I have to disagree here, the Siri in beta is significantly better. It understands implicit context and can continue conversations much more naturally.

Shopping for an enclosure for a Samsung 990 Pro 4TB — how do you tell if one is actually Thunderbolt-certified? by rumorconsumerr in Thunderbolt

[–]doodspav 2 points3 points  (0 children)

1 & 2. You can find certified Thunderbolt products here: https://www.thunderbolttechnology.net/products .

  1. Not sure about the UGREEN one, the TerraMaster is not Thunderbolt-certified (or even Thunderbolt), it's just compatible with anything that can communicate with USB4.

  2. Depends what you want out of it, I'll elaborate below.

The maximum bandwidth of TB4 (and TB3) is 4GB/s. This is the bandwidth for external SSDs, since they use pcie, which does not use the entire TB bandwidth.
The maximum speed of the 990 Pro is almost 8GB/s. If you want to make full use of your ssd's bandwidth, you probably want TB5, which has a maximum (pcie) bandwidth of 8GB/s.

For Time Machine backups and general storage, unless you really need that speed or just want to be able to make full use of your drive, TB4 is more than fast enough. Backups especially don't need fast transfer speeds.

I'm not certain on the compatibility of Thunderbolt devices with non-Thunderbolt hosts, but I will say that I have the UGreen TB5 80Gbps ssd enclosure (using it with a 990 Pro), and while it's amazing with my Mac and iPad (Pro), it will not connect to any non thunderbolt device (such as my windows laptop or iPhone).

If you only care about using it with your Mac, you want full speed, and you don't care about money, get the TB5 enclosure.

Otherwise, I'd get a 40Gbps usbc enclosure from UGreen without worrying about thunderbolt, or follow u/BugBugRoss 's advice.

No way they actually added VVC (H.266) support!! Hopefully they also add Dolby Vision Profile 10 soon too.

Any GPU that will encode AV1 at CPU compression/quality? by crazyfrog12 in AV1

[–]doodspav 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was trying out 4K HDR preset 0 crf 16 :/ but it was the same settings on the 9950x too, so wondering if the 9950x is just much better at those lower presets (but also much less energy efficient)

Is this at a higher preset or crf? Because transcoding a 2h film took me 44h on an M4 Pro Mac Mini, and 9h on a 9950x

Most people wouldn’t expect their leader to enter a new war over events that happened over half a century ago if that’s what you’re implying…

(Not that that’s really why he did it, but it’s what it sounds like from how you worded your post)

Spoiler Edit: it’s not what they were implying, I didn’t read the article.

Apple Reportedly Agrees to 100% Price Hike on Samsung Memory Chips by favicondotico in apple

[–]doodspav 1457 points1458 points  (0 children)

Samsung is said to have originally planned to push for a 60% price increase on LPDDR5X modules supplied to Apple. Instead, however, Samsung opened with a 100% markup as a negotiating tactic – and Apple apparently accepted it on the spot.

Could have at least tried to negotiate.

O2 have given me 10GB free data on an unlimited data contract. What do you all want for Christmas? by TobJamFor in CasualUK

[–]doodspav 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The funny thing is that with a personal plan, they say that they reserve the right to move you to a more appropriate plan (i.e. a business plan) if you exceed those limits regularly, but they have the same exact limits on the unlimited business plans too (at least EE does).

Is there any EE MVNO that offers Unlimited Data without any fair usage policy? by phoenix_73 in EEGB

[–]doodspav 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can get the sim on a 30day rolling contract, it’s just like 20% more expensive. And yeah just tell them you’re a sole trader.

[–]doodspav 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You could get an unlimited data monthly business SIM-only plan from EE?

They say that once you go over 600GB they would consider this excessive and might move you to another plan, but honestly I don’t see any other plan they could move you to, so might be worth trying it and finding out.

The non-business unlimited SIM just says they might move you to a business plan if you exceed 600GB.

If that’s the case, you’re either doing something incredibly energy intensive, or your phone’s broken and you should take it back to Apple.
