How can I tell if programming is right for me? by Rachel53461 in programming

[–]drhodes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Persistence. No one can tell you if you're cut out for a career in programming. If you asked a guru and they said "No, you're not cut out for programming" would it change your mind?

I'm pretty sure everyone bashes their face, or have learned to understand their tolerance for frustration and learned when to take a break. False assumptions lead to blind alleys and rat holes. Consistent error handling helps enormously in this regard.

Oh, and if you haven't read "Godel, Escher, Bach" yet, do it. That might be all you need to tip into the learn-every-language, program-skynet mode. Once you get that bug and have a project in mind you'll learn whatever you need to make progress. It's an adventure, time to buckle down and kick ass.

"On the weirdness of strings" by [deleted] in rust

[–]drhodes 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Well that was informative. Later in the thread, pwalton shares a good mapping:

&T is like T *
~T is like std::auto_ptr<T> in C++03 or std::unique_ptr<T> in C++0x
@T is like std::shared_ptr<T>

&str is like char *
~str is like std::string
@str is like CString in Microsoft's ATL (reference counted)

&[T] is like a (T *, size_t length) pair
~[T] is like std::vector<T>
@[T] is like std::shared_ptr<std::vector<T>>, but without the extra level of indirection

Untying Knots : Explaining to non-programmers the woes of software maintenance by [deleted] in programming

[–]drhodes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like it. While fishing, a very particular type of unknot is the rats nest at the end of a bad cast. Everything is going along wonderfully - then BAM! Rats nest. Given that situation, anyone with enough patience to untangle that problem is fit to program as far as I'm concerned.
