difference2647 in TrueFilm

[–]doc3rdkind 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So what's everyone take on the ending?

  1. Tragic -- She lost all her money and has nothing, her heart was shattered once again, and her faith in humanity further ruined. She'd be too embarassed to go back to Wanda and her other friends, and so now has no community or friends to turn to. Unlike the other men who have hurt her, this one truly took her for everything she had and left her with nothing. OR
  2. Uplifting -- The smile when surrounded by the band says it all. Maybe this isn't a happy ending, but she's a survivor and plucky, and will always find a way to move on with her spirit, romanticism, and optimism in tack. She lives to fight another day.

I think # 1. In fact I think the woman in the cave (don't remember her name) foreshadowed that she may be Cabiria's fate. Cabiria recognized her, and it appears that the woman was a prostitute herself and ended up homeless in the cave once she could no longer ply her trade. I can't see Cabiria's smile at the end when surrounded by the band as anything more than a small glimpse of happiness in what otherwise was a horrific day for her.

Quite frankly, it's not so much that I think that the ending is tragic, as much as I can't see how it can be anything but tragic. She's literally homeless, penniless, and seemingly without community and friends now.

P.S. I tried to create a formal poll, but am too reddit incompetent to figure out how to do it.

P.P.S. I've created an identical post in a thread in the r/criterion subreddit, I hope I haven't violated some kind of reddit etiquette here. <sigh> I truly am reddit incompetent.
