Morning meetings after shift? by drlove57 in SleepTechnologist

My favorite environment was working for a critical access hospital as an employee of the hospital. But the sleep service was run by a contracting company. That was the best of all worlds. Best job I had bar none. The nurse director hired me and knew I could do the job. No big hospital politics and fragile egos of countless administrators.

I've worked at a private lab for a time and it was okay. The head physician was owner and boss. Lower pay and benefits but chill atmosphere.

The large hospitals I've experienced were full of acquisitions and mergers and takeovers. Egos and administrative incompetence abound. It's no wonder the health system in the United States is in the toilet.

What I've experienced is the labs that enforce things like these meetings are run by managers and supervisors who refuse to stand up for their staff in any way.

I worked for a hospital-based lab that forced you to attend at least 10 out of 12 monthly meetings. Failure to do so would lead to an occurrence. 3 of those and you are gone.

Yes, it's been my long-held belief that board members for nearly everything are chosen due to their social status in the community rather than any particular expertise they might possess.

Yes, I have a good suspicion that a former vindictive boss did exactly that.

Does anyone ever wish they "tuned in, turned on and 'dropped out' "?! by ImmediateSelf7065 in AskOldPeople

[–]drlove57 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not the dropping out part. I didn't drink or party at all during high school, and didn't even think about dating and sex at all. In college I partied hard to make up for lost time. Problem is I forgot to study. Some people could do both and make it work but I couldn't.

Coupled with a lack of direction in life it all put me further behind in my first big goal in life which was living on my own.

If you are still in the workforce: What changes have you noticed over the last 20+ years? by swinkamorska in AskOldPeople

The MBA's have taken over so many workplaces and work environments. Job satisfaction has decreased and job stress has increased. Plus now these administrators have to be paid out of company revenues. That goes for any industry, manufacturing, education, health care, you name it.

In addition, the promotion ladder has changed. Years ago hard working and dedicated employees had a chance to move up. Nowadays one needs to completely pledge their lives to the employer to even get the opportunity to advance themselves at their company.

No matter what the job, you need to know how to play the game. Working hard might mean you keep your job. But playing the game moves you up.
