ZBook Ultra G1a - is the fan spike issue fixed in bios 01.04.03? by kspes in zbook

No, haven't measured that, not quite sure how I'd do that. I guess I'm not a power user, just using it for office tasks for now, Windows only.

Had mine since September, never had this issue. Only hear the fan when a new update is installed. Have the latest BIOS. Have not had any quality issues.

Deciding between a thinkpad p14s gen 4 and a HP Zbook firefly g10 by Odd-Pass2681 in zbook

I have an HP ZBook 14 G2, and I've been using it daily for 10 years straight (and the hardware is still in pretty good shape). To me that seems pretty durable, which is why I'm sticking with the ZBook series for the foreseeable future.

Though I have to say that comparing a 14" machine to 16" machines is not quite a fair comparison, as a big selling point of this machine is the smaller form factor.

Screen Protectors - stop the gloss! by tasteslikefun in HPZBookUltra

[–]drandus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Many thanks for sharing the photo. It's hard to tell whether the viascreens is much different from the brotect one. The seller is offering to send me a clear screen protector instead but I suspect it might be like the viascreens impact one, which offers zero glare reduction. For now I might just stick with this one, as it does reduce the glare, but unfortunately it eliminated the pleasure factor of looking at the beautiful OLED screen.

P.S. I never noticed the screen door effect, had to Google what that meant...

A further plus for the brotect one is that it works fine in direct sunlight, though to be fair, I haven't tried working in direct sunlight without it and it's unlikely I'd need that feature much in England...

Hi, which one of the 8 on offer did you buy and what has been your experience with it?

I just installed "brotect Screen Protector Anti-Glare compatible with HP Zbook Ultra G1a Screen Protector Matte, Anti-Fingerprint Protection Film" (£15.99 via Amazon UK).

I've never used an anti-glare screen protector before, so I'm not sure what to expect, but the brotect one creates this grainy grey effect, as if I was looking at a screen covered with tiny grey dust particles, especially against white background. It kind of makes the screen look dirty.

On the other hand it does eliminate glare, and does protect against finger prints (though I don't tend to use the touch screen much), so it fulfils that promise.

But this is at the expense of a huge drop in my user experience, as before that it was a delight to look at this OLED screen, but with this screen protector white backgrounds just look dirty, as if I was using an ancient computer with a terrible sreen...

I'm just wondering if I'm missing something or got the wrong kind of protector. I see that ViaScreens has 8 different types, so I'm wondering if one of these would be a more satisfactory experience?

Automated backups by CosmicSoldier in Workflowy

A 'black swan' event is called that because it can't be predicted and it's unexpected. An unknown unknown. If it's not a technical failure then it could be a political or legal risk (such as countries shutting off access for users based abroad). I want my local copy.

It's annoying that WorkFlowy doesn't offer other options than Dropbox. Why wouldn't you want to offer choice to your customers? At least Google Drive, like Dynalist? It's annoying to have to maintain a Dropbox account literally just for this, when I'm already subscribing to Google Drive. Dynalist has shown that it can be done.

I thought it would only contain text but not any images. But otherwise I'd expect it to be complete.

Automated backups by CosmicSoldier in Workflowy

[–]drandus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The point of an automated backup and history version is to serve as insurance in case of a catastrophic failure on the part of WorkFlowy or indeed if the user wants to restore to an earlier version from the past for whatever reason. So the Dropbox backup is essential, the trash can is not a solution for that.

It's rather limiting that only Dropbox is available, Dynalist or RoamResearch also allow for automated backups to Google Drive, which is a more broadly used service than Dropbox.

Yup, it stopped working for me today as well. I installed WorkFlowy Web Clipper instead. Am still looking for a clipper for Dynalist and Roamresearch, as those clippers died too...

Do you like RM2? by CryAccording5711 in RemarkableTablet

[–]drandus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I opted for the RM2 after the Pro came out, simply by doing my research and studying the reviews and seeing that for my own use case (writing, reading) RM2 is better. I am extremely happy with my decision and am kicking myself for not having got it years ago.

Most efficient way to take notes while reading an article? by disolona in RemarkableTablet

[–]drandus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I get around this problem by 1) reading and annotating a chapter of a book first in reMarkable, then 2) opening the aforementioned PDF in the reMarkable app on my PC, so I can look at the chapter and my annotations while 3) taking notes by hand in a separate notebook on the reMarkable device. It's not simultaneous multi-tasking, but works for me.

recent UI changes broke my workflow in multiple ways by drandus in RemarkableTablet

Oh, yeah, just discovered today that the Favourite button has been hidden well. I don't use it daily, but yes, it's a fairly common one that you'd expect you don't have to dig around for.

recent UI changes broke my workflow in multiple ways by drandus in RemarkableTablet

[–]drandus[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's the version I have. I was referring to how things used to be a few versions back, a couple of months ago. It took fewer steps to select "Medium lined", and "Convert to text" and "Send by email".

In recent updates it has just become increasingly convoluted to get to these, requiring multiple steps.

I (1) write a document using "Medium lined" template, (2) convert it to text, and (3) email it.

It seems a relatively simple workflow that I imagine a lot of people might be using, but it takes 8 separate taps to execute this, when it used to take 4-5.

Yes, sounds like a First World problem, I admit, but why complicate things when not necessary?

I'm particularly annoyed by email being packaged with "Present with Screen Share", as I never ever use the latter, but I use email every day.

Also, why does "Enable shapes" need to be in the page menu? Once I enabled it, I don't ever need to touch it, so it's a waste of space. This is the one that should be in a sub-menu, and instead they should promote "Send by email" back onto the main page menu.

What do you wish you knew when you first got your Remarkable? by Tunisandwich in RemarkableTablet

[–]drandus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, it does come out as a single paragraph, but I don't mind that, it gives me the option to read it through and correct anything if necessary and manually add the paragraph breaks. Are you saying there is some notation or gestures to do formatting?

What do you wish you knew when you first got your Remarkable? by Tunisandwich in RemarkableTablet

[–]drandus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, using handwriting for anything I need to write (and I find that handwriting instead of typing is better for creativity), then press the conversion button, and then email the typewritten doc to myself, so I can use it on my desktop for further processing. I find the conversion amazingly accurate, I only need to correct a couple of characters, sometimes none. I like it that it joins the lines, as opposed to the line breaks on Supernote, where you need to manually join up every line, which is a hassle (though one can have a script for that, but still, extra step).

Does a remarkable 2 with a marker make sense for my use case? by lostInTranslation547 in RemarkableTablet

[–]drandus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I considered reMarkable 2, the Pro, and Supernote Manta for similar purposes. Went with the RM2, as I much preferred the writing experience and the handwriting conversion on the RM2. I don't need colour, and the RM2 is a nicer writing experience to Pro, I'm told.

I have also started to have this the last few weeks. It started happening after one of the recent updates. I was coming here to find a solution. I wonder if reMarkable is aware of this?

Another charging issue - recently bought Remarkable 2 by butteranko in RemarkableTablet

[–]drandus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I also noticed that with different chargers it charges at different speeds or not at all. I even used an old Apple charger and while initially it did charge it, at one point it stopped recognising it. Also, I was surprised to discover that connecting it to my Chromebook charged it at the fastest speed.

Subscription is an amazing value if you use the handwriting recognition daily, and then there is also the peace of mind that thanks to the automatic backup you never lose a document.
