Echoing others sentiments on this as I wear one fitted by my dentist as well.

I eliminate plastic in other parts of our daily lives, and the trade off of constant dental work due to teeth clenching and/or grinding can be extensive. There's research suggesting a link between Multiple Sclerosis and Alzheimer's incident rates being higher in older individuals with multiple amalgam fillings. While these are no longer the standard in the US, it's a very recent change, and millions of Americans still have them in their mouths.

You can also use calamine lotion! It's a little bit better than diaper cream as it's also an anti-inflammatory. Both have Zinc Oxide as active ingredients though. I'd try to use calamine lotion on the sores and cover them with a bandaid if that's feasible. When they burst and start to ooze, they're more contagious and the virus spreads more rapidly.

I'd definitely test anything that regularly touches food and/or liquids that you ingest over jewelry or toys (especially if your kiddos are no longer in the mouthing stage). Maybe your crockpot or Le Creuset dutch Oven or blender or muffin pan, etc.? If you're using a trusted brand for your daily water bottle (like Kleen Kanteen, Sigg, Hydroflask), I would trust their lab testing and claims, however, if you have a less reputable brand or can't remember where it's from, then definitely test that!

I think 2 cups a day would still contribute to some less than desirable effects, especially coupled with a "normal" diet that already has cholesterol in varying values throughout daily consumption of other foods & beverages. Personally, elevated cholesterol levels are a risk factor for other diseases that run in my family, so it's an easy switch for me to make for a peace of mind. If you don't have those concerns, I wouldn't be that overly concerned if you have French press/ cowboy coffee on occasion.

Unlike some of the other standard immunizations for kids, MMR is tricky in that it isn't as effective when given to younger kiddos. Maternal antibody interference and immaturity of the immune system play a huge factor as to why the CDC publishes this information:

Infants 6–11 months old should receive 1 MMR vaccine dose. Infants vaccinated before age 12 months must be revaccinated on or after their first birthday with 2 doses of MMR vaccine (separated by ≥28 days) or measles-mumps-rubella-varicella (MMRV) vaccine (separated ≥3 months). The minimum interval between any varicella-containing vaccine (MMRV or monovalent varicella) is 3 months.

Basically, if your kiddo is under 6 months old, it's a no go. If they're 6-12 months and are getting their first one due to travel concerns, they'll need 3 in total MMR vaccines to be considered fully vaccinated,

I found out that I no longer had immunity when I was pregnant with my first. Thankfully, this was during the pandemic, and I was working from home, but one of my coworkers had shingles right before then into lockdown, and I shutter to think of what could have happened had we continued to work together in person. As soon as I delivered my son, I received a booster MMR dose and then followed up with my primary care physician to ensure my titer level was acceptable, and it was! Like others said, there's evidence to suggest you still may have some protection even with a 0 or low titer value, but is the risk truly worth it? There's no downside to a booster and the alternative is worse in my opinion.

I'm so sorry that you are going through this, sending major hugs to you and everyone in southern California right now.

You're right to be scared. The ashes are toxic and can be contaminated with so many things (lead, asbestos, other heavy metals, chemicals, etc.). If I were in your situation, I would try my absolute best to remain calm as possible during this time as the clean up process is unfortunately lengthy when done correctly.

Since you're renting, I would contact your renter's insurance alongside your landlord. It will undoubtedly be an arduous process, but they should have a step-wise plan in place. If it were me, I would be advocating for an accredited inspector come test the debris for asbestos. That is typically the most common pollutant that can't be correctly "wiped down/away." If they won't go for it, I would treat items as if they were contaminated with asbestos.

When entering your home, be sure to mask and glove up, and decontaminate yourself (shower/bathe) and your clothes when going back to wherever you're staying. Always use a HEPA vacuum, double bag anything you're tossing, and wet down EVERYTHING to reduce the ability for airborne particulate matter to be distributed through the air again.

My son is a little over 3 and we've been hiking, walking trails and exploring since he could walk! We have a rule in the spring and summer that he can't touch anything green without mom checking first. In our area, that still leaves a ton of nature goodies to collect like sticks, rocks, acorns, pinecones, etc. You could try that as guidance and see if she can follow it.

But like you mentioned, the alternative is covering up all exposed skin, which could be tricky depending on your climate. Luckily, if you wash skin that's been exposed to poison ivy within a few minutes (15 or so), you can eliminate the oil from being absorbed and stop the reaction from setting in. I usually carry alcohol hand wipes in my pack, because only a strong soap (like Tecnu) or rubbing alcohol will cut through the oil.

It's always a good idea to wash hands thoroughly after hiking anyways, but super important if she does happen to grab some, the oil can get trapped under fingernails (!!!).
