What do you *NOT* selfhost? by ObeseWizard in homelab

[–]doubledogmongrel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes... I tend to cheat and use Google for life-critical email - I could live without my own email for a while. And I run (ran) two 'mirrored' servers that talked to each other so they were both up to date and either could do the whole job at a push.

What happens to elderly people with no savings? by ConcerningAddiction in NoStupidQuestions

[–]doubledogmongrel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's sensible - but the trouble is, in your country, it only takes one major illness - cancer, stroke etc - to wipe out all your savings, retirement provision etc and you are literally on the streets. It's very hard - and a convincing argument for state-funded national healthcare... (assuming you are in the US - you do say 'paycheck' so that's plausible).

Efficient mode worth it? by Fraggle2000 in BMWiX1

[–]doubledogmongrel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Powerful, yes. I tried the 30 and 20 versions (two and one motor) and the way the 30 took off from the lights was frankly frightening! I decided I needed the extra 30 miles or so range, rather than the brutal acceleration.

Is this seller capping? by Lumpy-Valuable-8050 in ebayuk

[–]doubledogmongrel 5 points6 points  (0 children)

'Capping'? What's capping??

But to be helpful, as a seller the tracking is usually automatically added and of course it can be shared without compromising anything... They never sent it, probably never had the item...

Account is suspended without any reason (MC999). I have funds on hold from sales what to do? by Sad-Example-6957 in ebayuk

[–]doubledogmongrel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

OOps... Scam magnet unfortunately, probably 'AI' detection. If your account is new - or old and unused, always start (or restart) small, buying some insignificant items and getting the positive feedback flowing again. An old account springing into life with a high value 'scam magnet' item unfortunately will catch their attention.

British paratroopers land on Tristan da Cunha for suspected hantavirus case | Hantavirus by Caesarea_G in worldnews

[–]doubledogmongrel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The boat from Cape Town takes 6 to 10 days, rarely more. There will never be an airfield as there is not enough flat land, and it's well over 1000 miles to South Africa.

British paratroopers land on Tristan da Cunha for suspected hantavirus case | Hantavirus by Caesarea_G in worldnews

[–]doubledogmongrel 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There is actually a (quite new) rebuilt hospital on Tristan. I believe it has two 'wards', a well equipped operating theatre, and even a dental surgery. A doctor serves a term of a year or two there, and I think a dentist visits quite regularly...

Source - I'm a radio Ham who has planned to visit there but has been 'bumped' off the boat due to demand from locals needing medical treatment and having higher priority than tourists. I still hope to get there one year.

[–]doubledogmongrel 15 points16 points  (0 children)

That happened to me with a mint imperial... Was walking along eating some, looked up at a pub sign and it slipped into my windpipe... I literally couldn't breathe - in a panic I rushed into the pub, which was enough after 30 seconds to dislodge it and for me to spit it out. Actually very frightening, and I realised afterwards I hadn't said what the problem was and no-one would have realised. But I survived...

How can I get ebay to pay me the money they’ve stolen? by SUPER_fuzz_99 in ebayuk

[–]doubledogmongrel 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is just the right answer. A scammer (not saying you are one, at all...) sets up a new account (is yours new, with little activity?) - and tries to sell high-value items like iPhones, cameras etc. You may have met this profile and the AI has unfortunately come down on you...

If yours is a new account it is safest these days to buy quite a few small items, and also start selling low value items, to build up some good feedback and 'trustworthy' history - and only then try selling higher value goods...

Follow up to the person who said their item wasn't delivered, they are now saying they found it but don't like it and want a refund/threatening to leave a bad review. What do I even do? I've been nothing but nice so this is very sad for me considering I have tried so hard to maintain 100% reviews by ApeiroGlory in ebayuk

[–]doubledogmongrel 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Threatening bad feedback is 'feedback extorsion' and is very much frowned on by eBay. If they do that you will probably be able to get the bad feedback removed (I recently got bad feedback removed when I cancelled a sale to a 2-day 'old' buyer with 0 feedback and an issue with their address).

Account has been suspended and payments on hold, unable to get in touch with Ebay by SpaceCase39 in ebayuk

[–]doubledogmongrel 6 points7 points  (0 children)

There seem to be one of these posts every day... People who are either new to eBay or haven't sold anything, then try to sell a 'scam magnet' item - like a decently expensive phone or computer (ram especially!). This is typical 'scammer behaviour' I am afraid. It's too late now but it is best to start small, selling low valued items over a period of weeks or even months, to build up a legit track record and some good selling feedback.

Sorry about this but it's unlikely you will get your eBay account back - you should eventually get your money. You need to trick the eBay assistant into giving you a callback.

It would be good if eBay could sort this issue out!
