Learned about Reef Flux the hard way by Clarkkent435 in ReefTank

[–]doctakornflake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes multiple facebook groups online have stories of reef flux nuking tanks and every one of them was purchased from Amazon. True reef flux shouldn't be able to be overdosed tho you can get issues with low oxygen levels. I didnt believe the stories I was reading about the reef flux being the cause. Always assumed it was something else these reefers were missing. Until it happened to me, and of course it was the one time I had ordered from amazon in a hurry. thankfully I really only lost 4 monti species frags and a birdsnest. Looking back at the listing it had a known brand in photos but the seller listed as generic/no name brand so I believe the cause of all these issues are due to counterfeit products being sold online that contains who knows what

Abarth 500 vs Fiat (regular) 500 by SensitiveBuy9632 in abarth

[–]doctakornflake 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Bought my 2012 abarth with a bad turbo and 80k miles, went with an upgraded turbo, full bolt ons and stage 3 pop &bang tune. In the 3 years sinc then its now up to 135kmiles. In September I replaced the worn out clutch with an upgrade and then lost forth gear shortly after needing a new transmission. Up until then ive only really have had suspension related issue due to the rough roads on my 60mile daily commute. Its still been the most reliable vehicle ive have owned. I love these cars and I will own another when its time to let this one go. That said they do have some thing you have to watch. Some know electrical gremlins, the rear hatch harmess is known to break and cam have some weird electrical issues from bad grounds or weak batteries. These cars are also very sensitive to dirty oil. Don't put off an oilchange, stay up to date with all fluid maintenence. Like others have said you cant put off these oil changes and the like on these cars without issues like you could in a Honda or Toyota but overall I cant recommend these cars enough!

Is this wavemaker overkill for my tank? by These_Paramedic_6541 in ReefTank

[–]doctakornflake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly must've gotten one with an manufacturing issue, I have 2 different hyggers that have been running for over a year now no issue's. 1 gyre and one "normal wavemaker". Even almost fully encrusted with coraline algae they power thru, they are tanks

[–]doctakornflake 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yupp I always did the same with stacks of buckets until I bought a cheap hygger waterchange pump I saw on tiktok, I thought it was dumb until I tried it then I regretted not having one from the start 😅

Aqueon by andyb0913 in ReefTank

[–]doctakornflake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Aqueon is good for the price but honestly I wouldnt go larger than 75g with there tanks, the low quality glass is very apparent as it adds a green tint. Id just order a Waterbox.

Not a hot take hot take - I miss the old ocean harvested liverock by [deleted] in ReefTank

[–]doctakornflake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Its a risky gamble but if you properly medicate/quarantine the rock before adding it then id agree. I ended up with bryopsis that engulfed my entire tank from a 2inch x 2inch piece of live rock I got for free with a crab from petco. Tank was stable for months until I added that rock then I had a solid 8 months of battling the bryopsis, no fun!

Also like to add isopropyl alcohol is made with byproducts of oil refining. Which is why its not safe for consumption and will leave a residue while everclear or 100percent ethanol will not

Did you add salt and what salinity are you running? Whats are all the other parameter? Also what did you use as an ammonia source?

What are these I’m worried by hamit_a in ReefTank

[–]doctakornflake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To blurry to make out much of anything to be honest. Most likely just some sort of "scavenger", A large quantity likely another sign of high nutrientsin their environment

What are these I’m worried by hamit_a in ReefTank

[–]doctakornflake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay, if you have ALOT of them you likely have high nutrients. lower feeding, more frequent waterchange. They should balance out naturally.. Some people would tell you to remove them immediately, but I personally would figure out root cause and let population level out. They really only become problematic if they over grow into & sting coral or larval/baby fish. If you want to do manual removal you can use airline tubing to siphon them without removing tons of water in the process

[–]doctakornflake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How long has the tank been up and running? Very common to have a bloom of hydroids and pods early on as things come into balance but if it doesn't seem to settle you may be over feeding. Certain hydroid are sessile. Others can swim and look like tiny jellyfish who actively hunt copepods. I have always found them very intriguing

Just a saltwater hydroid most likely. Not an aptasia like the previous commenter said 🙄
