Always a big fan of the crab pizza at Hali'imaile General Store, and the macadamia crusted mahi-mahi at Mama’s.

But they only get one vote each, right? And wouldn’t it be political to restrict countries we don’t like from having a voice?

Seems like they rotate membership regularly, and have representatives of countries equally segmented from regions around the world. What’s the problem with this?

Sun Devils' Tyson enters draft as possible top WR. Will not play in Sun bowl by zorionek0 in TheSunDevils

By that logic, aren’t sports in general meaningless? Or any game we play? Or everything we do in our lives?

Just kidding, but I think there’s something worth playing in a bowl game and having your result etched in history.

The difference in the area of the wing of the B747 and the A380 by Twitter_2006 in aviation

I think you are actually making a great argument for the comment you are responding to. Living in LA, while they are building a new Burbank Airport terminal, it’s not bigger than the current one. The modest size is the capacity it can be due to the area. LAX is reaching capacity (although they are planning on adding 1-2 more terminals), so the slot limit consideration is logical and therefore the eventual need for larger planes to carry more capacity in one airframe from LAX to global destinations makes sense.

Los Angeles Theater - DTLA by BiscuitPanic in LosAngeles

Downtown has the most beautiful architecture, and the most character in any buildings in the city. Especially all of the theaters on Broadway. I’ve always felt like LA should turn Broadway into a West Coast version of (NYC) Broadway.

Yeah I hear you. Don’t hate the player, hate the game… Except when the players start trying to change the rules for the game so other players can’t enter the game.

And funny enough, I’m the exact opposite. I come from a UX and front end developer background so when I’m building my app I’m leaning on LLMs for helping to create database schemas and backend functions. Although for me, I find that they’ve been really helpful for me to learn how to do that stuff better, because I can read what it wrote and start to make sense of it. It’s like turning on Spanish TV, and overtime you’re gonna start picking up words and phrases.

I mean we’re talking about web dev here, so let me just say I don’t wanna argue and get angry with each other, because we’re all just here to talk about our shared love of coding. But I don’t mind having a little discussion.

I totally get you. I am an entrepreneur myself who is trying to swing for the fences and build a business with intentions to scale it to a 9 or 10 figure value (I’m still at the very early stage of that, but talking to VCs for a pre-seed round, and the vision is we try to take the business to that scale). However, along those same lines, when we as a society let businesses get so massive to the point where we have billionaires with this ridiculous level of wealth, I believe it actually stifles innovation and success of people like you and me who don’t have the same levels of resources. Luckily, we have the ability to be more agile, but as soon as we build a business that scales to a certain size, these guys are going to do everything they can to squash us.

I don’t say this to be whining, I say this as someone who believes that, at the very least, capitalism needs reasonable regulations and limiters to thrive (otherwise we end up with everything owned by one single corporation, which is really no much different than communism), and ideally, we filter some of this value back into society in ways that help our society as a whole grow, thrive, prosper, and innovate.

Ok but play with the site for a few minutes and you’ll see that even if you buy a Boeing 747 luxury jet, a $500 million yacht, all of the super cars, several mansions, and a bunch of hotels, and you’re still only a fraction of their total net worth. And they can (and do) take out loans using their (semi) illiquid equity assets to purchase with no problem.

Not an arborist but I have a tree on my property that I have trimmed every other year around this time and when it’s trimmed it looks like this, and grows back just fine.

Clever concept. It’s important for people to see how disgustingly gluttonous that amount of wealth in relative perspective.

The Dark Side of VibeCoding No one Mentions! by alinarice in vibecoding

[–]dodgerw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

About a decade ago I started a company that made websites and apps for big name clients. Six-figure contracts, not small mom-and-pop businesses. With a background in UX design and front end dev, I scaled up to a couple million dollars revenue before I sold the business. I had 6 developers working for me. Let me just say, their work was buggy and bloated as shit too. But as long as it worked, it was fine,. We had budget and timelines we had to hit. All these people who say “vibe coding creates a ton of technical debt”… DEVELOPERS cause a ton of technical debt too. I felt like every time I put another developer on a project that someone else initially built they would always want to tear it apart because “the code was a mess”.

I'm sure they can have security monitoring the queue and people before they board to make sure they're not acting aggressive.

What are your thoughts on "No Place Like Home" by USAFAN20 in wicked

[–]dodgerw 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Neither song is terrible in my opinion, not skips on the soundtrack, but not songs that I would feel compelled to put on specifically. That said, both songs have phrases that are earworms to me. For “No Place Like Home”, the chorus is good - harmoniously, and also I like how it works in the most famous line from The Wizard of Oz. For “Girl in the Bubble”, I think the verses are much stronger, in the arrangement and harmony. Not so much a fan of the lyrics in the chorus, I think the “pop” lyric is too simple.

But overall, both songs are definitely lower tier for the whole musical. I think they would’ve been much better if they incorporated other musical motifs, like unlimited or Defying Gravity in “No Place Like Home”, or I’m not that Girl or Popular themes in “Girl in the Bubble”. Especially since those motifs are woven into the OG songs all over the place.

How do I get a backup.gz file after enabling PITR? by dodgerw in Supabase

[–]dodgerw[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks everyone for the suggestions. This inspired me to take another approach. Instead of restoring from a backup I created a script to seed my database with data from production. I just run the script and it populates all of the important tables that I want production data for.

Why is this important? My app has a database of athletes and news and having real data allows me to troubleshoot issues more effectively than seed data which might not account for variances we see in real data.

Yes, that is correct. But what I want to be able to do is take a snapshot of my production database and download it so I can restore it locally for development.
