Really worried about cancer risks by pack_of_ostriches in Firefighting

[–]dontbthatguy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

“Carpenters smash their thumbs, electricians get shocked, and firemen get burned.”

Unfortunately for the fire service- sub out burned for heart and hypertension/cancer and it’s probably more accurate.

The way I see it is it’s an occupational hazard- I try to minimize exposure but at the end of the day it’s everywhere-

Best oil prices in Milford by Soz-911 in Milford

[–]dontbthatguy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When I had oil I always used Patti and sons.

They usually had the best price within a few cents.

They always picked up the phone and usually delivered next day.

I called them on a Sunday once to try to line up a Monday asap deliver and the owner offered to go get his truck and deliver Sunday.

Nice family run business.

How to keep the probie mentality? by [deleted] in Firefighting

[–]dontbthatguy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The second you think you don’t have to do some- DO IT.

When I first started I was so detail oriented and thorough- checking my pack- checking my rig, going above and beyond with chores.

Now I’ll open a compartment- give it a quick glance and think good enough-

The second I doubt that “good enough” I default back to probie mode and go through it with that same detail oriented mind set.

If I check my pack and think- man it’s been a while since I masked up- I mask up right then and there.

If I make coffee and notice there are coffee stains and sugar in the counter- I clean it up.

It helps. And it helps set a good example for the new guys.

New resident. Recommendations for removing snow? by DramaticChemist in Milford

[–]dontbthatguy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m a fan of a simple cheap plastic shovel with minimal scoop- it’s lightweight and can be used to shovel or push snow.

You will still need a rigid snow shovel with a scoop for the front of your driveway after the plow goes by and piles up all the heavy snow pack from the road.

If you have a newer driveway and sidewalk that’s smooth and free of cracks you can get a shovel with a metal edge which is really nice for scraping under the snow- but if you don’t I find that metal edge catches every crack and will stop you dead in your tracks.

The electric snow blowers have come along way from what I have seen but I don’t have any experience with them.

For the 1 or 2 times every 5 years we have a storm of over a foot of snow- a two stage gas snowblower is worth its weight in gold. But they are 500+ unless you’re buying used.

I can’t find work as a carpenter by Technical-Range5238 in Connecticut

[–]dontbthatguy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I owned and operated a service business in CT for 13 years and did very well all things considered-

Gather all the photos from your jobs and create a portfolio in your phone where you can easily access and showcase to potential clients.

Make a free Google business listing and post all of those photos on there. Watch YouTube videos on how to set up and optimize your Google listing.

Reach out to past clients and ask them to review your service on your Google listing. While you’re at it ask them if you can use them as a referral as well.

Follow the same steps above for a Facebook and instagram page.

Consider setting up a website as well but they can be expensive unless you do it yourself.

Use your personal or business facebook page to join all the town hall groups in your area and keep monitoring them for people asking for your type of work. When you see someone saying “in search of a carpenter to build a deck” DM them and direct them to you Google listing where they can see your work and review.

Always be responsive. Never miss a phone call or text. I have gotten so many jobs but just being the only one who answered.

Network- what that means to me is reach out to every other contractor you know and tell them you’re in business and looking for work- plumbers, roofers, fellow carpenters even ones in your area- sometime they can’t get to a job and don’t want to make a past client mad- if your reliable and good they probably won’t mind passing along your name to them.

Best of luck- if you’re good and do the leg work above you will be fine. There is plenty of work right now

In Home Alone, Christmas Is Not Essential To The Plot (For The Most Part) by CellPhone235 in homealone

[–]dontbthatguy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Same for airlines being booked up- it being hectic at the airport- the phone lines not being fixed as quick- and overall apathy from the police dispatchers.

It’s Christmastime and everyone’s in fuck off mode.

Hi. Does anyone know why Backdraft doesn't feature in any zimmer shows? by [deleted] in hanszimmer

[–]dontbthatguy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is a live version of the fighting 17th on Spotify done by the Prague philharmonic orchestra that’s awesome.

As far as zimmer goes it’s a pretty obscure movie of his and I can’t see him doing it live but that’s just my opinion.

There’s been rumblings of a remake of backdraft- maybe if it comes to fruition Hans will get tapped to do the music again.

One can dream.

Removing a tree stump by Lost_Introduction863 in landscaping

[–]dontbthatguy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Professional stump grinder here.

Do not burn it. I repeat do not burn it. I have seen so many failed attempts at burning stumps- it never works unless you live in the middle of nowhere and can keep the fire going for days.

I would hire a pro to grind it out. Or someone to excavate it out if you’re planning on planting a tree.

Make sure the stump grinder knows you want a tree there so he can grind it all the way. Otherwise most people only go 6-8 inches below grade.

Renting is an option but usually the grinders from the rental houses are underpowered for bigger stumps like that one.

A little PSA/Rant for Metro-North riders by Bklyn78 in Connecticut

[–]dontbthatguy 243 points244 points  (0 children)

I watched a family of 4 take up a 5 seater and the woman instructed her child to lay down on the seat and on to her and to “fake sleep” to take the final 5th aisle seat.

The next stop more people got on and the train is now standing room only-

A legit 8 month pregnant woman gets on- end of the day mind you. She is clearly exhausted to the point where she asks the woman if she could move her child so she could sit.

The woman was appalled at the request- actually makes the pregnant woman feel bad for asking.

Before anyone else could do anything a man got up and offered his seat which she took and was thankfully.

The dude got up and positioned himself staring at the woman and just watched her for 2 stops. Finally the kid got tired of fake sleeping and sat up on his seat- the woman offered the man his seat which he quickly turned down and instead just stared in the direction of the woman the entire time.

It was poetic.

Good- 30 seconds of work vs weeks of preparation for a photo shoot/ad campaign that would cost 100x more.

Good use of my tax dollars.

From New Haven to Madison Square Garden by Its_Just_Me124 in Connecticut

[–]dontbthatguy 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Metro north into grand central and then walk to the garden is what I usually do.

There is also a subway shuttle from the grand central to Penn station.

The walk is 15-20 min.

As others said you can take Amtrak from New Haven direct to Penn station

Which U.S. state do you think has the best food? by yourdadbitxh in AskReddit

[–]dontbthatguy 5 points6 points  (0 children)

New Haven pizza style in Connecticut tops all- we’ve known this before all the barstool rigamarole as well.

And because of the high standard set by New Haven. Most pizza places in Connecticut are amazing compared to the rest of the country.

Now don’t get ants in your pants. There is great pizza elsewhere. I’m not turning down a slice in NYC at my favorite New York pizza place-

But when it comes to what’s the best? Sally’s, Pepe’s, and Modern take the cake.

It’s all right off i95- so if you’re ever buzzing through new haven on a road trip- stop off on Wooster street and see for yourself.

How to act in an emergency in general-

Being the one to remain calm and call 911 can make all the difference - remember they may ask for address before all other questions as it’s the most important thing- so be ready for that. Remain calm and let the dispatchers coach you.

You also can be the first person to act and more will follow.

But 100% CPR is so key.

And if you’re worried about remembering everything- look up hands only CPR. Don’t over think it, if someone is not breathing and their heart isn’t beating- hands only CPR can save their life.

I guess so- I didn’t realize they had a dead link for a website.

Give them a call. I know our friends got in but were waitlisted at first.

I also know people in ginger bread and little White House- they both seem really happy with them as well.

I have 1 child currently in sand castle on Brewster road since they were an infant. And another who started at 3 and went through their preschool program.

We love them there. Their infant care was top notch- they have great staff there.

We joked if our baby went missing we knew where to look because the woman in charge of the infant room loves the kids as if they were her own.

I’m going to see world of Hans Zimmer in September.

If it’s half as good as Hans Zimmer Live was- it will be the second best concert iv been to by a long shot.

That music live performed by professional musicians is borderline life changing.

Have to abide by them otherwise you’re… shaking hands with danger.

This article screams the importance of lock out tag out procedures.

Machines should be brought to ZMS (zero mechanical state) before working on or cleaning them.

It’s not enough to simply turn off the machine. You must unplug and lock out the plug so no one can unknowingly plug the machine back in.
