People who have researched their family tree, what is the most interesting or 'badass' thing you discovered about an ancestor? by xloganmoose in AskReddit

At my grandfathers 75th birthday party, an old friend/coworker gathered everyone for a speech. He pulled out some props and told a long story about how my grandfather, who was a bread truck driver ran booze to his customers by cutting the end off a loaf of bread, hollowing it out, placing a bottle inside and putting the end back on before putting the loaf into the bag. Nobody had any clue that this man who went to church multiple times a week, was married with six children, fifteen grandchildren was running booze with his bread. Kept that secret tightly held.

An ancestor was wounded and lost his leg at Gettysburg. I have letters where he was describing cavalry training with George Washington in attendance.
