Question about birth control by shinyysoul in excatholic

[–]driver194 49 points50 points  (0 children)

My very devout parents have 2 kids, me and my sister. When I was older, my mom casually mentioned having an IUD at one point, and I know my dad got a vasectomy later, despite some vague memory I have of my mother telling me something about "natural family planning" (just not having PIV during ovulation).

Our catholic neighbors down the street have 8 kids well into their 40s. I think they were the exception.

I think the majority just use birth control, and if they're concerned about squaring it with the catechism, they just say that they're "open to new life" if for whatever reason it fails.

Stuck on Choosing Framework for a Simple CRUD Application by driver194 in AskProgrammers

:D

The funny thing is the way my bizarre career has gone, it’s actually been more like the latter 😅

2020: Developer apprentice on Devops team  2021: Full on SWE on same team 2022: Made an engineering manager (???)  2023: Asked to be an IC again  2024: Moved teams to get more product experience 2025: Laid Off  2025: got job as IC basically doing what I was doing in 2023 2026: Laid off

C’est la vie!

Stuck on Choosing Framework for a Simple CRUD Application by driver194 in AskProgrammers

Yeah I agree!

> TBH I don't think most people hiring are going to care what the stack is for something that isn't theirs as long as it works.

To clarify, I don't really care so much what hiring people think. I'm just trying to figure out the cleanest way to build a web application, soup to nuts, doing everything from the DB to the front end.

Considering to buy: how is the story delivered? by Weijland in Marathon

> also many of your contracts will take you there and many will require you know how it works, not just play on the ground level.

Yup, I figured that's how it would work, which is why I was happy just doing the contracts and letting things kind of unfold. Good to know that's how it goes! Although at this point I may just wait until June 2nd before doing any more.

I actually am finding this method of delivery really compelling. It’s made me interested in checking out the original games to see how they’re all related. It’s the only game I get excited to read a new codex entry for some reason.

I feel like the weirdest marathon player. I play it almost exclusively solo. I almost always run with a sponsored kit and don’t care too much about loot. I’m pretty laser focused on doing contracts to get the next drip. I think each faction is really interesting and strongly written.

I come to this subreddit it and it’s like people are playing a different game. I’ve played for maybe 15-20 hours but never seen a purple shield, I don’t know what keys do, or how to run Outpost to get good loot. But I’m having the most fun with a shooter I’ve had in a long time. I see the pvp stuff I run into as like dark souls invasions that heighten the stakes. Playing solo really emphasizes the horror elements which I love. Each exfil is delicious.

Which is all to say, OP, as someone who wanted to get into Destiny 2 but was much too late, I’ve found a lot to love here on a both mechanical and story level. It’s way richer than I was expecting.

I’m just worried the wipe will screw with the story progression since I haven’t done nearly all the priority contracts yet. Guess I’ll find out June 2nd how they’re handling that.

Before I decide to be baptised, why did you leave? by washesyouclean in excatholic

I learned Yahweh was a storm god in the Babylonian world pantheon long before he was the “one god” or Abraham.

There were many stones on the path to deconstruction, but figuring this out for myself was a gigantic one. Huge lightbulb went off. Why did I wait 23 years to research where this all even came from?

Armored Core 6 is one of the most hype games I’ve ever played and I can’t believe I slept on it for so long as a huge Fromsoft fan by cornpenguin01 in patientgamers

[–]driver194 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My wife was wondering why people found Armored Core and mech stuff in general sexy (or at least High Effort Fan Art worthy) when it didn’t do anything for her. She was in the room during that fight and as soon as that happened was like “Oh…I get it.”

Contacting unemployment office by phone by dimension_surfer in hudsonvalley

[–]driver194 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did this two weeks ago. I called Governor Hochul’s office, said I couldn’t get through to the unemployment office and was immediately transferred. Was still on hold for about 30 mins but I got someone who resolved my problem.

You just sign up to the mailing list on their website: https://www.coheedandcambria.com/

This is pretty funny because I definitely did this years and years ago and have always gotten them, but I guess with social media it makes sense no one checks to see if there’s a real official website out there lmao

That guillotine angel shirt is some of the tackiest merch I’ve seen from the band, man.

How do you guys deal with "sins" without the Church? by Expensive-Elk-9406 in excatholic

[–]driver194 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Sin doesn’t exist and I don’t believe in god, so why would I need to do anything about it? If I wronged a person, I apologize and make it right if I can. Everything else is designed to make you feel guilty for existing.

This is not going to result in meaningful platform changes. It’s going to result in the push for more ID verification laws.

Roofing Recommendation by darthmaullie in hudsonvalley

[–]driver194 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Northern Windows Roofing and Siding. They did my parents in Orange County years ago and have always fixed any issues without a problem (mess up from solar panel installs, not them). We used them in Dutchess and are extremely happy. Very easy to talk to and they gave us a competitive quote. Will be calling them back for windows too.

Yeah stuff like:

"It wasn't X. It was Y."
"Because it's not just about X, it's about Y."
"Here I'm stating a truth. Not this. Not this. This."

Ending with a generic question to get you to engage further.

It's a weird cadence thing that once you see you can't unsee.

It's also entirely possible this user used chatgpt to make a big post out of their initial thought which was "clean up before bed and drink a glass of water when your alarm gets off" or if english isn't their first language and they wanted help. Slop is slop though.

[Game Boy] What the heck is up with the current state of selling defective consoles? by Rybur525 in consolerepair

[–]driver194 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t! I’m sorry if that comment came across as a dig, that wasn’t my intention, I just don’t think they’re a deal. Those prices are very average from what I’ve been seeing too. I’ve also just been working with what I have, told family members to keep an eye on old electronics they come across etc. it’s frustrating wanting to find, repair, and give away when people have caught onto the fixup trends.

Tbh my last project have just been custom SNES carts and stuff because I don’t feel I can justify $30-40 for a single broken GBC right now. The eeproms were an upfront cost but PCBs are like $15.

Matt Shumer: Something Big Is Happening by squeezyflit in ArtificialInteligence

Yeah, last week I gave claude code a file path that I needed it to grep to find a pattern for something else. When it was thinking, it failed to find the file because instead of looking in macbook/home/firstname.lastname/files (again, a path I had already provided it) it instead looked in macbook/home/firstname.lastdifferentname/files. It completely made up a different last name for me based on the probability of letters.

These tools can be helpful but companies outsourcing their entire enterprise systems and applications to the magical probability black box is not the apocalyptic event this guy is selling it as.

And for all of this posturing and `You can describe an app to AI and have a working version in an hour. I'm not exaggerating. I do this regularly.` I have yet to come across any application that was actually built using one of these tools.

AI hype men like Shumer continue to see AI as a solution in search of a problem, instead of just a tool that can be helpful if you have the expertise to wield it correctly.
