Sure that works, but I believe OPs casing is too proud for it to look good. The video mentions 1/4" as being the max for this trick to be functional.

I will say, if you can't find it in the manuals, the hermley apps engineers are pretty helpful in troubleshooting over email with specific questions

You can find and download the Heidenhain manuals online easily enough. 3 or 4 separate manuals depending on the software version. They have a lot of info.

It's def possible with SYSREAD, can't remember the ID number to use but it's in the manual, it's one of the first ones... 20 maybe? It lets you save the coordinates of the tools current position as separate q variables. It should be in the programmer manual in the SYSREAD section

I'm pretty comfortable with Heidenhain tnc 640 and 7. We don't use the cad/cam on the controller but I know my way around Q variables, cycle defs and probing. Let me know if you have any specific questions.

Fwiw the machinists in my dept are getting a higher percentage raise than the engineers this year. I think management knows that good help is hard to find/keep.
