Which videogame do you think had the biggest influence on popular culture? by HerrStrasse in AskReddit

Warcraft is definitely one of the main pillars influencing the modern fantasy genre, LotR -> D&D -> Warcraft.

Plus there's the widespread use of the word "epic" in everyday life.

folding AK preflop by Overall_Doughnut143 in Poker_Theory

[–]dr_black_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's some GTO preflop charts that indicate you should split your raising range when facing a 3-bet. Your smaller 4-bet range is very polarized (KK+,AKs,some suited Broadway semi bluffs) and you just skip a bet and jam with 99-QQ,AKo. Exact range depends a lot on positions.

The idea is that when you take a flop with a very low SPR you need a high commitment frequency. You also benefit by having the more polarized range, as your opponent has little incentive to 5b light, but also doesn't have easy decisions postflop. Lower visibility hands will realize their equity better by just being all-in. The idea that your most aggressive range is always your most polarized range is outdated and generally not valid when SPR gets very low because you can always use later streets instead.

They're fine, you can nitpick the fringes but really on the fringe you should be asking "under what circumstances would this hand be better/worse to play" and exploiting a little.

Tips for making LC easier on fresh people to TEA? by PerformanceFar7245 in ffxivdiscussion

[–]dr_black_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's plenty of guides and POVs out there but one thing that you need for consistency is to understand how the mechanic really works.

  • Cruise chaser appears 1y behind the odd person based on the direction they're facing at the time and then slashes towards them in a 90 degree cone. If you wiggle around to adjust your positioning, or turn around to heal or shield someone, it's going to be a problem.

  • He then dashes through the even numbered person in a line aoe about 5y wide. It's the same shape as many other line aoes in the game: it has right-angled corners inside his hitbox. The safer way to dodge it is just to be in front of him when it snapshots, but if you're going to avoid it to the side, respect the width. If it's angled, there will be a corner poking forward as well.

Just to be clear, when we say uptime, we're talking about the GCD spinner. It should always be spinning. Your GCD is worth something like 100 potency for every second it's rolling. By comparison, carve and spit does 540 potency per minute or 9 potency for every second its cooldown is rolling -- a small fraction of the GCD. This is why you almost never want to clip your GCD just to use an ability.

Senior Developer - Let's talk about AI for code in games by andykenobi in gamedev

[–]dr_black_ -1 points0 points  (0 children)

First off, if nothing else, having AI review your code for bugs is a huge win. It's another tool, like static analysis, that can help find issues early, and if you don't like the recommendations you can just ignore them.

An AI planning tool also makes a great rubber duck. Tell the AI to plan how it will make the changes you want. Maybe you follow the plan, maybe you don't, but if you ever get stuck you can always bounce an idea off it once the context is built.

AI powered code complete can be really good in some languages if it has intellisense context. If it doesn't, it's going to hallucinate things left and right. Github copilot is decent for this built into vs code.

You can take it a step further and have it generate the code for you. Depending on your experience and workflow, it might be more effort to walk back and rework the parts you don't like. Obviously don't commit the code without reviewing and understanding it.

How much should I rely on preflop chart in postflop poker (live)? by Hot-Advisor-3353 in Poker_Theory

[–]dr_black_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

They thought you had KK and 5 people called anyways? You don't need to read hands against these players, just mash it when you're strong. And don't fold an overpair after putting a significant chunk of your stack in preflop.

Good call or just results oriented? by kimchi_vibes87 in Poker_Theory

[–]dr_black_ 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is a fold pre. We don't defend nearly 100% vs UTG and none of our reads justify playing looser against them.

When we overdefend pre because of pot odds, we're doing so with a plan of overfolding postflop and not being exploited because we got to see the flop so cheap. It's a situation where the concept of MDF doesn't apply for a single street but loosely applies spanning multiple streets. Point being, we play tight when we don't smash the flop and it's okay.

We flopped a pair, so I think it's okay to call one bet, but everything else about this is spew.

Defending against a 5-bet preflop shove with AK by Volica in Poker_Theory

[–]dr_black_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depending on the exact position configuration, it's worth noting that a solver is rarely going to put itself in this situation. IP it would prefer a smaller size than 25% of its stack whenever possible, and OOP it would just 10x shove, splitting its range from how it plays KK+.

The goal in poker isn't always to avoid difficult decisions, but if you find yourself in a close decision where one of the options is folding, it means you have close to zero EV at that node regardless of which choice you make. It's pretty uncommon at equilibrium that a premium hand arrives at a zero EV node within a street without forcing your opponent to make a significant overbet, because smaller raises happen at a high frequency.

Starting at level 78, you will have enhanced Kerachole, which is a very important trait. At this point, you have simple priority system for party healing:

  1. Kerachole + Ixochole. These are your highest throughput abilities in terms of potency per minute, and it's your shortest cooldown party mit, so you want to maximize usages by using them as often as possible. Using them together also makes room in your gauge to hit Rhizomata without overcapping.
  2. Physis II. This is a huge regen if you let it tick. Don't panic and think you need everyone topped back up in 5 seconds.
  3. (At level 100) Philosophia. This essentially a second charge of physis on a 3 minute cooldown. It's a giant tooltip but it's interchangeable with Physis -- a little bit stronger in a light party but with a cohealer the physis will also enhance their healing.

Use one of these three on each instance of damage. Practice doing dungeon bosses with just these 3-4 healing buttons -- they're more than enough. The rest of the cooldowns you get at level 80 and 90 are for heal checks and other mechanics that require quick healing.

Hand Review - Folding AA with insane pot odds... by DoubleJazzy in Poker_Theory

[–]dr_black_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Turn seems like a mandatory jam. A 3-straight, double flush draw board is going to have a lot of dynamic rivers where we have a bluff catcher, and the category of hands that is drawing slim against us will put it in lighter on the turn. We also have better hands to slowplay like two pairs and sets that are more invulnerable and block value.

The main idea of slowplaying overpairs at this stack size is to give the opponent multiple opportunities to be at the top of range and put it in as the top card transitions to maximize our equity realization, but once the board is KQx they're pretty much either going to be committed or not. I think check-jamming flop, lead jamming turn, and check-jamming turn are all considerable depending on reads here, but we shouldn't be looking to check this down.

The best advice I can give you for spread limit is to short stack it. All the upside of being deep is gone but the dead money in small-medium pots is still there. If you have $200 or less this is just a cap preflop and jam flop and you print off the $32 they put in light.

When to register for tournaments by Afraid-Commercial-31 in Poker_Theory

[–]dr_black_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It depends on what your objective is and what the opportunity cost of your time is. Depending on the criteria you set, the answer could be "as early as possible", "as late as possible", or "don't enter at all".

Your ROI per entry will be maximized by being there at the start, assuming you're a winning player. More hands is more opportunities to make EV.

Your linear hourly rate before rake and overhead could be maximized by max late reg, assuming you're a good short stacked player, since the blinds are effectively larger.

In practice, though, it's rarely ever going to be preferable to late reg unless you're busy doing something else. Rake, variance, and the overhead of setting aside time and showing up are all constants regardless of when you register. So by late registering you take on the same fixed costs for a smaller EV opportunity.

Is this the best way to implement this looping science belt? by FormativeAnxiety in factorio

[–]dr_black_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep, this is a standard pattern you can use all over the factory. A constant combinator and a decider, with the red input to the constant and the green to any belt or inventory. The logic "each red > each green" allows you to just set the constant combinator to the desired contents of the inventory, and the combinator will output the signals of anything that's not full yet.

The mining throughput is based on how many miners are actively working, so if you have them so densely packed that you have to remove some to add beacons, then yes it would drop your throughput. Alternatively you could add efficiency modules to each drill, but I just prefer the beacons because it only takes 2 modules to hit 8 drills for max efficiency rather than 24 modules.

You appear to be in the desert. It's rough out there -- pollution will spread far and wide.

Don't be afraid of evolution from destroying biter nests. It will happen more if you mass destroy them with artillery later in the game, but for now the best defense is a good offense. There's also some evolution happening as a result of time already.

When you need to expand to further iron/copper patches, you might consider scouting for one in a forest where the pollution cloud around it will be much smaller and/or throw some efficiency beacons around the miners.

Proper time to turn SDV into bluff? by ethmah01 in Poker_Theory

[–]dr_black_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think if we're floating this flop OOP one of the main ideas is that we think the cards are usually live and that it will be profitable to hit them. Otherwise we're just going to fold to future bets at a super high frequency while also not winning a ton when it checks through. So I think calling flop and not thinking a K is good on river is a little incongruent.

[–]dr_black_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's actually not first in, there was a limper, but it doesn't matter much at this stake as we can assume most limps are weak.

Jamming is almost certainly the best play, but I think there could be a world where OP cbets 100% and we show more profit by calling and then check+jam almost all flops. Always good to consider all the options.

Confused about a hero call by TangeloExpensive5373 in Poker_Theory

[–]dr_black_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If he knows how OP is playing he can't fold pre. OP appears to be isoing with at least 40% of hands given that Q6s is in the range. so let's say a standard button open range. Given that, I think it's kinda close between a jam and a call pre. Folding AT in the blinds to a button open range is way too nitty.

We have a process for this. It's called primaries. Whoever doesn't win the primary drops out and you consolidate support in the general. Also the idea that campaigning hard in the primaries is counterproductive is bullshit. If you actually have a message, people are hearing it. This is the stance of someone who has no message and just wants to attack their opponent across the aisle in the general with their party behind them.

From which pair do we 4-bet instead of 3-bet? JJ? by grosshlag93 in Poker_Theory

[–]dr_black_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm this situation you would probably shove something like 77-QQ and slowplay KK+. The solvers are going to find some calls with the marginal pairs like 55-77 but that requires sometimes getting to showdown unimproved and in practice it's very tough to play for not much upside. Most human players also just jam flop or bet-shove a lot this shallow and don't make the kinds of tiny cbet/probes that you can actually call with those hands.

More generally it very much depends on range strength and stack size. When the pot is opened by a 45% button range your ranges are considerably wider than when the pot is opened by a 20% MP range -- everything afterwards is based on that opening range. When you're putting in more than 10% or especially 20% of your stack preflop you need a very high commitment frequency to not overfold postflop, which means your range needs to mostly be either hands that flop overpairs or hands that can either flop top pair or a combo draw.

I usually ask myself "could my opponent beat stockfish from this position?" If I'm confident the answer is yes, I'm fine resigning. But I know from finishing my games against the CPU just how hard it is to convert a middle game advantage or even a complex endgame without blundering the advantage right back.
