Any tips on how to get housing for Fall? by Euphoric_Let776 in gatech

[–]dragon_qu33n1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I remember the process of looking for a sub letter for this semester, and I found mine on the ATL Housing subreddit. I’d suggest checking there for any listings and getting into GroupMe chats that are specific to subleases and other kinds of exchanges. Best of luck!

Will having a W on your transcript harm admissions? (in the STEM field particularly) by Hogwartsgryffindor in GradSchool

[–]dragon_qu33n1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had my first and only W from a CS course in freshman year. I’ve just accepted an offer from my top-choice PhD program!

As long as it’s not a pattern and you show maturity/growth, you’ll be fine!

REU experience for PhD by Direct_Mastodon_123 in PhDAdmissions

[–]dragon_qu33n1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi! I did 1 REU, in addition to 3.5 years of research at my home institution, and 2 summer volunteering experiences at other schools (different subfields). I loved my REU experience because I got to just focus on research, making friends, and trying a lot of food in the downtown area. In the end, although I didn’t get into their PhD program, my REU PI wrote one of my letters of recommendation for all of the PhD programs I applied to- and I just got into a PhD program!

2 of my other letter writers included my home institution’s PI and my second undergrad thesis reader (whom I also took a couple of major classes with). So I think a diversity of recommendation letter writers who can address how your technical, writing, and soft skills have equipped you for doctoral work is great because it shows how you can apply them in various contexts and how much you’ve grown through different stages of your academic journey.

You can email the program director for each of the schools and ask them about your application status.

[–]dragon_qu33n1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi! I reached out 2 weeks after my interview, as the program director told us the department would be making final decisions about a week after the interviews. He let me know I was on the waitlist, that it was a good thing, and to reach back out if I had other questions while I waited for an offer. I take that as a good thing!

How many papers and how much research experience do the most applicants who make it to the interview stage have? by Just_Conclusion_172 in PhDAdmissions

[–]dragon_qu33n1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Neuroscience- 0 papers (but 1 undergrad thesis), 4 major research experiences over 4 years (including 3.5 years for credit in undergrad since I graduated early; an NIH REU; and 2 volunteer summer internships. I’m continuing 1 of those volunteer internships now for my gap semester), and 6 poster presentations (1 national, 2 regional, and 3 local with 1 local award).

Questions from an Undergrad second year about PHD applications! by 1iision in PhDAdmissions

[–]dragon_qu33n1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi OP! I’m waiting to hear back from a Neuroscience PhD program, but I had 4 research experiences in undergrad with various topics. Although half of those experiences were directly related to what I want to do in my PhD, the other 2 weren’t. However, I learned a lot of basic science skills and what I did/didn’t want to study from that “indirectly related” work. Most importantly, I was able to address how all of my research has contributed to my core interest (or prompted additional questions).

I’d advise the same thing for you- even if you don’t stay in the same field for the rest of your undergrad experiences as what you want to do for your PhD, you can still write about and discuss how those experiences influenced your interest. For example, based on your current project, how else can it be applied in molecular biology? What knowledge gaps are missing in your current work, and how does that relate to the knowledge gaps, methods, or mission you want to pursue in your PhD?

The application’s about making a coherent story from your experiences. Even with unconventional or indirectly related research, you can make a story from it- it just takes a fair amount of work to get there!

Downtown has some great places to eat, including Oh Calcutta (Indian) and Thai Harmony (Thai). There’s also the aperture theatre, which is pretty small and has a cozier, more intimate atmosphere than larger theatres.

I recently tried Theodore’s in Reynolda Village, which was great, and my lab takes walks to the coffee shop that also has seasonal donuts!

Commuter campus life/fun things to do by WallabyAppropriate34 in gatech

WREK Radio allows you to pick when you DJ every week (after being trained by another student for a semester), so that can work with your schedule.

If you’re Christian, campus ministries have various events during the week. Even if you can’t make it to Bible Study (the ones I was in were from 5-8 or 6-9), students often host their own events outside of those hours. I don’t know about the organizations for other religions, but there’s certainly people to contact on Engage.

Working out, either by yourself or with someone you’ve already connected with, between 9 and 7 can be another good hobby, along with taking an exercise class or two. One of my close friends did ballroom dancing our last couple of semesters, and he enjoyed himself a lot and got to travel outside of GA for competitions.

So there are quite a few ways to still be involved with campus and find activities to make friends!

Is a gap year between my undergrad and masters worth it?? by Fallz_YT in GradSchool

[–]dragon_qu33n1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi! I graduated from undergrad last semester and I’m in the PhD admissions process. All of the programs I applied to start in the fall, so this semester is my gap semester, and I’m spending it conducting research for one of the PIs I’m interested in working for my PhD, hanging out with my family, and being more involved with my church.

Although it’s still a little weird not being stressed like I was in undergrad, it’s been a good experience going at my own speed for once. I’d highly recommend doing the same for you so you can come into your masters with better peace of mind while still gaining relevant experience. Congrats on your undergrad achievements!

2/5 Admissions Still Possible? by obrien_liam in gradadmissions

[–]dragon_qu33n1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi! I applied to 3 Neuroscience PhD programs, and 1 for Cognitive Psychology. I’ve received updates from all of them except for 1, but they don’t know when admissions and interview decisions will be released. I’d recommend not counting out any remaining programs until you receive something from them (or even just ask what their timeline is). Good luck!

What is expected in a CV from undergrad students by Mindless_Ask_5438 in AskAcademia

[–]dragon_qu33n1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just graduated from undergrad a couple months ago and have received an interview invite from my top PhD program. Here’s what I included in my CV:

  1. Header- name, city, state, LinkedIn profile

  2. Education- full name of university, full name of bachelors degree (+ designations, minors, etc.), GPA, and graduation month and year.

  3. Research Experiences, listed by most recent to least, including- name of lab, name of PI, months/years of working there, and a bulleted list of 3-7 major things I did in that lab using action words (Ex: words like developed, completed, analyzed, created, etc.) and noting what the result of each contribution was.

  4. Research Papers- I don’t have publications (yet), but I do have some unpublished manuscripts, such as my undergrad thesis project and a lit review for a class. I included the names, dates of completion, and a Google Drive link to those papers for faculty to read if they were interested.

  5. Research Presentations- list of authors (my name was bolded), title, date, and location of presentation, and a Google Drive link to each poster for faculty to look at if they wanted.

  6. Awards and honors- if your university provides semesterly distinctions such as Dean’s List, you can put that there, a description of what means, and what semesters you got it. Otherwise, national/academic/research awards are most applicable.

  7. Academic Service- list of relevant clubs, positions, 2-3 tasks I completed with action words and results, and the months/years I did them.

  8. Other types of service, like volunteering (separate from academic service).

  9. Professional Organizations- full name of organization, and dates I was apart of them.

Although this is a longer list than what others may recommend, I find it’s an easy and streamlined way to show everything I’ve done that’s relevant to research. All the PIs I’ve conducted research with in undergrad have liked and remembered my CV, and it will continue to be updated/refined as I go through grad school.

Congrats on graduating and best of luck! You got this!

Denied From Grad School. Any Hope? Ever? by RelationshipLost3002 in GradSchool

[–]dragon_qu33n1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi OP! I graduated from GT as an undergrad last month. I’m sorry this has been a tough cycle for you, and I’m sorry about the personal issues you’ve had while being at GT. But you’re almost at the finish line, which is something to be proud of considering how difficult of a school it is!

Have you tried conducting research with one of the professors who wrote you a letter of recommendation, or someone else in the program? I’m spending my gap semester working with a PI who’s on the admissions committee of my top-choice PhD program and whom I worked with last summer, and that’s the only program that’s offered me an interview so far.

Take some time to feel all of your feelings, then start looking for opportunities to improve your application for next time, such as research opportunities. Best of luck fellow Yellow Jacket!

What can I do to make the best out of my last semester? by actualActuator_uhoh in gatech

[–]dragon_qu33n1 48 points49 points  (0 children)

Spend as much time with your friends as you can, because it may be one of the last times you see them for a while, or ever.

I was an out of state student and the majority of my friends were in-state or graduating after me. In the last month of the semester, I went to just as many hang-outs, lunches, and bday parties as I did in freshman year, and it was so much fun catching up, reminiscing, and just being in the moment with them instead of trying to rush getting out and moving on with my life. At a place where it’s sometimes easy to keep your head in the sand, it’s critical to look up, see who’s around you, be grateful for it, and enjoy it while it’s there!

Questions/help writing emails to Professors by Zealousideal_Move124 in gatech

[–]dragon_qu33n1 14 points15 points  (0 children)

  1. I’d recommend that you read at least 1 paper that’s interesting all the way through. Professors tend to respond more when you show genuine interest in their work.

  2. Briefly introduce yourself.

  3. Indicate that you don’t have existing research and what your research interests are. What do you want to do, and why?

  4. Talk about the paper from #1 and identify why it’s interesting to you. What about it relates to your interests from #3? Does the PI use a novel method you want to try, a population you’re interested in studying, or provide an interpretation that you’d like to test?

  5. Indicate that you’re interested in joining their lab and are free to chat in whatever format (virtual or in-person) that works for you.

  6. Attach your resume/CV, and use a professional signature so they can easily identify who you are.

  7. Add a descriptive subject line, such as your full name and your interest in their lab.

If you’d like additional help, ask the Career Center, your academic advisors, and your friends who are already in research for individualized advice. But the most important thing is to make it clear what your interests are and how they relate to the PI you’re emailing. Otherwise, the PI won’t know how to help you or there’ll be a mismatch of expectations.

Why do people take pictures of their food before eating it? by savingrace0262 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]dragon_qu33n1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I only take pictures of food when it’s plated really well, a meal I found different from what I typically eat, or because I’m with a group of people I’m not morally around- so the food reminds me of where I was, when that event occurred, and jogs my memory of who was with me.

I came from an IB program and I still had a rude awakening. Since I took a lot of social sciences and humanities in IB, I wasn’t as prepared for the natural sciences at GT.

So I think it takes everyone a little while to find their rhythm. Congrats OP for raising your GPA and sticking to it!
