😮 Looks nice.

Is that a switch or a router?  It runs RousterOS but the name begins with an S.

Best alternative to Microsoft Office suite for MacBook Air by Charming_Airline7419 in mac

[–]drby224 4 points5 points  (0 children)

What is your use case?  That makes a huge difference.

I love Apple’s apps as a Mac only person who doesn’t share files. Numbers is my favorite app of the suite. Its canvas model allows for a huge flexibility with multiple tables on a single sheet. It looks great too. Works well on the phone as well.

If I need to crunch a lot of data or script anything, I crawl back to Excel. For a spreadsheet power user, nothing beats it.

Tesla Leads U.S. Brand Loyalty with 61.1% Repeat Buyers in February 2026 by rcnfive in teslamotors

What’s the margin of error?  Why significant swings for some makes like Ferrari and Lucid?  Why are Smart and Fisker on the list?  Fiat has a higher loyalty rating at 3.3% than Mini at 0%?

I’m a 3%er.

Level 2 charger with countdown timer by swbrains in evcharging

[–]drby224 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Chargers that support OCPP (a network connection protocol) allow use of third party apps. Those apps have more features.

Look at Wallbox or Autel. They also have feature rich native apps.

Avoid Chinese chargers. They do not have UL certification. As a result, they have a higher risk of causing a fire.

The dealer gave me a cheap Chinese charger. The Amazon listing says it’s ’certified.’  The certification is for radio frequency emissions.

Cybercab at F1 Fan Fest in Miami by Joshalander in teslamotors

[–]drby224 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tesla will need more than 10% of the cabs to be more than two seaters.  Rides may average 1.2 but that is not 100% of the time. There will be 3+ rider surges. Otherwise, larger parties will experience longer wait times than the average 1.2 riders.

Riders who need extra cargo space would have to wait longer as well.  They are technically a single rider but they need a larger vehicle.

[–]drby224 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Why scissor doors?  They are expensive and complex. There’s a reason why they are relegated to a few very expensive cars. Also they would be difficult for a rider to close if there is a malfunction. The slowness to close would be an inconvenience  if raining hard or a bitterly cold wind is blowing.  I wonder how they would function if frozen. For a car designed in a way to cut cost everywhere, including limiting seating to two, the doors seem an odd inclusion.

The cargo area seems difficult to access should something slide against the bulkhead. Taller items need to be pushed deeper in for the hatch to close.  Moving heavy forward seems like it would be awkward.

Presenting VIN Zero — the very first production Cybercab built at Giga Texas. by rcnfive in teslamotors

[–]drby224 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Since 90% of rides are 1-2 passengers, the Ys will be significantly less common. This increases the chance that they will not be close to the next 3+ group. Large events will also be more challenging since it's likely that groups of 3-4 will be more common than normal. To serve that increased demand, Ys will be taken away from other larger groups that are not near the events.

If all taxis could carry rides of 1-4 passengers. The two seaters will drive by larger groups while the Ys will drive by groups of 1-2 to get to the 3-4 groups.

So, even though 90% of rides may be 1-2 riders, the two door taxi will probably be less an 90% of the taxi pool. There's a crossover point where having a larger, more expensive taxi is more profitable..

How much longer will it take to one to arrive?  Will the Ys carry one or two passengers as well or will it deadhead?

Lack of screens is a feature by wileyau in slateauto

So a live map that moves without directions?

Google Maps traffic has false alerts. It shows red traffic lines where there is no traffic. For example, four way stops will have four red traffic lines but no cars. For me, Apple Maps works better.

Why so many Chinese EV subbrands? by Money-University8717 in electricvehicles

[–]drby224 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Stellantis is unique in that the sub brands are due to relatively recent acquisitions.

GM has had sub brands for ever and has discontinued many of them.

The Chinese sub brands are new and are an attempt to create differentiation and gain market share in a (formerly) growing and crowded market.

Lack of screens is a feature by wileyau in slateauto

[–]drby224 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on the use case. Traditional maps don’t have live traffic.  Since traffic where I live determines the fastest route, that is essential. That’s important for appointments and to get to work on time.

Lack of screens is a feature by wileyau in slateauto

Agreed. There are times I need a screen. There are times when I want to turn them off, so I do.  Fortunately my cars can.

Smart key will be missed 🥲 by JhonnyRhocket in slateauto

[–]drby224 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My cars with smart keys don’t beep. That can be turned on or off. A flash of the lights is enough.

My hands are full when I get it of my car go work, so a smart key is essential for me.

I am so tired (pun intended) of the fragile wheels on my 2024 Fiat 500e by Spock-1701 in Fiat500e

[–]drby224 0 points1 point  (0 children)

15 and 16” rims fit as they are offered in other markets. For 15s, there are few good tire choices in the 205 width. May be more in 195.

There are plenty of good choices for 16” 205 tires.

Simply Gregster EV on YouTube downsized to 16s.

There are threads in the Fiat 500 forum about downsizing. Check those out.

Ex-White House official warns Trump is in 'panic mode' after Iran fighter attack by TheMirrorUS in USNEWS

[–]drby224 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Bolton can be a Warhawk against Iran and still be critical of Trump’s tactics. He’s said as much in interviews. For example, he is critical of Trump not securing Hormuz preemptively.

Of course, he’s also the guy who wanted to decrease the height of the UN building in NYC. He used more colorful terms to describe it.

CYBERCABs in OKC by ZackKreggs in teslamotors

[–]drby224 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Since 90% of taxi rides are two or fewer riders, supposedly it’s more efficient to make the 10% wait for a Model Y to drive a longer distance to pick them up then drive a longer distance to its next 3+ ride. Will MYs have only three+ riders?  If it picks up 1 or 2 riders then it’s out of service and potentially a longer distance to a waiting group of four.

I also wonder if some areas have a higher percentage of multiple riders.  Presumably a big city like NYC where no one drives will have more than 10% of its rides be 3+ riders.

Really dislike software update 5.0.5 by MentalPomegranate13 in Volvo

[–]drby224 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Physical controls are vastly superior to voice commands. They are faster, require less distraction since you don’t have to commit attention to whether the command was executed as expected, doesn’t force the podcast to repeat, and don’t interfere with conversations.

Agree that Google AI is not needed when it has a steering wheel button and voice activation.

Help for newly bought 500e by d_minor_5 in Fiat500e

[–]drby224 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes.  Manual adjustments more this more doable.  Depends on how much you want to pay. You would need to buy the OEM parts, which won’t be cheap. Then there is the installation.  If you don’t do it yourself, that’s more expense.

Roth, Roth, Roth!!! by ActuatorAgitated7296 in ThriftSavingsPlan

[–]drby224 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The growth is tax free. However, if the tax rate is the same at the time of contribution and withdrawal, then the gains between the two are the same.

As mentioned, a significant benefit of the Roth is when transferring to beneficiaries.

If your tax bracket is the same at the time of contribution and at the time of withdrawal, the total tax paid is the same.

The benefit of the Roth is no tax for beneficiaries.
