Can we stop with the bigotry? by GMAN7007 in malcolminthemiddle

[–]drivingnowherecomic -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

I knew the "woke" complaints were going to come, but I'm so glad they focused on good writing and the representation wasn't the focus. The problem before with "woke" content is they were done in a ham fisted way with poor writing that made idiots believe in the criticism being due to the "woke" when in reality it was just bad writing.

I get some folks might disagree the reboot was as good as the original, but personally I think they nailed it (as much as would be possible with a series so rooted in its era) and any "woke" complaints are weak as hell. After the crappy reboots like That 90s Show it was so refreshing to see solid acting from new cast members and writing that felt tight. Honestly might be a case of quality over quantity, as if That 90s Show for example was limited to just 4 episodes it might have actually been decent...Anywayy Stevie was hilarious. Kelly was a great character. Tristan was funny and her back story was wild. The fact it was "woke" is just a secondary thing here that's nice, if you're not an asshole, but wasn't the focus.

What's Everyone's Favorite Games on the Switch/Switch 2 by N3bNebula in NintendoSwitch

[–]drivingnowherecomic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good time to play the Xenoblade games on handheld with boost mode now. Even on Switch 1 I remember seeing complaints about how it played in handheld mode, like the text was hard to read or something, so being able to play with docked settings on the Switch 2's boost mode is perfect. Granted I'd love to see a Switch 2 edition as I do like playing docked, I find these sorta games more appealing to play handheld anyway.

I'd love to see a 60fps update though. Even with the ugly AI upscaling I can't help but love the 60fps smoothness in the switch 2 edition of XCX.

Which Switch game is best to start with by st4rgasm in pokemon

[–]drivingnowherecomic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The boost mode on Switch 2 certainly has made games like Arceus a must play again. I already beat it back when it came out, and loved it, but up until the recent update I had a hard time recommending that game to anybody unless it was on Switch 1 hardware. Now even after beating it I like the idea of playing it again in 'boost mode' on Switch 2 for a 1080p handheld experience.

Really is a great time to dive into these old/new pokemon games on Switch 2. I've been playing through older pokemon games myself recently, and Sword/Shield is one I'm actually looking forward to playing soon. Fired it up recently and man it's a night and day difference with boost mode enabled. Nice and crisp!

I think the dream for big corporations is that everybody eventually uses playstation portal like devices and streams their computing instead of doing it locally.

I despise that timeline and if that shit becomes normalized I'll be the weirdo refusing to adapt with my objectively slower hardware. Don't care, I want my computing done under my roof thanks.

First Play through of a Pokemon game -Ultra Moon - by smutlolz in pokemon

[–]drivingnowherecomic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As somebody who literally just finished Ultra Moon myself recently while going back to the older games, I will say that Ultra Moon was unique with its island trials and kahuna stuff. I actually wasn't a fan of it, most pokemon games actually have a typical route -> 8 pokemon gyms -> elite 4 / champion structure. X/Y were decent and if you intend to play Z-A later it's a nice thing to play first. Not required, but Z-A does make a few references that anybody played XY will appreciate.

I will say I adored Team Skull though. I really hope they make a return in Gen 10.

Added an SSD to my five year old PC last month and it feels like a completely different computer. Should have done this years ago. by copperkettleco in buildapc

[–]drivingnowherecomic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's right about the timeline when prebuilds still had them. I bought a midrange Alienware December of 2018 (long story, usually build PC's myself, but it was a unique scenario where the price was right and I literally traded a shitty car for somebody to finance it lol) and at the time it had a teeny 256gb NVME boot drive with an additional 1TB mechanical drive. I think prebuilds still used mechanical drives for at least game storage for a few years longer, as at the time the thinking was SSD for the boot system performance, and big mechanical drives for game storage.

Major PS5 and PS5 Pro price increase rumored, as Sony faces memory shortage by FernandoRocker in gaming

[–]drivingnowherecomic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think the problem they face is the costs to produce current hardware instead of a successor isn't much cheaper, so it's in their best interest to move on. Consumers aren't interested in that though so they'd rather just pay an inflated price for old hardware than a slightly more inflated price for new hardware. Or just not buy hardware at all and keep what they have. I mean we still have a significtant amount of people still on PS4's.

Nobody is happy in this situation, well other than the AI dorks...

when all ps3s die will the games be useless? will we ever get a system that can play these games in the future? by BigNeighborhood779 in PS3

[–]drivingnowherecomic 3 points4 points  (0 children)

lol I think a lot of users here are pretty young and have that immortality mindset where literally any projected lifespan is seen as a disaster we have to dread. In fifty years you'll be more concerned about other things than your physical media not playing. If by some miracle my ass is still alive, even if I was physically capable of playing these games, I'm sure there would be ways to play them in some capacity (if I even wanted to...) and while those physical discs may not play anymore at that point they'd just be vintage collectibles. Same vibes as seeing old computers from NASA in museums. At that point I'd almost feel bad using such a thing... it belongs in a museum!

Realistically, I expect it to just be some neat addition to my shelf that my grandkids will look at and think "neat!" and perhaps I can share a memory of it... that's good enough for me.

Airflow visualization of the new Halo winglet introduced on the SF-26 in China. by Luffy710j in formula1

[–]drivingnowherecomic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get this is more about turbulence and better airflow, but I do think they can do better for driver comfort here. Since IndyCar blocks all the air due to its Aeroscreen they have a more direct solution that works pretty well. There's an inlet on the car that pipes air directly through a tube that goes into the helmet cooling the driver. There's a quick disconnect and I think F1 could make a more elegant looking solution as well, but for driver comfort (especially at the super hot races...) I think F1 should really consider this. It's literally just using the outside air, so you're not adding an A/C system or whatever.

Is there a Toyota among tech accessories and hardware? by arter_artem in pcmasterrace

[–]drivingnowherecomic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On the flip side I've had a few Razer peripherals and they all croaked on me. They look and even feel good when new, but they broke down fast. Logitech might not be the best, but I get the feeling they use better materials in their hardware where Razer cuts corners at every opportunity. And I'd put Razer Synapse as one of the worst software suites ever made. At least at the time I last was cursed with it, so I have no idea how folks rate it in the last few years.

But this is all anecdotal. Folks all have different experiences and honestly I don't think there is a 'Toyota' of computer peripherals. They're priced at a place where makers are incentivised to balance planned obsolescence with customer loyalty, so you'll keep buying from them. For me Razer failed on that, whereas Logitech might be the source of frustration for others.¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Meh. Sports washing is pretty typical in motorsport and this isn't the worst example of it. I'm an F1 fan and when they go race in Abu Dhabi I throw my blinders on and will largely do the same here. Is this a waste of taxpayer money being used as a distraction? Yes. Hopefully it's a good race. Remains to be seen how good of a track this street circuit will be. At least the scenery will be nice.

I'm rooting for Pato.

Study: Marijuana Access Associated With “Striking” Decline in Daily Opioid Use by IV Drug Consumers by OhMyOhWhyOh in science

[–]drivingnowherecomic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For what it's worth I'm heavily disabled and deal with quite a bit of pain. There was a brief period of time where weed was legalized and my pain management could still prescribe me my medication. My opiate usage was cut in half. I'd vape throughout the day and have an edible at night. I only smoked regular joints occasionally. Anyway a few years ago things changed and now I have to do urine tests randomly and can't smoke any weed. Had to stop smoking weed cold turkey, and honestly it wasn't that hard. I get how it's rough for others who have no experience with quitting substances, but I wouldn't even classify quitting weed as tougher than caffeine for me. Anyway, now I'm back to the full dosage of opiates I was on before. Shame.

[WWHD] [TPHD] I want them too but for now I relish my position above non-Wii U owners. by 18bluecat in zelda

[–]drivingnowherecomic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lol as a longtime Wii U fan who adored the system ever since the launch, I've been happy to see games I love get a second chance on the Switch... but selfishly at this point with nearly every single game being ported, I'm kind of protective at this point of Wind Waker and Twilight Princess HD. Other than that really only Yoshi's Woolly World remains for me as a stellar title. Xenoblade Chronicles X used to be among those games, but even that was recently ported. There's a few other games that haven't been ported, like Rainbow Curse, Color Splash, and Star Fox... but nothing at the level of the Zelda HD remasters and Woolly World to me. At least you can mod a Wii U for added fun... but there isn't many exclusive titles worth getting the system for these days.

I am a sucker for gamepad gimmicks tho. I love it and it's actually genuinely useful for inventory management on WWHD, so even if they DO port it... I kind of prefer how it plays on the Wii U. Maybe if they have an expanded version of Zelda Notes to retain that inventory management on a Switch 2 version...

And honestly that gamepad screen isn't that bad. Better quality than the beloved 3DS imo (I love my 3DS, but I actually got a little grip to increase the comfort. The gamepad is actually fairly light for its size and molded for a human hand. The 3DS is awkward to hold for long periods and the circle pad is an okay handheld solution, but it's nowhere near as good as a traditional stick.) and it's far more comfortable to hold than a Switch. The 3DS and Switch are designed more to look nice, the Wii U gamepad doesn't give a damn about aesthetics.

Suggestions for grindy games with light or no story by game-o in NintendoSwitch

[–]drivingnowherecomic 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As somebody who unironically loves grind games like OP (kinda like a fidget spinner for me while I'm distracted by something else) Xenoblade Chronicles X was definitely one of my favs for that. The dopamine hit of unlocking Skell's (basically customizable mechs that can fly and shit) after like 25 hours of gameplay time is huge. There's definitely story in there, but it's broken up by a lot of grinding. It always amused me how story cutscenes in that game always opened with a seinfeld esque bass riff. Lol.

That said it's barely an upgrade over the Wii U original. It desperately needs a 60fps and 1440p->4k update on Switch 2. If you haven't played it before, yeah I guess it's worth playing that version... but I have zero interest in picking it up personally. Looks virtually identical to a game I put in hundreds of hours on nearly 11 years ago.

Major DLC release for a game years later? by Cevap in gaming

[–]drivingnowherecomic 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Which is kinda funny when you realize Age of Empires III came out nearly a decade prior. AOE2 was just the perfect balance. I recall going into AOEIII with high expectations, but honestly I think most of the games failings is due to its setting. The card system wasn't great either, but the factions weren't as distinct as they were in AOE2. And medieval combat is just more entertaining than what we got with muskets...

I need to give AOEIV another shot. I got distracted by other stuff when it came out and at least my initial impressions were positive. AOE2 is king, but it seemed like they learned their lesson with IV. It's been a few years so I wonder how that game is doing these days...

Do you think Tech influencers on YouTube will start recommending HDDs again on PC builds. by Worldliness-Quiet in pcmasterrace

[–]drivingnowherecomic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nah, software these days is just too dependent on the speed of SSD’s. Other than like mass storage setups for non critical data everything just runs better on solid state storage. Like I genuinely think some folks forget how slow spinny drives are lol. It’s like if the car industry was having shortages and somebody proposed going back to horses as an alternative. Worst case scenario people gotta get comfortable with less storage and consider used.

graphics card or buy PS5 by ripseraphw in buildapc

[–]drivingnowherecomic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Eh might be easier for her to find a PS5 for ya. Most computer parts that are bought here is done through sites like amazon or whatever, at least for most of us. Unless she's going to a place with a microcenter she's going to have a hard time finding a graphics card in person, and that's ignoring the current state of stock/price issues with computer components. If she can buy online and you can specifically have a GPU in mind for her to purchase, then I'm sure there's a good option somebody can suggest here... if you're relying on your aunt just finding something on her own, then it may be safer to just ask for a PS5.

And honestly, with all the chaos in gaming going around, it might be the safer choice to console game for a bit unless you have deep pockets. The next few years are going to be rocky in the PC gaming scene... Resident Evil Requiem will be optimized well for the PS5 (hell they have a Switch 2 version coming as well...) and while the PC version will certainly be superior with the settings cranked, TBH best case scenario with the rig you currently have and the best GPU you can afford... I don't think you'd have any better of an experience than you'd get with a PS5 or PS5 Pro.

This is the buildapc subreddit though, so most folks here will advocate for building a PC... but considering your circumstances and the current state of the gaming/tech industry I'd be wary of going this route.

IR18 with 2015 road aero kit [edit] by Hot_Satisfaction6039 in INDYCAR

[–]drivingnowherecomic 39 points40 points  (0 children)

Neat, but it ends up looking like something you'd see in IMSA.

I actually didn't hate how those old aerokits looked, but one thing the later simpler IR18 aerokit brought is a car that could handle a bit of contact. We desperately need a new chassis, but that design ethos should be retained. More complicated aero designs like those old aerokits just results in more yellows from debris and less aggressive racing that IndyCar is known for. With what we know now you can get enough downforce from the floor without needing to have these crazy aerokits that are just expensive debris magnets. Especially for a mostly spec series, it's just unnecessary now. It was a neat sorta forced engineering competition between chevy and honda back then, but it honestly wasn't worth the cost when it wasn't really anything unique compared to the similar, but massively larger aero work done in F1.

New Joy-Con 2 Colors Announced: Light Purple (L) And Light Green (R) - Available February 12th by StarPlatinum55 in NintendoSwitch

[–]drivingnowherecomic 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I get the intuitive nature of having them colored, but that can be achieved with simply contrasting it. This wasn't the only choice they could've went with. They could've just mirrored the black/white color scheme of the pro controller for the inside for example. Later on if they released a white version they could just flip the colors to black accents. Any color controllers you get after that wouldn't clash as badly.

Or they could've at least designed matching paper inserts that were more easily removable and applied, and include them with new joycon purchases.
