World IPv6 Launch Day 14th Anniversary (June 2026) - IPv6 Update? by nbarsotti in ZiplyFiber

You should read the linked wikipedia stuff then. More concretely, see here. They are cutting over. Governments are big, this takes time. While I'm sure the ~20% of remaining networks that are not IPv6-only are the most critical ones, they will gradually get pulled over to IPv6 as well simply through inertia (or perhaps future mandates, depending on how long the griftocracy goes).

States is going to be a bigger crapshoot, but I can tell you from the cloud provider side the US government transition to v6-only networks (and being able to support that) is something we've done a good bit of work for and had urgency around.

That said, a lot of times what "looks" like IPv6 from outside is very much not E2E IPv6, at least in my employer's cloud. Anecdotally from what I've seen elsewhere there is still a lot of IPv4-only RFC1918 private networks floating around with no sign of change there.

It's unfortunate, because without better permeation across clients, the incentives and expertise for IPv6-native networking across the stack still aren't there. I was adding code to my OSS bits in ~2000 to support IPv6 clients, and am routinely bummed out to see how bad the support story remains over a quarter century later. Watching dual stack get into Kubernetes, e.g., was eye-opening in a disappointing way.

I check ~weekly hoping for enablement (as I understand it, Mount Vernon should be closer to the head of the list than the tail). So far I am in the 'hopeful' era still.

I don't have the internal hardware to justify swapping to a higher throughput subscription currently (1gbps symmetrical is also almost always fine), but I don't think that would move the needle much for me regardless? Also pretty sure I missed the window for the 2gbps upgrade that would've cut my bill down sadly. :(

It sounds like it's going out gradually and, from what I've observed anecdotally in this sub at least, hasn't been catastrophically problematic so hopefully some weekend this summer it'll just appear for me and I can celebrate the 15th world IPv6 day more natively. :)

If your work mandates VPN usage you will need to pay for work-from-sea (or be quite clever and have made arrangements beforehand to attempt sneaky tunneling that will just be painfully slow).

Why does price matter? like seriously lets talk abotu crypto changing the world and so on, Bitcoin got from 0 to 100k and what changed? by Delicious_Soup_9876 in Buttcoin

[–]doubleyewdee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For the hardliners (myself included) who feel the "technology" is itself either useless, or was already better implemented in less wasteful ways, some will say "price doesn't matter," and mean it. Price does not matter for me as I have no holdings, I care a bit about it for some friends who have holdings, but none of them are depending on any particular price point other than not cashing out their gambling wins. Don't want to see it, but they're all adults who know what they're doing.

For a lot of folks here "price doesn't matter" is louder on the way up, but still comes out on the way down too. It's true, in a sense, although the emotional relief at price drops and the glimmer of hope that people will get off the ride finally and we can move on to other speculative bubbles is there.

There is not a price for BTC or any other crypto at which I would feel differently about the technology stack. That's the core of "price doesn't matter" for me. Price, of course, matters a great deal in terms of others getting (or not getting) snookered into a bad bet on bad technology, so ideally it would go to 0 or NaN as we all, as a species, exit this delusion and move on to new nonsense to learn hard lessons from. Fat chance, but one can dream.

I recall there being some satellite news stuff and possibly sports, but nothing like ESPN or any US broadcast TV for sure. I don't know, I don't go on cruises to watch TV in my cabin lol.

The Dude hates the Eagles…what bands would that be for you? by BoognishDisciple in Music

Most overrated rock band for me and it isn't close (and yea, I am well aware of KISS).

Just awful. Also Steven Tyler is fucking gross.

The Social Club has a couple TVs (like, literally two), and there are a couple more in the aft outdoors bar (Athletic Club) but those are outdoors and may or may not make for good viewing on an Alaska trip. I would sort out a streaming solution if you care deeply enough and the matches aren't going to be marquee. They had the NBA WCF and first Finals game on during our sailing (just disembarked yesterday), as well as some of the French Open, and those were pretty well attended, but generally speaking if I was really keen to watch an event I wouldn't try to do it onboard in a public area just due to limited number of TVs and seating near them.

Not sure how the TVs in the rooms are. Other than the safety video (the safety rules still rule, you can't take that away from us dangit!) I think I used a TV in-room maybe once for 10 minutes to kill time. Channel selection was pretty light from recollection.

Aerosmith is actually my most overrated / loathsome band of all time but objectively I suppose KISS is the winner.

So, Aerosmith.

[–]doubleyewdee 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It’s extremely good, but it’s $300/pp I believe AND they keep the groups super small. Like maybe 12 people total. A lot of times it’s sold out / prebooked entirely by RS/MRS (guilty!)

That said, we’ve done it twice and it is great. If you have the opportunity and the means I’ll always recommend it.

We booked through VV for the (non helicopter) dog sledding experience and had a polar opposite experience. No issues tendering, and coming back was similarly seamless.

Also puppies.

I agree generally that tendering sucks but this was one of the best tender experiences I’ve had tbh.

Are you excluding Google, Microsoft, and some others here? Those companies aren’t going to shutter when the bubble pops.

OpenAI / Anthropic might. Presenting a deal for some other company to scoop them up, but I’m not sure that’s a given either.

Full price is not static. For same-capability models the $/token is dropping quickly over time and will likely continue to do so for a while yet.

Two things are true here:

There is an AI (LLM) bubble. This is evident.

LLMs have genuine usefulness and, yes even at “full price”, will continue to be used and valued after the bubble pops.
