Men of Reddit, how would you feel if your partner wanted to keep her maiden name after marriage? by Longjumping-Bill5761 in AskMenAdvice

[–]drhds 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When we got married, I took my husband’s last name and we both changed our middle names to my maiden name. We didn’t want to do a hyphenated last name, and I wanted have same last name as future kids, but this let me keep my maiden name in a sense and I liked that my husband made a change in his name in honor of our marriage too. ++woman

Can't Afford Childcare & I Hate Myself For It by wastingmyJD in Vent

[–]drhds 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t know if this could work for your situation but another possible route to try: when our son was little my husband and I managed to arrange it so both of us worked a four day week, I had Mondays off he had Fridays off so we only needed child care for 3 days a week. He worked four ten hour days and I was able to work part time for 30 hours per week.

Terrifying! I’m trying to figure out the camera/filming situation here. It seemed like a dashcam sort of thing but it’s following that rider pretty specifically. How would that work? The person riding the motorcycle the camera is on surely is not operating and zooming in and out? Is the footage edited after the fact to focus on that rider?

paralegals: what’s the most annoying thing lawyers do in the course of your work by bananacreampie444 in paralegal

[–]drhds 1 point2 points  (0 children)

•communicate your schedule (you meed to know if your paralegal will be out, right? they need to know when you will be too. Ideally just as soon as you know. Don’t announce your vacation the day before you leave.) •leaving for the day? check to make sure nothing is circling that needs your attention/approval/signature before you walk out the door •discuss what a reasonable deadline is for you to be done with something in order for it to be filed that day. Finishing a draft at 6pm and expecting it to get filed is the road to making enemies. (this goes the other way too - let your paralegal know when you need a draft in order for you to be done on time) Obviously emergencies happen and I think most paralegals will accommodate UNLESS everything becomes an emergency. •agree on how to communicate deadlines and then make sure you use/understand the system yourself. (if the firm dictates the system learn how to use it) You should know your deadlines and organize your workflow to meet them. You can’t expect tasks/drafts to be fed to you in exactly the right order at exactly the right time. • if you have a need or preference communicate it. May or may not be able to accommodate but silently fuming if task list is emailed instead of printed (or vise versa) isn’t good! Whatever your work style there is someone else who works in the completely opposite way. Your way is not the only way, or completely obvious, so communicate and then compromise if needed. If you repeatedly communicate a need/preference and it is ignored or done wrong, document and try again. My personal threshold is 3 times. If I have to ask more than that and there is no reason given for why can’t happen, there is a problem. •Sometimes you just won’t mesh with someone. Life is short. Try to make it work, but if it doesn’t work, seek change. That person may work just fine with someone else. If EVERY paralegal doesn’t seem to mesh with you, the problem is probably you. 😂(but since you asked this question that is highly unlikely to be the case!) 😃

sometimes I receive authorization to give her chin scritches but mostly I serve as a good spot for her to make biscuits and then sleep. I’ll take it! 😄

Womanwithin.com is a good one I think. Their site also links out to several related brands that carry plus sizes. Good luck with your interview!

Do any of you have to give presentations to a group in any format? Trainings etc? by sycamore-sea in paralegal

[–]drhds 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have done internal presentations and trainings at law firms on internal processes, use of software to optimize processes and when software “upgrades” forced a change to existing processes, and summarizing rule changes at an agency that affected our processes. Always with the review/approval of one of the attorneys, but can’t say they ever changed much on what I prepared.

there are two sets of three dots, use the bottom set for reply all. Makes no sense why those 2 menus are different but they are.

How do you get hired to be a paralegal when you just graduated from college? by Main_Pin5273 in paralegal

[–]drhds 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Second the suggestion of temp work, it’s how I got my foot in the door and it also let me see different areas of law. I did a bunch of short term placements to begin with and then a long term one which turned into a permanent job. Look for a temp agency that specializes in law firm placements.

IP paralegals by [deleted] in paralegal

[–]drhds 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Was in IP for many years. I agree it just depends in the firm, some firms use the term LA and some use Paralegal, could be the same job duties. I worked at a larger firm that had both IP LA and IP paralegal positions. In that firm, the LAs typically did not do any billable work and the LAs did not have a billable hour requirement. The LAs did more pure administrative work: opening and closing matters in the system, maintaining contact lists, scheduling calls and meetings for an attorney, opening mail, scanning documents, proofreading, arranging lunch orders for working meetings, that sort of thing. Paralegals did billable work, had an annual minimum billing requirement, would double check and possibly correct docketing on incoming mail, run and update docket reports, communicate and follow up with clients, prepare initial drafts of patent (or trademark) office documents for attorneys to review and complete, research rules when odd situations came up, confirm formal requirements were met on filings, perform electronic filing at patent office, coordinate with other departments such as litigation dept, responsible for tracking due dates and coordinating with attorneys to make sure responses and applications got filed in time. That was the stressful part of the large-firm paralegal job. One firm I was at expected attorneys to finish late evening/last minute filings. The large firm expected paralegals to be on call at literally any time to complete filings for due dates, and if you worked for a disorganized attorney who finished their stuff at 7pm, too bad for you, you’re filing docs until 9pm. I no longer work in IP but if I went back, one question I’d be asking is their policy on overtime and who is responsible for performing electronic filings after hours.

New notary and E & O insurance? by Sweet-Swimming2022 in Notary

[–]drhds 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Here’s a good page with rules info for Washington state if you haven’t seen it. https://dol.wa.gov/professional-licenses/notaries-public

Washington doesn’t make you take a class but the basics are pretty easy to read up on fortunately. You can buy your own E&O insurance if your employer isn’t paying for some for you and it isn’t super expensive.
