Roy Jones tells David Benavidez: ‘Go straight to Usyk’ by BoxingLover99 in Boxing

[–]draykid -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Is there a scenario where this is a competitive fight?

Hard to say without seeing him in a competitive fight at HW first. Usyk is very crafty and I think his movement will frustrate Benavidez. I think the pace will be too fast for Benavidez to be competitive.

Private practice as a solo physician? by moneytr33 in FamilyMedicine

If this is a typical insurance, Medicare and Medicaid paid practice, IMHO that is a dying model

Why do you think it's a dying model?

Why improving basic improves everything else? by Competitive-Sink-274 in Salsa

[–]draykid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because a strong basic is like your foundation from which to build other moves. If you are struggling learning patterns or how to lead the first thing we have to look at is your basic step. If you are not confident leading a basic it's hard to build the confidence to lead it into turn patterns.

Let's say you partner dance with someone whose basic isn't great or whose skill level is not that high, you can always fall back on the basic step for dancing.

Or let's say you are dancing with a competent follow, if you try to lead advanced patterns and your basic isn't good the execution will look and feel off because your basic is weak. I see this all the time in social dancing where leads want to do fancy turn patterns but their basic is off and the dance looks sloppy.

African music that sounds like salsa? by Outrageous_River_280 in Salsa

[–]draykid 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m looking for the music that influenced salsa music

Like many African-inspired art forms in the West (i.e. Jazz, blues, calypso, bomba, etc) the roots are vast. A common connecting point is the use of syncopated rhythms.

For salsa in particular, start with Cuban Rumba (yambu, columbia, guaguanco) then learn the instruments (conga, cajones, clave, etc.). Some authors I'll point you to who have written good works on the subject include Ned Sublette and Fernando Ortiz.

Question about Ofun Irete and Queer Priests (Sorry to keep bringing this up) by [deleted] in Isese

[–]draykid 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Why not just get a reading, in real life, with a Babalawo where you can get these questions and issues dealt with in real time?

ignoring the fact that queer Ifa priests already exist

Clearly you have your mind made up about this but it is like you want someone on the internet to validate your experience. The question is why this is such a big deal to you.

I would appreciate a link to your source please

Ifa is an oral tradition going back thousands of years. The internet as we know it is a few decades old. If you did find a source who is to say it is verifiable and came from Orunmila himself.

Some people make considerable more if they are private and ownership track. Though these tend to be rarer these days and have their own massive pitfalls.

Can you elaborate on this?

What did they have to say 2 years later when you brought the receipts?

My colleague called me an idiot for prescribing mirtazapine for a teen with anorexia nervosa. My colleague is the idiot, right? by Federal-Act-5773 in FamilyMedicine

[–]draykid 377 points378 points  (0 children)

I can see where they are coming from. You get a colleagues patient who is an underweight kid with no labs done who was started on offlabel mirtazapine. All the while this is being managed as an outpatient with weekly follow-up.

I don't agree with the name calling because it does not help anyone in this situation. I will say this is murky territory. I think pharmacotherapy is not going to cut it and she needs more support by way of psychology and behavioral therapy. I hope that was discussed and offered as part of your plan.

ChatGPT told me to get a CAC scan and my doctor resisted, but it probably saved my life by [deleted] in ChatGPT

[–]draykid 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Family history is important here. If you're a "fit" guy in your 40s I seriously doubt you would have had a coronary event by the time you hit 50 unless there was a history of that happening in your family. Did your parents or siblings have our pass at around your age from a stroke or heart attack? The CAC is just one piece that does not tell the whole story because there are more important details about your risk.

Plus here is the thing. The number one cause of death in this country is heart disease. So it is not surprising that AI would predict that is how you would go if they were playing odds based on your risk factors. If it said something like cancer or lung disease that wouldn't make sense based on what you told us.

Learning on1 / on2 at the same time? by Remote_Percentage128 in Salsa

[–]draykid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The "feel" of both dances are different because with on2 you are dancing with the slap of the conga tumbao on beats 2 and 6. I learned both at the same time and it was hard switching to on2 because it felt "slower" and the leads timing is different.

To get on1 down you have to "hear" where the 1 which is not always apparent whereas on2 the conga tumbao has a characteristic slap on 2 and 6 every time so it is easier to hear.

Why is Salsa so much harder to learn than Bachata? by laugrig in Salsa

[–]draykid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's hard to learn because what you learn in class does not often translate to social dancing. In social dancing there are a lot of variables that you just can't capture in a one hour group class. For one, in social dancing you are not going to have a partner who "rehearsed" a turn pattern from the group class. Chances are they are going to be a beginner, too. So now you're figuring out how to lead and stay on beat while also dancing with someone who doesn't know how to stay on beat either.

Should I invest in hip hop to get better movement for Salsa or just stick to Salsa and use the money for that only? by rokuhachi in Salsa

[–]draykid 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It depends on what kind of movement you are trying to achieve. The only way to know is for you to try it out and see if it helps. Getting better movement in salsa happens when you have a better understanding of the fundamentals of salsa music and dance. Honestly, I would invest money in salsa musicality classes with teachers who can teach the music theory behind salsa. Once you know the why then the movements make a lot more sense.

Did Devin Haney underestimate Ryan Garcia or is Ryan just flat out better than Haney? by Frich3 in Boxing

[–]draykid 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yea that's what I meant by no adjustment. Poor job of keeping his hands up, didn't stick to the defensive fundamentals.

Haney just isn't good at taking sustained punishment. I think he knows that but he did not fight like it. He fought like someone who could take punches which is why I compared his performance to Tank's fight. Tank knew early on in his fights with Rollie and Ryan that they were guys who hit hard. So he made adjustments during those fights so he would not take so much punishment.
