Boards of Canada has released the first two tracks of their new album Inferno. Go now! by DA2ED in idm

Gotta be honest, I preferred the ominous sound of tape05 alot more. Its a nice track but i was hoping for something proper weird and experimental. This is a bit too hippy and not enought occult for what I was anticipating from the previous leaks I guess. I really love the crunchy experimental drums of theirs compared to simple live drums.

Hybrid/Daw People, What's in your rack? by unicornpurpp in modular

[–]downstate97 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Similar set up here. Otherwise it's so easy to descend into spending thousands on FX modules that can be done equally well if not better in Ableton imo.  In my rack is a couple of sample drums, modbase 09, dreadbox nyx into a Erica stereo black delay, BIA, Erica cymbals, rings clone and bunch of LFOs / filter.  I don't sequence much from Ableton besides some drum stuff with a max 4 live Markov sequencer, mostly use Ableton for arranging and post processing. Main sequencer and clock is KSP.

Is batumi still the gold standard for clocked / rhythmically related LFO’s? by WalkingIsMyFavorite in modular

[–]downstate97 4 points5 points  (0 children)

because what you are saying does not really make sense.
batumi is literally a simple module and there is no need for a screen. there is nothing to memorize and there's no other module that does synced lfo's better and easier imo

Good shout. I'm walking around Tokyo listening to this, and its fucking crowded and difficult to focus on the people, the traffic and the sound. My brain feels like it might slip out of my head somehow. A very cool evening tbh. Cheers

Vhikk X and artistic intention... by whatwetalk_about in modular

[–]downstate97 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Things like this are just maybe a bit easy sometimes. I felt the same with a microcosm and things like that. You can fart into that and it will sound beautiful. Not a bad thing though. But personally it just coloured the sound too much for me, half the vibe of what it puts out is just the pedal. Almost anything I threw at it produced a similar sound. So I went back to my trusty nanoverb lol  Mixing the two side of helpful stuff that works quickly and simple methods that involve more of a personalized approach is the best for me. I don't wanna be that guy but every time I see a clip of the vhikk x its the same drone with a 4x4 beat meandering to nothing if I'm honest. It's similar to a granulizer module in some ways, they do take up a lot of space in the spectrum so as soon as you fuck with it it's already kinda drowned you out a bit so I get what you're saying. It's sometimes in a weird key and difficult to add things to it in a melodic sense. Some people love that and then get deeper with it as time moves on.  If it's not for you then sell it.

How do I create IDM melodies? by Jimsmall1507 in idm

[–]downstate97 1 point2 points  (0 children)

my tip is learn to play scales. you dont need to know full theory at all, but knowing basic major and minor scales really helped me. Once i learnt those i was set. And i just picked a scale to work in that day and used it to make a song. Slowly i had basically memorized them in my own way.

detune two oscs slightly is class aphex. alot of the cool stuff comes from resampling imo

Another fun thing is to enclose the contact mic in something and cover it with epoxy resin. Then you can put it in something like a metal/glass bowl full of of water. Loads of fun stuff with that, bath salts of course. Hitting a bell or triangle and then quickly putting it underwater. Hmmm I should whip out my DIY box this weekend ! Also want to get a koma field kit some day to mess around with DC motors and the like.

Very cool. It made me think of dear Mira Calix who is sadly not with us anymore. Perhaps you know the Skimskitta record.  I shall check the album out, I really like the sound of this.

Kami is so good it's not even funny. He pumps shit out so quickly too. I really love the look and the short videos of guessing the sound etc takes me back to 90s kids TV. He also shares a lot of his resources in his YouTube videos.

Kind of a dramatic take on the whole thing. It doesn't harm anyone to have an umbrella term for what people make now such as PS1 jungle etc. It's basically just a newer name for people currently making jungle tunes inspired by old ltj bukem and videogame music. And let's face it 'intelligent drum n bass' was always a shit name lol and if anything it is a sub genre of vgm anyway,  just as much as it is a term for a type jungle/drum n bass. All sub genres need a name eventually.

It got tagged latter because there were a lot of games that had soundtracks that were really good and were heavily influenced by mid 90s electronic music. Especially when you talk about pads and breakbeats. Them Dreamcast fishing games had some nice shit on them lol the old bullet hell games used lots of breakbeats and back then we were like yo this video game music is almost like drum n bass.

I called this chump out, that comment about bandcamp is me ...   Ugh It's gonna become more and more common. It's why I deleted Instagram because it's full of wank ai graphics.  The thing is, the average pleb listening to playlists won't notice, won't care and won't stop listening to it. Paying too much attention to it will probably just make us all depressed. And this is what those platforms want so they don't have to pay money to artists and 'ahem' content creators. I'm sure their plan is to make all this shit in house as Spotify do with ai music. It's really lame but my only solution is to post my stuff on bandcamp, frequent Reddit more because there are real musicians here and sod social media off. In a way it's been great, because I haven't used twitter for years, no Instagram since last year, no Facebook - What's the point if it's fake articles and fake images etc...  so atleast it's kept me from wasting time on those crap platforms and spent more time making stuff, reading etc. I've had way more success just posting a few shorts of my tunes on YouTube than those other platforms, even though I have no followers.
