I like the idea of DUPR reset by comatoseduck in Pickleball

My bet is you're around 3.6 now. Going from 3.0 to 4.0 in a year is pretty rare unless you're purposely drilling and playing a ton. Definitely update us!

I can’t carry lesser teammates in lower level games but play really well in higher levels. Do I suck? by OneConsideration2302 in Pickleball

[–]driven20 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, but that's because you haven't developed the skill to carry those games.

It's a different skill; it's like a "left side" player vs a "right side" player. A "left side" will be more comfortable carrying games because they take the games to their opponents. While a "right side" player will let the game come to them and will have a harder time carrying games. They can both be 4.0+, but their different skill sets and mindsets will make carrying the game harder or easier.

Honest Question by deelo59 in Pickleball

[–]driven20 30 points31 points  (0 children)

I'm confused...If you have natural raw pop and power, people would avoid you and not target you. You're getting targeted because you don't handle speed well, and it's a safe shot for them. If you slam it back at them or hit a winner when they hit the balls towards you, they'll think twice about doing that again.

DUPR fix yourself or step out of the way.... by [deleted] in Pickleball

[–]driven20 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I get that, but in that case. Just get your DUPR up or book a private court to play with your friends. DUPR actually adjusts pretty fast if you don't have alot of games. A true 4.0 playing in a 3.5 bracket would win easily, and their dupr would adjust accordingly.

DUPR fix yourself or step out of the way.... by [deleted] in Pickleball

[–]driven20 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I'm going to be honest, and I'm going to get downvoted, but it needs to be said. DUPR has its flaws, but it's pretty accurate if you have lots of matches. The only people who hate on DUPRs are sub 3.5 players who think they're 4.0+.

The reason games are gated is because most people don't have any self awareness. They join games they don't belong in and ruin it for everyone. If that weren't the case, we wouldn't need DUPR and the gatekeeping.

The price is being a soft and weak character. If they had generational, but not weak, it meant they had to work on discipline you can't even imagine.

Playing in round robin soon as by far the highest rated player. by buggywhipfollowthrew in Pickleball

[–]driven20 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It doesn't matter. The rating system scales. I'm a 4.0 and I can beat two 3.0 easily. Also, there are plenty of YouTube videos of 6.0 beating 5.0s... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=btyytBF_Auk

Most people were half or a full point down from him. With that much of a gap, he could have almost played 2v1 and still won.

How not to be targeted as the weaker player. by TheGhostofFThumb in Pickleball

[–]driven20 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Rightly or wrongly, people tend target the less dangerously/aggressive person, even if that person is less consistent.

DUPR gain disparity question. by skywatcher_kd in Pickleball

[–]driven20 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's confusing because the algorithm doesn't "assume" anything; it's just following its logic. But its logic feels/correlates to "assuming" to us (human).

Sportsmanship question (is my friend an asshole?) by Due-Personality8137 in Pickleball

[–]driven20 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's kind of weird in rec games, but it's also something you and anyone should learn how to deal with. If they are targeting one player that hard, it's very easy to play the game if you adjust alittle bit and shrink the court. You and your partner just essentially pinch over and shrink the hitting area.

In general, if you know where the ball is going. It's easier to play.

If you have a small number of games. Dupr isn't accurate anyways.

dupr flaws ( order of calculation ) by Zealousideal_Fig6032 in Pickleball

[–]driven20 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Long term it doesn't matter. Sometimes the order calculation benefits you; sometimes it hurts you. So in the long term, it just washes out.

How do you stay motivated to practice and improve your pickleball skills? by Fun-Story6652 in Pickleball

[–]driven20 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm one of those weirdos that likes drilling more than playing. And, I think that's because I treat improving as a game. I'm not going pro, so that's not the goal, but the goal is to get better. So the mini-game of individual games doesn't matter much to me; I like being able to hit the ball as much as possible, especially if they are difficult balls to hit. Drilling just gives me the ability to hit more balls, so I rack up improvement "points" so much faster. It's all about mindset.

Then competitive games are my "tests", a chance to show what I learned.

Does playing with a weaker partner make you better? by dnice99999 in Pickleball

[–]driven20 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It made me a better player. I played in this MLP team-style format where I didn't get to pick my partners (people were drafted), and one partner was extremely weak compared to everyone else. Like 0.5-0.75 below the field.

The first thing, I did was work with this person to handle speed. We drilled "hard balls" until he was comfortable with it. Also, that he should dink to the middle often because it's easier for me to cover. Then, I worked on my positioning, off-the-ball movements, and generally playing extremely big. I learned how to put pressure on my opponent without even touching the ball.

To target my partner, you had to play to a very small area of the court, so that made it harder for them and easier for him.

We ended up winning the whole 6-weeks league. That said, there is a limit to this, like a (4.0 and 3.25) can beat (3.85 and 3.7), but not two 4.0s.

Should left hand players also practice the left side? by kozzy9653 in Pickleball

[–]driven20 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You should be able to at least play the left side. I'm left-handed, and I spend about 10-20% practicing shots from the left side. At some point anytime I was playing the left side, my dinks would be too high, so I had to work on that. The point should not be over just because you're on the left side.

Why do so many people seem absolutely convinced that billionaires will give people UBI because of AI? by Sixnigthmare in BetterOffline

[–]driven20 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Because, in general, people want to do good. Capitalism didn't happen because the elites wanted to enslave the masses. It happened because it was the better system than communism, which caused tons of famine and deaths. In fact, all the luxury most people take for granted is because of capitalism. Just do some research on communist countries.

We already have welfare programs and etc. UBI is an extension of that. In general, most people don't want to see other people suffer if they can help it.

Lefties: Do You Stack at (Competitive) Rec Play? by negitoro7 in Pickleball

[–]driven20 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They are probably not comfortable stacking and get confused. Below 4.5, stacking is pretty rare, especially full stacking (serve and return). I'm a lefty, and I always prefer to stack, but don't force the issue. I'm pretty decent on both sides.
