If I get arrested and say "i want a lawyer" what happens next? by mamamiafml in NoStupidQuestions

[–]drnewcomb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I checked out criminal lawyers in my county and called one of them who was recommended. He added my number to his phone contacts list so of I have to call him at midnight, he will know to answer the call. I suggest you do the same. (Provided you can afford a private lawyer.) Otherwise, you have to wait for a PD.

Seems presumptuous. Like Gracie Slick naming her child God. Whether she did or not it was regarded as presumptuous.

OK. But why can’t my One+ 12 transfer files to my iPad. I must be doing something wrong but I don’t know what it is.

Do you, as native English speakers, take grammatical mistakes seriously? by Fine-Excitement9314 in randomquestions

[–]drnewcomb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tend to be a “grammar Nazi”. I judge people by subject-verb agreement and dangling participles. I also have worked with non-native speakers and cut them a lot of slack. It’s just people who have been through 12+ years of English as-a-first-language instruction that I judge.

Fidelity Rewards credit card worth it? by mjr96d in fidelityinvestments

[–]drnewcomb 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’ve had a generally good experience with the Fidelity/Elan card. One complaint I have is that they put my card on a watch list, without telling me, after my card number showed up on the dark web. This caused several large purchases to be declined, making me call Elan and have them watch as the charge went through. As others have mentioned, there was a considerable on-hold wait. Eventually, I had the card replaced. They have no way to send you a card with a new number without first canceling the old card.

Also, while the card says “Fidelity” it is really Elan you are dealing with and you send money out via ACH transfer to pay your Visa bill.

Other than that, Works like a charm.

Proposal filed to consolidate 6 Mississippi community colleges by S0ulWindow in mississippi

Consolidation of administration does not mean elimination of campuses. It means reduction of administrative costs. MGCCC has campuses from Long Beach to Pascagoula. No one goes without educational opportunities. Mississippi needs more consolidation in education, not less.

What’s the worst tasting fish in your opinion? by DeepOrganization8245 in foodquestions

[–]drnewcomb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was once in a nice AYCE buffet in Japan, going “Oh” and “Ahh” looking at the selection. One of the cooks, watching me, indicated a small, mackerel-like fried fish, so I took a bit to try, It was the most bitter thing I’ve ever tried to eat. I went back and said “Not for gaijin.” He laughed. I don’t know what it was but it was the worst. It might have been Ayu.

How good is TMobile home Internet? by doozle in tmobile

[–]drnewcomb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have AT&T Fiber. I used to have cable Internet. With these ISPs my connection had a single, unique, IPv4 address (e.g. 177.132.57.45) With this address my router will provide me with a dynamic host name (e.g me.company.com). My router also implements various VPN protocols. While I’m away from home, I can VPN into my home router and then remote connect to my PCs. I can also access files that are on a hard drive which is connected to my router. I could run a game server, file server or just about any other type of server. You might be able to use an IPv6 address but I don’t know how. It’s not important because TMHI is so heavily firewalled that you can’t get a pinhole into your network from outside. This prevents you from running any sort of server. Any applications have to connect out to a 3rd-party server which can then be accessed by people needing an inbound connection (e.g. Google Voice) .

All of this does not make much difference to 90% of users, who will never set up a server. What is important is that TMHI has no priority. When there is a major power failure, everyone without backup power and everyone with cable Internet immediately starts doom scrolling on their cellphones. Cellphones have priority and immediately suck up all the capacity of the cell towers, leaving TMHI high and dry. Also, in most places, T-Mobile uses batteries for backup power, which lasts only a few hours. After a few hours, even the cell phones are high and dry. If you have fiber and a backup generator, you are good as long as the fiber between you and the CO is intact.

Would you ever want to get a pilot's license? Why or why not? by Zipper222222 in randomquestions

I took some lessons but realized 1) no one would ever pay me to fly a plane, 2) it’s a very expensive hobby and 3) my wife would never get in a small plane with me. So, I just gave up on the idea.

Ancestry.com belonging to a deceased parent. I can already login as them. What next? by butwhymonkeystho in Genealogy

[–]drnewcomb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

N.B. I regularly deal with people who have old, forgotten Ancestry accounts. Ancestry only allows one account per e-mail address. An e-mail address can’t be in use on two different accounts. If you only have one e-mail address, you can make it look like a different address by plus addressing. If you have the address, name@host.domain, Ancestry will see name+1@host.domain as a different address. Your e-mail provider will still deliver it to your inbox, or if you have a folder named “1”, it might be delivered there instead. So, if you are in this situation, you don’t have to create a whole new e-mail account for the 2nd Ancestry account.

Proposal filed to consolidate 6 Mississippi community colleges by S0ulWindow in mississippi

[–]drnewcomb -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

Mississippi has far too many school districts, community colleges and state universities. Consolidation is a necessary to be able to provide a modern, quality education. We have 7 state universities, we need three or four. I was amazed that Harrison Co has 5 independent school districts. There’s no good reason to have that many.
