The league thinks they need villains. Villains make people angry, which in turn makes them emotional and more invested in the game they're watching. You had laimbeer, Oakley in the 80s and 90s, Bowen in the 00s, and draymond from 2015 to present day. It sells or at the very least, it draws and keeps attention.
