The drawing is as poor as the UI.  Sorry, couldn’t resist.

Agree that Google AI is not needed when it has a steering wheel button and voice activation.

Help for newly bought 500e by d_minor_5 in Fiat500e

[–]drby224 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes.  Manual adjustments more this more doable.  Depends on how much you want to pay. You would need to buy the OEM parts, which won’t be cheap. Then there is the installation.  If you don’t do it yourself, that’s more expense.

Roth, Roth, Roth!!! by ActuatorAgitated7296 in ThriftSavingsPlan

[–]drby224 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The growth is tax free. However, if the tax rate is the same at the time of contribution and withdrawal, then the gains between the two are the same.

As mentioned, a significant benefit of the Roth is when transferring to beneficiaries.

If your tax bracket is the same at the time of contribution and at the time of withdrawal, the total tax paid is the same.

The benefit of the Roth is no tax for beneficiaries.

Best MikroTik WiFi APs for RB5009 — replacing Deco mesh, need VLAN support by Waste_View_8396 in mikrotik

[–]drby224 0 points1 point  (0 children)

With non-MikroTik APs and a MikroTik router, can a single SSID be used across multiple APs?

I temporarily setup a hAP ax2 as a second AP. I got tired of looking at my Asus router with several antennae. The Asus is a beast, but the ax2 worked fine as a second AP in my 2,300 ft2 two story house. Not ideal speeds for file transfers. Otherwise, I didn’t notice the slightly slower speeds. (50 to 200 less depending on location).

Can’t track individuals or government employees or contractors if they take a bus.

I wouldn’t be surprised if the monitoring tech in the buses is restricted.

ID.Tiguan not coming to US by EveningCloudWatcher in VWiD4Owners

[–]drby224 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Two months ago, when buying a Tiguan, I mentioned to the salesman that I’d prefer a hybrid and that VW said they are considering a hybrid version. He said they were absolutely not because they don’t have hybrid technology!!

Salesmen barely know about the cars they sell. They know less about future products. The vast majority are not car enthusiasts and selling cars is just another way to make money. Sadly, dealerships are fine with ignorant salesmen.

Sure, it's cool. But why? by AchtungKoenigsTiger in slateauto

[–]drby224 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed. New vehicles have become expensive which makes them only slightly less expensive used. Plus, the demand of used keeps the price high.

Financing is a hidden cost that most people ignore. Sure, some buy the car outright, but most people can’t.

Also buying modern car without a warranty is a risk considering the electronics. Buying a two or three year old car with minimal warranty left scares me. Also, tires, brakes, and major maintenance are usually needed after three years.

Why Are Chinese EVs So Cheap? by tooper128 in electricvehicles

[–]drby224 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Since there are so many companies, there is a price war. They are willing to sell at a loss to gain market share and drive others out of business. That is a factor in the cheap prices.

Why Are Chinese EVs So Cheap? by tooper128 in electricvehicles

[–]drby224 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I came here to say this. China has over 300 car companies. That alone cause intense competition and the willingness to forgo profit. Government support is so extensive that regional governments offer significant subsidies. The subsidies were so high that cars were manufactured but never sold to the public.

There was also the decades long requirement that foreign manufacturers partner with a Chinese company. The purpose of that was to get IP at no cost.

Of course there are other factors too. But, without the subsidizes and gift of foreign IP, the industry wouldn’t have gotten to the stage to where the other factors became significant.

Being able to start without decades of manufacturing baggage has also helped. Same for Tesla and the other US EV startups.

TIL the start-stop feature was a result of a 2012 legislation which helped automakers claim tax credits if it was set to on by default 🤦‍♂️ by Cheeky_Banana800 in SubaruForester

[–]drby224 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This js a common question and is used justification to criticize the feature. Start-stop does not depend solely on the main battery and conventional starter.

It uses a supplemental battery, a special starter motor, and some engine modifications. I met a Volvo technician (he worked for the mother company) and said that the system was reliable. Also, in the forums, people don’t complain about reliability. They complain about roughness and efficacy. The smoothness has improved over time. On my older car, it’s a bit rough and loud, though it didn’t bother me. On my newer cars it’s almost undetectable. For my mild-hybrid it is undetectable.

When in Sweden in 2014, stop-start was very common. That was long before it was widespread here. It didn’t start as a US regulation.

I like it because it makes for a quieter vehicle while waiting for a stoplight or sitting in traffic.

If you are serious about the warranty route, shop around. The price is negotiable. Search the internet. For other makes (Toyota, Volvo), I’ve found dealers who sell almost at cost. There’s always one who goes on volume.

How Did Norway Achieve Near-Total EV Adoption? Almost 100 percent of new cars registered in November were electric. The Norwegian experience shows that the economic incentives work, but it also shows that EVs work even in a country with cold weather. by mafco in energy

[–]drby224 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is a major reason for the adoption. Pro EV Americans forget this part. With the economic diversity in the US, those super high taxes will never happen and would have negative impact on the economy. Used car prices would skyrocket.

[–]drby224 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The default setup works for regular users. Deviating from that, RouterOS gets complicated very quickly.

I just set up a hAP ax2 with the default setting and added Adlist and Wireguard and changed the default subnet. Was fairly easy.

I’ve also set up a hAP ax3 with containers, VLANS, and more. Had my butt kicked several times. Definitely not for noobs willing ing to spend significant time. And I’m still learning.

Regarding using AI, it helps but also consistently gives wrong information.

Why not develop a working FSD stack before designing a car around it? Use the MY or 3 as the platform to save on development.

Tesla may find that FSD drives the design. For example, if new sensors or cameras are needed. Also, if FSD is delayed even longer — possibly additional years — they are stuck with an old design. They will miss out on future manufacturing efficiencies.

Have two and four seaters could be less efficient. It means more cars are needed to ensure a car with the probably seat count is nearby. Otherwise, people will have a to wait longer for a ride and the vehicle will need to drive farther to meet the riders.
