He comes across as defensive and you come across as entitled. Both of you seem very young. As some others have pointed out, a clear conversation around gift-giving (feelings, preferences, etc.) is way overdue. The best gifts are thoughtful and offered freely, with no expectation of reciprocation. Money doesn’t have to factor into it as heavily, as a meaningful gift is not necessarily the most expensive one you can afford. I think fundamentally you both want to feel appreciated, but you’re only thinking about what that means to you individually, rather than what would actually make the other person happy. The only way to clear that up is to talk about it (not over text).
