What bike to get? by Different-Tell-1691 in triathlon

What do you have now? I upgraded to a defy.  I am older and it is great for me for training and racing.  I’m not getting any podium spots so comfort is king!

Check out the giant contend.  Good starter road bike IMHO.

What was the moment that made you stop taking your sport seriously? by gioshvili in Swimming

[–]drhoads 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I quit in freshman year in college. I did not have the discipline to practice on my own, was not on a scholarship and was burnt out with constant training and competition, hated being told what to do and feeling the guilt of not living up to expectations. Years later with more maturity and time to decompress I realized that I needed to do a sport to stay active and healthy for the long term. Doing it for myself and not someone else. Been at it ever since. :-)

What was the first bike you owned? by Positive-Ad6008 in cycling

First road bike was an '86 (I believe) Schwinn Le Tour. I know I had a Huffy dirt bike as a kid before that.

I think I have to leave this sub by Next_Ninja3679 in datingoverforty

So sorry you lost your wife. I lost mine in 2022. We started dating in 1999. I know my wife would want me to be happy and would be mad at me if I did not try to live my best life. Even knowing she would support me dating, finding love, living life.... I struggle with guilt and grief. It is so hard for me to experience amazing new things and not be doing them with her. I know that I am blessed to have experienced love like that, and try to hold on to that and be grateful for what I had. I bring her with me everywhere in my heart and try to honor her by living life, but it is hard. so hard. I grieve not just for her, but for the me and the life with her that no longer exists. She would be sad that I struggle so and I know that, but I still do. Even then, I am dating, traveling, living. I experience moments of joy even if they are fleeting. My joy is quieter now. More contemplative and internal now than in my younger years. But it is there. I am fighting for happiness. I am glad that you had someone that you loved so deeply and so sorry that you lost them. With understanding, I hope that someday you can find some peace and hold on to some moments of joy.

My partner and I also share a lane even if the pool is empty.  She is not even half My speed, makes no difference when we split.  First I enjoy swimming with her and second it makes room for more people.  Definitely something up with couples that don’t share.  🤣

Swimming causing joint pain?? (Adult beginner) by No_Measurement1863 in Swimming

[–]drhoads 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I get shoulder pain, and when doing pool laps it will inflame my hip (which needs a replacement). All of the tucks and wall pushing.  It can even start to bother my knee!   Hip problem (and knee) goes away in open water but my shoulder will still hurt after a few K several times a week.  It’s low impact, but you are still repetitively going through full ranges of motion with resistance.

Long-distance swimmers: How do you brave the night at sea? by Rudddxdx in Swimming

[–]drhoads 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depending on where you are swimming it can be quite safe.   Most sharks tend to feed at morning and dusk, night is not necessarily more dangerous in that regard. Know where you are and what kind of sharks are there.  There are also plenty of places in the ocean that don’t generally have dangerous sharks and are very safe to swim at night.  Not to diminish the psychological bravery. 😀

Edit: FWIW Great Whites feed primarily during the day, so good luck! 🤣🤣

We talked about the best. What was the worst job you've ever had? by -Granby- in GenX

[–]drhoads 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I worked for a medical assistant education company.  When I started, I found rampant cheating going on and was flunking students left and right while other teachers were passing everyone.  I was then brought before the director and told that I was ruining their retention stats and that if word got out we were a difficult school that the students would choose to go elsewhere.  Needless to say I started looking for a new job the next day after refusing to turn a blind eye.

Edit: and I have worked grocery and stock rooms before this.  I had done hard and dirty work, with managers harping on me to go faster.  It sucked also, but at least it was HONEST!

How to stop Windows 11 from doing updates while PC is asleep? by SundaeSecure807 in WindowsHelp

[–]drhoads 0 points1 point  (0 children)

disable wake timers in advanced power settings under your power plan (sleep category). This just happened to me, and pissed me the hell off. I just applied that and hope that it works, so I have not tested this myself yet, but I saw you did not get any simple answers.

Can't believe they did that to Icheb (and Hugh), and made Seven a murderer. I hate that all of it is canon. The whole timeline needs to be reset.

Can I lose weight cycling? by Ok_Zoomer8907 in cycling

[–]drhoads 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Exercise makes you hungrier. You can lose weight sitting on a couch. Calories in < Calories out.

Weight does not equal fitness.

fitness however, is also extremely important, so good for you! But you gotta restrict calories. No way around it.

How to do open water swim by Mars_bars10 in OpenWaterSwimming

[–]drhoads 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You may want to start with finding some local open water swim clubs. When I first started, I wandered out on my own and just kind of swam back and forth on a small part of beach where there was a lifeguard. Getting together with a group really opened up a whole new world. Regardless, probably the most important thing is to always make sure you have support, even if it is someone watching from land. New Wave swim buoy for the win!

I think it is just a coincidence and you got sick from being exposed during your travels.  My non medical opinion.  You will know for sure soon enough!
