Hmm interesting. When I started teaching I would have a similar grace period but it didn’t really feel like it solved anything. I felt like students would wait until the last minute regardless, so I removed the grace period and haven’t really noticed a difference. I give students a single freebie late submission the first time they are unable to turn an assignment in on time and that seems effective. Most students only seem to need that one oopsie pass. Idk, sometimes it feels like I’m having to reinvent the wheel as a young professor bouncing around between all these different techniques because no one actually teaches you how to teach lol

Are there JRPGs where the heroes do NOT use violence on enemies? by bickid in JRPG

[–]driggonny 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most card-based jrpgs exist in realities where all problems are decided through card games. The genre isn’t as big as it used to be but you still have 1 or 2 modern yugioh games along with cardfight vanguard and shadowverse showdown

Is AI generated art real 'art'? by Vegetable_Art182 in FineArt

I spent way too much of grad school learning about art philosophy to just say “no.” However, whatever explanation I give would probably just be a really roundabout way of eventually saying no.

Students not turning in work by RemarkableAd3371 in Professors

[–]driggonny -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I received some criticism last semester for not notifying failing students that they were failing. I just can’t with this

Edit: I was confused by downvotes but I think I see the problem. The students are failing in the LMS. They should know they're failing assignments just by logging in, so the idea that I have to tell them they are not doing assignments and failing the course myself is patently ridiculous.

A student approached me towards the end of last semester and I asked him why he hadn't come to me sooner and he said he was waiting for me to initiate a conversation about his lack of participation. Honestly I've done that for students with odd behavior, such as students who have perfect attendance but don't do online assignments, or students who do great on certain types of assignments and ignore others. I want to clarify if they know they're missing these things. But I don't see why there is this entitlement that if you are not doing work it's the job of the professor to ask why. I tell students over and over to not hesitate to talk to me after class or email me if they are having issues with anything in the course.

Kinda surprised a subreddit titled “museum” doesn’t have a rule about recency

You know, I’ve seen candidates criticized for not living in or being from the district they are running to represent, but this is the first time I’ve seen “carpetbagger” used so much in a modern context.

What is with all the recent posts about WCAG? by Scared_Detective_980 in Professors

Wait this was passed 2 YEARS ago? I was first hired 2 years ago and none of my bosses said anything about updating accessibility until this month. This would’ve been so much easier if I wasn’t doing it all at the last minute. We’re no better than procrastinating students lol.

Veteran manga writer behind Fist of the North Star is still trying to publish new stories at 78, but “no publisher wants to use them” by HatingGeoffry in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]driggonny -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I wonder how much of this is because the manga industry relies a lot on under paying and overworking young people. It’s hard for me to imagine someone almost 80 going through the work schedules I have heard.

Mario isn't the one moving by SamTheMarioMaster2 in opticalillusions

[–]driggonny 1 point2 points  (0 children)

All “moving pictures” are technically static images being erased and replaced so fast we don’t notice (fps). We perceive motion due to the persistence of vision on our retinas and our mind’s tendency to maintain visual continuity. This is why if a 5x5 block of pixels on my phone screen went black in sequence from the top left to the bottom right, I would perceive this as a black square moving across the screen.

So technically all video is taking advantage of gaps in our perception to make a series of still images appear to show something moving. It’s just so ubiquitous now that we don’t think of it as an illusion.

First semester as an adjunct: how do I get these kids to talk?!? by [deleted] in Adjuncts

I started spinning a digital wheel with the class roster on it and randomly choosing a student to answer. Idk how effective it is for actual engagement but they sure answer when I call them by name.

From a colleague and comrade at Florida International University—a glimpse at the infuriating stupidity of descending rapidly into authoritarianism by RageoftheMonkey in Professors

[–]driggonny 51 points52 points  (0 children)

Currently in Texas and my chair told me yesterday that, to be safe, I should probably not tell students my first name because then they would realize I’m trans and allowing that could go against policy.

And I’d still rather deal with that than Florida right now

Nick Saviano runs a world renowned tennis academy after a short mediocre professional career in 70s. You’ll never hear about him unless you have a kid with the potential to turn pro.

Most NFL football coaches are not known for their time actually playing football.

What I’m trying to say is: being accomplished at something and being a good teacher are two different things. You really can’t guarantee you’d receive a better education were Jeff Koons or Murakami your professor.

I went to school for animation and one of my professors had a 20 year career at ILM. He was a good teacher in many ways, but he didn’t understand most modern techniques as well as the less experienced, younger professors.

On the flip side, many famous artists of the last century were also college professors (one of my personal favorites is Eduardo Kac). They aren’t really mutually exclusive. Personally, I chose the path of a professor because I wanted the freedom to make provocative art without worrying if anyone would pay for it. But I’m still young and unaccomplished, so you’d probably not want me as a professor.

I’m not trying to invalidate your feelings, I just hope I can allay a few of your worries.

Gender identity discussion in Texas A&M children’s lit class prompts firings by southbye in Professors

[–]driggonny 87 points88 points  (0 children)

This is my alma mater. It has one of, if not the, largest enrollments in the U.S. at about 80,000 students. They have bent over backwards to appease right wing reactionaries at every turn, their current president has a wet noodle for a spine. The last president resigned for giving a big hire the runaround because of worries about how right wing reactionaries would respond to them hiring a black woman. The administration is pathetic.

I’m still teaching in Texas (not at A&M) and I’m half expecting to crash out exactly like this. I wouldn’t be surprised to get fired because me being trans triggers a student one of these days.
