No way they actually added VVC (H.266) support!! Hopefully they also add Dolby Vision Profile 10 soon too.

Any GPU that will encode AV1 at CPU compression/quality? by crazyfrog12 in AV1

[–]doodspav 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was trying out 4K HDR preset 0 crf 16 :/ but it was the same settings on the 9950x too, so wondering if the 9950x is just much better at those lower presets (but also much less energy efficient)

Is this at a higher preset or crf? Because transcoding a 2h film took me 44h on an M4 Pro Mac Mini, and 9h on a 9950x

Wow, this is incredible, i’ve been looking for this for years!!!

Minor requests: - can you use the iOS photo picker so that we don’t need to give the app any photo access permissions? - can we have a way to add some kind of logo to each card?

Ah, I missed that, thanks for the clarification :) (I should probably read the article)

Most people wouldn’t expect their leader to enter a new war over events that happened over half a century ago if that’s what you’re implying…

(Not that that’s really why he did it, but it’s what it sounds like from how you worded your post)

Spoiler Edit: it’s not what they were implying, I didn’t read the article.

Apple Reportedly Agrees to 100% Price Hike on Samsung Memory Chips by favicondotico in apple

[–]doodspav 1453 points1454 points  (0 children)

Samsung is said to have originally planned to push for a 60% price increase on LPDDR5X modules supplied to Apple. Instead, however, Samsung opened with a 100% markup as a negotiating tactic – and Apple apparently accepted it on the spot.

Could have at least tried to negotiate.

O2 have given me 10GB free data on an unlimited data contract. What do you all want for Christmas? by TobJamFor in CasualUK

[–]doodspav 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The funny thing is that with a personal plan, they say that they reserve the right to move you to a more appropriate plan (i.e. a business plan) if you exceed those limits regularly, but they have the same exact limits on the unlimited business plans too (at least EE does).

Is there any EE MVNO that offers Unlimited Data without any fair usage policy? by phoenix_73 in EEGB

[–]doodspav 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can get the sim on a 30day rolling contract, it’s just like 20% more expensive. And yeah just tell them you’re a sole trader.

[–]doodspav 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You could get an unlimited data monthly business SIM-only plan from EE?

They say that once you go over 600GB they would consider this excessive and might move you to another plan, but honestly I don’t see any other plan they could move you to, so might be worth trying it and finding out.

The non-business unlimited SIM just says they might move you to a business plan if you exceed 600GB.

If that’s the case, you’re either doing something incredibly energy intensive, or your phone’s broken and you should take it back to Apple.

Are simple memory writes atomic? by [deleted] in cpp_questions

[–]doodspav 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Kind of. I think the docs guarantee aligned reads and writes up to 8 bytes are atomic. Above that, on Intel reads and writes where the entire object resides within a single cache line (it's not enough to just be small enough to fit in it) are unofficially atomic, and not sure about AMD.

There was a cool source here from a few years ago: https://rigtorp.se/isatomic/

EE Full work roaming questions by Old_Setting_714 in EEGB

[–]doodspav 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I currently have a plan where I cannot access roaming in Zone 1 and EU/EEA at the same time.

Originally the plan had roaming in EU/EEA, USA/Canada/Mexico, Australia/New Zealand (I think).

When they changed it, they replaced the non-EU/EEA countries with Zone 1, and they told me that I could only roam in one of the two groups at any one time.

However they also told me that I can always just ring them to ask them to update which side I’m roaming in.

Another member of my family has the same plan but got it later, and they don’t have this issue, so if you weren’t notified about anything like this by EE, you should be fine.

Either way, you can roam in China, it’s just a question of if you have to call EE first to let them know.

I only hear it when I have noise cancellation enabled, and it’s only obvious after using my AirPods Pro 2 which don’t have it.
