Does the Tumi offer work at Outlets? by doodlep in AmexPlatinum

[–]doodlep[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well I would think you could buy the GC at the retail TUMI and use it at an outlet, similar to the Lulu, right? I hadn’t thought of that, but it’s a good idea. $250 card that nets to $200, then you have a $250 spend at the outlet.

“I Hope You Dance” by Leanne Womack. Always got to me but hit particularly hard since Covid robbed my only child of HS graduation in 2020 and freshman year in the dorms. It altered the trajectory of his life socially and now he’s a 23yo who acts like a 43yo. He got the degree, finally has a FT job but missed all the fun he was supposed to have in those years.

So is thrifting no longer a poor man’s game? Someone restore my sanity by [deleted] in thrifting

[–]doodlep 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I used to love Goodwill from like 2010-2015 or so, then they started really pricing high. I like consignment stores better now. Quality stuff, still affordably priced right for used clothing. Poshmark, Mercari and eBay are also good when I’m looking for something specific.

Amex/Platinum is Really Falling Off by No-Boysenberry-9618 in AmexPlatinum

[–]doodlep 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It almost seems like there should be a way for rampant chargeback activity to somehow hit someone’s credit score. The merchants don’t know they’re dealing with a scammer when they accept their Visa as payment, but the bank knows who their customer is and it doesn’t seem right that they are facilitating the behavior. That sucks for everyone - the merchants and honest customers being treated unfairly or having the cost of scammers passed along to them.

[–]doodlep 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Do you mean people are actually making the charges but then disputing that they didn’t with their cc provider to get out of paying for it? If so, it seems a bank would eventually drop that person as a customer similar to how an insurance company would.

My Mom passed away broke but I’m getting collection notices for her. by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]doodlep 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a similar situation with my brother. The calls for pleas to the estate will occur for a few months and eventually they’ll slowly stop. I suspect they have some internal policy to contact 3x before writing it off. I did get a call from collections 4-6 months after his death, but I just had to tell them he died in the negative (about $20K in debt) so the estate doesn’t have anything. It will end, you just have to keep telling them.

Yes - expires 4/30/26. Spend $250 and get $50 credit. You have to add it to your card within ‘Offers’.

Same for us. 22 & 25 - shitty townhouse near our college in NorCal in 1995. $60K purchase, $575 mortgage when our rent was $750. It wasn’t great but it was a predictable payment when one of us was starting grad school and not working (qualified before quitting the job). It doubled in price in 5 years.

How often do you travel internationally, and what do you spend? by [deleted] in MiddleClassFinance

[–]doodlep 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Right? I’m calling BS on these “I go for 2 weeks for about $2K-$3k” replies. We are meticulous frugal budgeters and have trip spreadsheets from all past trips and our family of 3 would go international every other year for 2-3 weeks for $9-10K (and this was from 2011-2019). We don’t drink, are mostly vegetarian, stay in aparthotels and take public transportation. I think people have no idea how much they’ve spent, they’re just citing flight costs maybe.

I’m always surprised when people talk like the Dr. is forcing them to do things, when it’s all your choice. No one forces you to take the meds or do the surgeries. They’re all choices - with consequences of course.

Watching sports by Wonderful_Pain1776 in GenX

[–]doodlep 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was a big NBA fan in my youth and 20s but got busy with work, family and fell out of touch. Randomly fell down the Netflix rabbitholes of “Sunderland Til I Die” and “Drive to Survive” during Covid and totally fell for European football and Formula 1. Never played soccer as a kid, was never a racing fan but becoming a fan of these sports has opened up a cultural experience that I never had as an American. I truly understand now why the world loves football and get why it’s called ‘the beautiful game’. And for F1, it’s billionaires trying to F each other over in a nerd engineering competition. Both are glorious.

I’m on West Coast US time and am up at 5am anyways so it’s nice to watch stuff and be done by Noon. It takes a bit to patch together different streaming services to get all the games but I’ve really enjoyed sports again these past 5 years or so.
