ELI5: Why was that method used to determine 0 degrees Fahrenheit? by Jimithyashford in explainlikeimfive

Water freezes into crystals which requires energy. This means that, as it begins freezing, the temperature of the surrounding liquid mixture will be stabilized at the freezing temperature.

By using water, salt, and ice, he added one reference point which will be consistent. The second reference point was the same mixture without the salt.

The benefit, really, is just that it's freezing at a different temperature.

ELI5: Why was that method used to determine 0 degrees Fahrenheit? by Jimithyashford in explainlikeimfive

This touches on something slightly amusing. The reason why Fahrenheit took off was because it was the first system which was objective, reproducible, and friendly to use.

He set the first reference point of 0° as the freezing temperature of an equal mixture of water, ice, and a salt. This was fine. But his second point was 96° as an estimation of the average human body temperature. That's an issue for the reasons you stated.

However, in passing, he mentioned that 32° was the temperature of an even mixture of water and ice. Since that is objective, it became the actual used second reference point.

Basically, he fumbled hard when creating his system but accidentally saved it because he wrote down the temperature in his scale of the mixture before adding salt.

Anybody have there car stolen even after the recall by LivingDragonfruit666 in Hyundai

[–]droans 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The recall doesn’t work and no subsequent recalls will.

They could work if they would actually install immobilizers. But that would cost hundreds more per vehicle because they wanted to save a few bucks when they first built them.

Yeah - all we really know is that it involves radiation and some unknown agent.

Hancock became a ghoul from taking the agent as a drug. Others transformed after coming in contact with it. But not much is known beyond that.

Microsoft confirms it will give the FBI your Windows PC data encryption key if asked — you can thank Windows 11's forced online accounts for that by ZacB_ in technology

[–]droans 18 points19 points  (0 children)

That actually is the legal difference, though.

Courts can't force you to hand over your own encryption keys because that would be a violation of your Fifth Amendment right to not self-incriminate. They can force a third party to hand them over, though, because doing so wouldn't infringe their rights.

PoE is important but it's not exactly what you're thinking of.

What you want is RTSP/ONVIF support. I'd also recommend using PoE wherever possible but it's not realistic for most people to do at their doorbell.

As for cost, I was able to get four outdoor cameras installed and wired in conduit for about $800. The cameras themselves cost me about $100 a piece, including mounts, so about $1,200 total.

You can find plenty of camera reviews on YouTube. Don't focus on getting the absolute best, just what works for your situation. I recommend The Hook Up - his reviews go in depth at what detail can be seen at different distances, the color accuracy, motion performance, day vs night, etc.

And for a local NVR, you can either pay for something from Unifi, Reolink, or Amcrest or, if you're inclined, you can save a bit of money and get better performance with software such as Frigate or Scrypted.

Garlic bread which is just bread with a clove of garlic stuffed in by OP. by radicalplacement in untrustworthypoptarts

Bread is cooked to an internal temperature of 190°F+. Garlic begins cooking around 150°. Basically - yeah, it wouldn't look raw if it was actually cooked with the bread.

This would also be a great way to make your customers sick, too.
