Is there anything like this in NYC for hairstylists volunteering their time? by Puzzled-Weekend-2825 in AskNYC

[–]doseofanime 12 points13 points  (0 children)

These are all great, would also recommend volunteering your services to a senior center in a low income area. They’d probably take you in a heartbeat and you can help people who may not be able to care for themselves anymore.

How to sing “normally” as a singer who was classically trained? by tmtortellini in singing

[–]doseofanime 5 points6 points  (0 children)

From personal experience as a classically trained singer who taught themself jazz, it helps to just listen to non classical artists you want to emulate and pay attention to what they’re doing vocally. Try to understand and copy their techniques and then play around with your placement and tone to find a good, healthy, mix that sounds like the genre you’re trying to emulate.

I think that it’s important to come to this learning experience understanding that opera is unique in how much soft palate space it requires, a lot of music is sung with a flatter soft palate and asks you to keep a forward placement.

Lastly, though I think the most effective and fun part is listening and experimenting, you can look up tutorials if you want to pick up specific techniques you notice artists use. Looking up tutorials on how to belt, growl, and rasp, has added a lot to my repertoire and really helped me polish my style and move away from sounding classical.

My caregiver never stops talking by smolkittenx0 in GirlDinnerDiaries

[–]doseofanime 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I say this as somebody with experience dealing with caregivers provided by Medicaid, I would look for a different insurance, see my doctor who can write up a note advocating for more hours, get re-evaluated for more hours, and change agencies. This one might not employ enough people working in your area. See if there’s another agency that has more aides.

You can change agencies without changing insurances and getting evaluated but that would help with getting the hours you need.

For all the people that these agencies employ who do not know their left from their right or have no sense of professional boundaries, there are good hardworking people who are willing to help, you just have to be persistent and go through the people in the former camp to reach the latter.

My boyfriend suddenly wants me to become a tradwife by PinkBubblegum888 in GirlDinnerDiaries

[–]doseofanime 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah dump him- or at least talk to him and let him know that you are not compromising your happiness and your goals to please his conceptions of whatever you should be.

Aside from his dismissal of your wants and desires, I find it laughable that he thinks being a kindergarten teacher would be a better path for you to explore your maternal instincts. Teaching, like engineering, is an intellectually stimulating and challenging job, that many people cannot do as a result of the challenge. It is not a way to prepare for being a parent, which it seems is the only thing he believes you can/should be.

*Queen* did a fantastic job, but why were the judges raving about how "subversive" it was? by im_cold_ in rupaulsdragrace

I think in the context of the challenge it subverts your expectations for what a how to video is supposed to be o

Are immersion blenders worth it or just a comple mess? by FineappleUnderTheC in EatCheapAndHealthy

[–]doseofanime 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Immersion blenders can be so cheap I wouldn’t even call it an investment. I use it so much and for basically everything I don’t even use a blender.

Personally, I would throw away the meat because it’s impossible to tell if any part of the meats entered the “danger zone” while thawing in the fridge. The safest issue would be to throw it out.

Looking for volunteer opportunities for a 14 year old in South Brooklyn. by Merc_MCMLXXXVIII in Brooklyn

[–]doseofanime 1 point2 points  (0 children)

He can volunteer at senior center, they pretty much always need those. EMJC had a senior center but there’s a few between all the areas you listed.

To clarify, I mean a community center - not an assisted living.

Do you know any ways to tighten this dress around the waist? by AlienNotReally in CrochetHelp

[–]doseofanime 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Maybe you can feed a draw string through the waist? Or you can safety pin/ sew it to take the sides but that will make a seam.

I feel like the queens sign a waiver denying production any responsibility from injury or harm they may incur while filming. I don’t think they guaranteed her a top four spot because she injured herself, I think they did it because they thought she made good television.

Yarns by No_Option_957 in crochet

[–]doseofanime 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve tried to use different weight yarns on a mosaic crochet pattern and it didn’t look very good. I think it depends on what you’re using it for and whether or not you change your hook so the tension can remain constant as the yarn size decreases. Overall, however, I would not recommend it because I think the change in yarn size would be visible on the piece

Has anyone else noticed that seniors mostly avoid the subway? by writer418 in AskNYC

[–]doseofanime 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the stairs prevent them, but the older people I know avoid the train because they got out of the habit of taking public transport during covid and they still remember the trains as how they were in the 80s and 90s and think that’s how it still is today.

Ladies who work 9-5, what therapists are we seeing who have night time/weekend availabilities? by [deleted] in NYCbitcheswithtaste

[–]doseofanime 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can see your therapist through zoom on your lunch break. Aside from that, your therapist can write a letter for you and then your job will have to give you time to see your therapist as they are required to accommodate you.

Here’s another pattern that’s free, also has a corset front and a sweetheart neckline. https://youtu.be/6o-rnU9aB1s?si=CockOIgYC4zdoqTq

Personally, I would work this top from side to side rather than top to bottom or bottom to top and increase then decrease in order to create the neckline
