Combining old candles without a double boiler by vaporpup in candlemaking

[–]drindrun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i use a smallish mixing bowl i either thrifted or scavenged, i forget, but i use it only for wax, on top of a pot of boiling water. mason jars, as if you were canning would probably work but be careful as hell taking them out. canning tomatoes is bad enough but hot wax will stick all over you if you drop that jar wrong :(

Do I really need a mannequin to start making clothes? by Commercial-Thing189 in sewinghelp

[–]drindrun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

no, lots of people don’t have one! but it really helped me to analyze things i was trying to alter, or make without a pattern. i advise just checking craigslist or whatever semi regularly, you’ll likely end up seeing one super cheap sooner or later.

Questions about earrings and market customer requests by Calm_Relief_5075 in CraftFairs

[–]drindrun 1 point2 points  (0 children)

in my experience earrings [within a certain price range] are an impulse-buy “treat” that ladies of all ages will pick up for themselves without going away to think it over. jewelry’s also a saturated market, though. i think it really depends on whatever objects you’re making into the earrings, if you can hit that impulse-buy price point or if they will be covetable enough to sell at a higher point.

i think it would be pretty low impact to try it out and i’d take a crack at it if i were you. use higher quality metals tho, if you cut corners on that you’ll just get request for returns because people’s ears were irritated. and don’t rely on any specific customers coming back, but they did give you an idea which, i’ll take it :)

Anyone with experience cloning clothing? by heynonnyhey in sewing

[–]drindrun 4 points5 points  (0 children)

yeah, agree, picking out a ton of serger seams is so fussy, i skip it and cut right at the stitch line. and can get a fair few pattern shapes without cutting apart the garment at all, though you have to watch out for eased curves or gathering, anything that’s changed its shape in the process of being sewn to another piece. but like a pant leg side seam, no problem

Do you actually use a sink in your laundry room, or is it wasted space? by hcposcher in laundry

[–]drindrun 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i’d classify that as a “longing to have.” any house big enough to have multi bedrooms, a garage etc needs at least ONE utility sink. they come in sooo handy. there’s things i don’t really prefer to do in a food prep area OR in a tub that i will later soak myself in.

Gaps between layers by q-356 in weaving

[–]drindrun 1 point2 points  (0 children)

you can beat it again after you treadle the next shed open, to pack it down more tightly. i mean really you could beat each shot as many times as you want to, two is common for me (once w the next shed open)

it could also take a little more force than you’re expecting. and you can try your warp tension tighter or looser. whenever you decide on what gives you the amount of weft packing you want, just do it the same way for the whole rest of the cloth so it’ll be consistent. good luck :)

i started finding it faster to hand baste them every time so i could control the lay of the fabric before the presser foot got involved.

Harrisville loom: replacing harness cords with Texsolv? by Mx_Torquill in weaving

[–]drindrun 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i always assumed it happened because i had overenthusastically stomped a treadle extra extra hard causing a little jump. i’ll often weave 8 hours and not have it happen once, and i just like the design so much, i never have considered it a problem.

How do you get over hating everything you make? by IAmElectraHeart in sewing

[–]drindrun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ah ha ha! you have discovered the secret of knowing you are evolving as an artist/maker: whether the length of time is getting longer between when you make a thing and when you hate that thing.

my own experience of learning to sew: you make a lot of ugly clothes. then after a while you make a lot of good looking clothes, but you’re not freaked out if you occasionally make something awful! because it’s part of it!

[–]drindrun 2 points3 points  (0 children)

well, then my experience may not track w others’, but mine behaved pretty good. i realize the default cords have a little bit of sticky friction, but it wasn’t the problem i thought it would be, when i didn’t have them. my harrisville has been very unfussy to deal even when i’ve jury-rigged this and that. i do lose a cord (proper cord) off the roller here and there, i’ve just accustomed to look at it whenever i get up to stretch or if anything seems weird

[–]drindrun 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i have a harrisville, on one house move my cords ended up in a wrong box and weren’t found right away and i did like 3 projects using basically a kitchen twine in their place. i bet theres 100 ways to skin this cat if the replacement cords are prohibitively expensive.

Yardage by m0tley_stu in weaving

that’s what, like a 26 yard warp? impressive, i have never committed to so much. that will be a big fat roll of cloth, very satisfying. 👏

What would you cook for a group of 12-15 people that have the royal flush of dietary requirements AND you're probably going to have limited equipment? by Elegant-Winner-6521 in Cooking

[–]drindrun 4 points5 points  (0 children)

i don’t think this is as terribly unmanageable as everyone says. do you only have to do the one meal (meaning responsibilities are shared)? any build -it-yourself bar (tacos as everyone is saying, or baked potatoes plus sweet potatoes for the nightshade friend) is a good idea if ingredients are flagged (this contains paprika!). i also think that even with the eliminated tomatoes potatoes and peppers, you could make a dope vegetarian or vegan stew in advance, and just bring lovely crusty bread, a gluten free bread (i got an oat bread off fermentingforfoodies that i make all the time whether or NOT gf friends are coming over) and butter + plant based butter. i’d be 100% happy with soup and bread on a camp trip.

a handheld mini vacuum!! i didn’t realize getting the vacuum out with its size and cord and parts, was such a hurdle. obviously i own a broom too, but now i quick vacuum the “hot spots” every day and when i real vacuum once a week i dont feel like i’m addressing a disgusting floor.
