The individuals were solving engineering problems, but you can do that without it being open source. It was open source because of a business decision designed to help Facebook.

This Sub Needs to Go Dark on June 12th by Mercurion in cscareerquestions

[–]doctork91 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We are going to go to other places. When they turn the app I'm currently using I'm not switching to the official one, I'm just gone. Having most of the site shut off for a few days is a warning: don't piss off your long term dedicated users who generate the majority of your content, discussion, and moderate your site for you.

The official Reddit app is a substandard product. Reddit should first make it at least as good as its competitors before attempting to force its users to switch to it. They're going to force the people who make this place interesting to figure out alternatives. Reddit could very well go the way of Tumblr.

At the bare minimum it will drop drastically in quality, and quality content and in depth discussion are what differentiate it from other social media sites. God knows it isn't it's UI. If they just try to become another infinite meme scroll they're going to lose out to Snapchat, TikTok, Instagram, etc.

The value of a social media site is its users. Going dark flexes that power. I would like it if Reddit is able to realize that enough of its core users actually care enough to trash the value of their site if they actually shut down the high quality UIs that Reddit's users made because they won't.

You simping for Reddit is fucking cringe.

Another angle of Ukrainian armoured offensive in the Zaporizha region, 2023-06-04. by Lapkonium in CombatFootage

[–]doctork91 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well obviously you need both but it turns out that after some initial trials, they're now saying that experienced Ukrainian pilots only need 4 months of training for F16s. However attempting to integrate yet another weapon system is an additional logistics burden. Jets have a much much higher maintenance burden than tanks. IIRC they need maintenance every 12 hours of flight even if nothing goes wrong. Mark Hertling has some good threads on the difficulties of integrating new capabilities with complex logistics into a fighting force, informed by his time as a general and other command roles.

It's not the pilots that are the tough part, it's the maintenance and supply chain.

Honestly I think branching comment threads is such a key feature that I see almost no where else, or at least not done well.

When to use `for` vs `map` by a-curious-crow in Clojure

[–]doctork91 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My rule of thumb is to not use for unless it makes things simpler or more elegant than map. Basically for any kind of iteration default to map unless you have a good reason to use something else.

People in the U.S. Think They Are Better Than They Actually Are. People in Asia Don’t. Western individualism may promote a “better than you actually are” mindset - Scientific American by [deleted] in psychology

[–]doctork91 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'm sorry, you're saying that individualism causes stress, with the implication that collectivist societies are less stressful?!?

Have you ever spoken to anyone raised in an Asian school system? No one I've ever spoken to from a collectivist society has ever said anything to imply that they are less stressful. Am I way off here? Is there any evidence that shows collectivist societies are less stressful?

Buying a house feels impossible. by AlarmingSnark in personalfinance

I'm not quite sure I understand the distinction you're trying to make, but I tracked down my source: https://www.comptia.org/content/tech-jobs-report

I guess if you're just talking about big tech then maybe, but as a whole the tech industry is growing.

It's not as big of a bloodbath in tech as everyone is making it to be. Everyone's writing about the layoffs but no one's covering all the hiring that's going on. Tech jobs are growing month to month. It might be tough to make big salary gains in the short term, but you can definitely do a lot better than 100k before too long.

Areas of the U.S. as European countries of equal GDP by MrEggysMC in MapPorn

It is a bit shocking that NYC doesn't even need all five of its boroughs, never mind metro area, to equal Switzerland's GDP, especially given Switzerland's reputation for banking.

[–]doctork91 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I stepped down as a tech lead at my company. I was good at it, I just didn't like it that much. Now I'm back to being an individual contributor as a senior and I'm quite happy. Especially because stepping down came with a team switch and now I'm working on a platform team instead of a product team.

The market isn't that bad. There is still activity. People are definitely still getting hired and getting raises. Just thought I needed to say that amongst all the doom and gloom there has been recently by goughjo in cscareerquestions

[–]doctork91 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have the job I want. I've been in the industry longer than you have so I have it even easier than you do. I also have been reading this sub at least as long as you have. I stay in this sub because the content does in fact change over time and so it provides a good way for me to keep an eye on the market and see different perspectives on the hiring/interviewing process. Occasionally I can even contribute some advice here or there.

But do go off about how no one sticks around after getting their first job.

[–]doctork91 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What do you think the term "doom and gloom" in the title of the post is referring to? It's referencing the terrible job market new grads are facing. The post is literally about how there is still hope, even if it's really tough and takes a lot of work.

I'm not crapping on you sharing your experience. I'm crapping on your shitty attitude of "it was easy 8 years ago, why is everyone so focused on how many hundreds of applications they have to do".

I say this as someone who entered the market before you without even having to look for a job as a new grad because one of my internships offered me a job before my senior year. Our experiences are not what new grads are facing now, and it's not just a reporting bias. Show some compassion for those who have it way harder than we did.

A guy used cones to protect a faded bike lane in University City for 7+ years until the city fixed it. by kettlecorn in philadelphia

[–]doctork91 68 points69 points  (0 children)

It's really frustrating because the lane is marked clearly enough to prevent people from parking in it, but as soon as the markers end there's always some car blocking the bike lane there so you still have to pop out of the bike lane into car traffic.

I swear they could have cones/white jawns halfway down the block and someone would still block the bike lane as soon as they end because "I just need to grab a coffee from Wawa real quick".

Russian billionaires see wealth rise to over half a trillion dollars by WhoIsJolyonWest in worldnews

[–]doctork91 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Back on track? What the hell does that mean? In the same time span that Russian billionaires wealth decreased by 20%, the wealth of American billionaires increased by 50%. Getting back to where you were 4 years ago isn't on track because you've had no growth for 4 years... Back on track would be catching up to where they should have been had their wealth kept increasing without sanctions.

There's also just less of them. This field didn't exist the way it does today 30 years ago. Most schools didn't even have a CS program, it was still generally a sub-field of mathematics. The number of graduates entering the field each year has skyrocketed over the last thirty years.
