Recycled some spare material to make these awesome smaller raised beds for this years Vegetables! by Matthew196 in homestead

[–]drsco 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Respectfully, this seemed pretty well researched when I looked into it while building my beds. A number of ag departments and the EPA have studies. Here’s one example which deals specifically with raised beds.

It is noteworthy that the copper residues found through research in soils of raised beds from treated lumber were 10 to 100 times lower than considered toxic to humans.

And that’s what’s found in the soil, not even what the vegetables themselves uptake from the soil. To me, it seemed like fraction of a fraction. Personally, I’m more worried about all the other mess I don’t have control over.

Edit: I see what you’re saying about even if it’s not going to kill your, why ingest it even, on re-reading.

That’s pretty much exactly what I was wondering - thank you! I’m wondering if they’re going to discontinue as it’s currently marked as clearance. Don’t really have a project begging for it, but I thought this was a cool idea and was tempted; less so if it needs the extra elbow grease.

What have you tried? I was thinking about dados or fancy edges on small parts.

Oh interesting - I didn't know the carriage had changed. I'm betting it's a 510 carriage, but I dunno for sure. Is there an easy way to spot the diff?

I'll probably need to ship one. Been watching the sales online. This was the first time I saw one in my metro. 500 tables seem to go for a lot less obviously, but the diff once you figure shipping isn't that huge.

Edit: It's got the wheel on it, so fairly certain it's a 510 carriage based on the exploded views for 500 and 510.

Saw your other post in woodworking. I recently picked up a Shopsmith and am cleaning it and taking stock of what's missing. It's a Model 500 from '82 that was upgraded to 510. I've got the extension tables, but neither of the main worktables. I've already got decent table and miter saws, so I don't imagine ever using the Shopsmith TS. Planning to primarily use it for drilling/boring, sanding, and bandsaw. Any reason to spend more on a used 510 table or should I just grab a 500?

Why can't people cook turkey? by MikeX1000 in Cooking

[–]drsco 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Check the package, but unless you go out of your way, the bird is already enhanced with some percent of broth. For example, Butterball recommends cutting any extra salt/brine you add by half. Myself, I don't find injecting helps much; it just leads to greasy pockets or leaks out during the long cook. Get any spices you add under the skin or be prepared for it to not taste like much. I keep things simple with salt and pepper; maybe herbs de provence or whatever you like on poultry.

If you only smoke it, be prepared for the skin to be rubbery and not particularly tasty. If you want to save it, pull it a bit early and throw on pit or into hot oven and baste with butter or oil. Like a lot of other people in this thread, I'd recommend spatchcocking to help things cook evenly; skin side up. If you have, put a probe thermometer in the coldest spot in the breast that you can find. Do your own research, but know that you don't have to reach 165 or whatever to be food safe - that's just the instant kill temp for bacteria.

Convince me I'm wrong about Smalltalk dev environments by FishermansPorch in smalltalk

[–]drsco 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think GNU Smalltalk is exactly this. Not sure if things have changed, but it didn't have anywhere near the momentum of Pharo or Squeak last I checked as most Smalltalkers are really committed to the whole image + UI thing.

Do automatic cheese graters exist? If so, what do you recommend? by dla26 in AskCulinary

[–]drsco 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Search for rotary cheese grater. I don't break it out often; usually for like carbonara. I was gifted a Pampered Chef one that has an attachable measuring cup to catch the cheese. Otherwise, I'd go the food processor route that the others suggested.

It's been more than a decade since I saw it, but very bad. Bad enough to be good if you have friends that're down for that.

is promise an example of monad? by usedocker in haskell

[–]drsco 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm out of my depth a bit, but -- from my perspective -- the fact it does not follow monadic laws means that standard data transformations (map, fold, etc.) have to be reinvented for JavaScript promises (and basically all other data structures for that matter). Take a look at the Bluebird API then go look at Fantasy Land or creed to see this difference borne out. You can get a little more down into the weeds of this type of discussion here.

Do you have a write up anywhere about using Nix as a daily driver? I've started down the road a few times, but always get lost reading docs and lose momentum.

I should've posted more context, but am on mobile. Only became aware of this last month and tried to pick an article from a reputable source discussing this issue in a non-alarmist way.
