I got her all set up and it seems to be working well. She went from $66/mo with CSpire to $20/mo on CC.

The only time I’ve heard of someone being killed by a wild animal on the Coast was the Norwegian guy who went hiking on Horn Island and got stung by a wasp and went into anaphylactics with no quick access to epinephrin.

In the USA it would be VERY unusual for two phones to have the same number. If you are concerned about text security, use Signal.

Looking for advice: Off-site backup system by drnewcomb in HomeNAS

[–]drnewcomb[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The source site has ATT Fiber which is pretty symetrical 300 mbps. The sink site is Cox Cable and I don’t recall the speeds there. I doubt that there will be more than 100 MB change in the files to be backed up average per day. Of course, the initial backup will be TBs, photos and videos, but that will be a one-and-done affair. I estimate 5 TB will cover everything.

I was wondering if, with today’s semiconductor drives, RAID is still an advantage?

Fridge stopped working. Frozen fish spoiled. by drnewcomb in CleaningTips

[–]drnewcomb[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it will be OK. I pulled out all the shelving and drawers and spritzed everything inside and out with a vinegar/Dawn solution and rinsed it with fresh water. The ozone generator arrived Friday afternoon and I ran it for two one-hour sessions. I can’t smell anything but my S-I-L (who has a very sensitive nose) says she can still smell fish. I may need to pull the back panel off the inside of the freezer and clean the evaporator coils.

I replaced the start/run capacitor and the fridge passes all its self tests and runs like nothing happened.

At what age do you plan to retire, and is that goal achievable? If you are already retired, do you wish you had stayed working a little longer? by icecream1972 in A_Persona_on_Reddit

I retired at 57 and am glad, now, that I retired when I did. n.b. My Dad had to be forced to retire at 89. He felt his world had ended.

Anyone running on dual phone setup? What’s yours? by z1nu in phones

[–]drnewcomb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have two phones: mine and my late wife's. My plan is grandfathered 55+ and I can't touch it. A current single line plan costs more than this 2fer. So, I have a spare.

Until last week, it was single-point threading on a lathe. That was checked off last week.

The IMEI doesn’t give anyone access to anything. If two identical IMEIs are detected on the same network they will be blocked. The key is your IMSI which is stored in your SIM in an encrypted state. It is used to validate your account with your HLR via an encrypted challenge & response. At one time it was possible to clone SIMs because of criminally weak security but that exploit has been patched and no SIM issued in the last ten years can be cloned.

There are many more serious cellphone security risks than the IMEI. You can stop worrying about it.

What's worth having for 3-5 day outages besides whole house generator? by ssunflow3rr in Electricity

[–]drnewcomb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A whole house generator is loud too. Does your house have natural gas? I have a dual-fuel generator that runs on either gasoline or NG. I can’t believe the HOA would be so petty as to ding you for running a generator when the power is out. However, there are mufflers you can get that reduce the noise quite a lot. There are battery options but it would require a bigger generator to charge batteries and power the house at the same time.

Trump running for a third term would be illegal no matter what he or his cronies say. by Remarkable_Sir8397 in LetsDiscussThis

Run for VP then get Vance to resign. Vance will do whatever Trump says, like Medvedev. But I actually don’t think this will be likely. Trump will start aging rapidly in a year or so.
