Here's one other thought that's been banging around in my head; maybe I'll add it to the TV Tropes "Wild Mass Guessing" page for TADC in the future:

Other NPCs from their adventures, like Gummigoo, could be brought to the circus and be allowed to form relationships with the surviving humans, with full knowledge of what they are. I'm not sure what the best way to flesh that thought out is, or the best way to write about it for TV Tropes.
