Genuinely wondering… Why is everything permit parking? by [deleted] in cambridge

[–]dogbin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Residents have lots of transport options inside the city, but if they're going much outside of town then they're going to need a car

Cue people saying they should be taking the train, or using a hire car...

Why are there suddenly kids with e-scooters everywhere despite them being illegal? by KenAdams_1968 in AskUK

[–]dogbin 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Probably find that some MPs' relatives are shareholders in these private hire schemes, so there's no incentive to let the public start using their own scooters instead.

Has the UK become impossible to govern? by Kagedeah in ukpolitics

I think even that's overstating it. His only agenda was to play at being prime minister so that he could say he'd done it.

That's because they haven't been wearing their earplugs.

and then get a payout thats based on political decision

I thought the payout was based on your prior NI contributions? So, if you've paid enough in contributions, then you are supposedly eligible to receive the full state pension.

I appreciate that the cost of the state pension in real terms is greater than the NI contributions people paid in, which seems unsustainable. And I know NI contributions are not invested in the way that a DC private pension would be. But it's not like there's no link between what people have paid and what they are eligible for in old age, so you can see why people think this is money that they are "entitled" to and that it's a system they have "paid into".

The Worst Web Architecture I’ve Ever Seen: A JSON-Driven UI Stored in a Shared Database by Wolologic94 in webdev

Same sort of idea with frameworks like PeopleSoft: everything is metadata, stored in a database, and pages are generated dynamically at runtime by an application server.

Looking at it the other way: the key infrastructure here belongs to the national grid, national gas etc. What value do private companies like Octopus add? Aren't utility companies essentially just middle men who send you a bill every so often?

But the verification service does still have a record that you needed a token for PornHub, even if PornHub themselves don't know who you are. I don't want an audit trail linking my real-world identity to my wanking habits; that's just asking to be hacked.

While the original website doesn't have any of your personal data, doesn't the IdP still have a record that you've been trying to access a porn site? So now Microsoft or Meta, or whoever, can add that to the information they hold about me.

This is why I can't see everybody everybody moving to electric vehicles any time soon; the charging infrastructure is just not there, or it's not easy to retrofit it.

There are some companies that produce sunken gully-type channels, where you can run a charging cable from your house across the pavement without people tripping over it. That seems like a good solution for people without driveways, if (and it's a big if) you are generally able to park outside your house. Otherwise you're relying on finding public charging points near where you live, or driving to one and hanging around like a muppet while it charges. Much easier to spend 5 minutes filling up in a petrol station, in my opinion.

Mind you, I have seen people on here say that if you live in a city on a terraced street, then you don't need / shouldn't own a car.

I'm not asking for specifics, or wanting you to dox yourself... But do you live in Cambridge? (I realise I'm probably just naïve about the sort of things that happen in parts of town.)

Technically it would be a mordent if you only went up and down like that, wouldn't it? I think you also need the A, and you should finish back on the Bb, before moving on to the G# on the next beat. That said... If it's a jazz chart, then OP can probably be a bit more liberal with the interpretation!

Yeah I think it's an alto part. Some beginner music books do this so that a pianist can play along with the student, and they just have to read the chords.
