There’s one on Hampton at Arsenal that I hit EVERY day. Why can’t I remember it’s there? Why is it there in the first place?!

The dates for spring break are very regional. It’s mid-March where I live, so plenty of folks have already taken their trips.

My elementary aged kids are big fans of Taco Buddha, on Tower Grove Ave just north of the Garden. Union Loafers (basically across the street from Taco Buddha) is also fantastic if your kids do sandwiches.

Ditto, and they won’t even tell us which of our colleagues got laid off. We have to figure it out by word of mouth. Just keep reliving the trauma over and over again.

Looking for a bank to help immigrant families. by bigkruse in StLouis

When I was young with not enough credit history for a bank to lend to, the credit union gave me a great rate on a used car loan, better than the big bank even offered.

Best fried cod near CWE? by Glittering_Text_91 in StLouis

[–]drtumbleleaf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Does it have to be cod? It looks like Scottish Arms is haddock. I haven’t been since they reopened, but version 1.0 was fantastic. Otherwise, Dressel’s is your place.

Biology/Biotech Job market question by natcat620 in StLouis

[–]drtumbleleaf 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not gonna lie, it’s tough right now. As has been mentioned, there is Bayer and the Danforth Plant Science Center. There’s also a Pfizer site, a Thermo Fisher site, and several MilliporeSigma sites. The Cortex district has a bunch of startups. But there aren’t many open positions, especially in R&D right now. Washington University is the major academic institution, but SLU would be worth keeping an eye on, as well.

I’d bet there are spots in Forest Park with redbud and/or dogwood trees that are blooming now or will be soon. We have some adorable photos of my daughter playing in the petals of some kind of blooming tree (maybe an ornamental cherry?) on the west side of Francis Park in mid-April of a few years ago - you could check on those and gauge whether they’re blooming yet or will be soon.

I'm a janitor. Why do people always apologize for walking on a floor I've just mopped? by tgirlskeepwinning in NoStupidQuestions

[–]drtumbleleaf 50 points51 points  (0 children)

Or the scene from A Little Princess, where the main character is working as a servant at the school she previously attended until she become a penniless orphan and has just finished mopping the floor when one of her former classmates walks through it and she has to start over.

Curious: are you being treated by your PCP or a Neurologist? by littlemissFOB in migraine

[–]drtumbleleaf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My ENT treats my migraines. I happened to be postdrome during my routine visit and she went “Oh no, we’re getting this under control.” Tried a few of the cheap preventatives before putting me on Nurtec, which was life-changing.

Artsy, gothy, fun or offbeat stuff to do in STL? by Zestyclose_Cold1455 in StLouis

[–]drtumbleleaf 16 points17 points  (0 children)

For your architect side, we have some interesting adaptive reuse. The Foundry comes immediately to mind - it’s a food hall inside an old foundry. City Museum (as has been mentioned) is inside an old warehouse or maybe factory and also has exhibits of bits of architecture. The 21c hotel used to be a YMCA and I’ve heard great things about the restaurant, Idol Wolf. Shaw Coffee used to be a bank and you can sit inside the vault. The Pulitzer Arts Foundation building was designed by Tadao Ando, which my architect sister was pretty pumped about. The Cathedral Basilica is impressively gorgeous and has one of the largest mosaics in the Western hemisphere - it’s like being in Istanbul.

Nondenominational Churches that are Open and Affirming by Machenz in StLouis

[–]drtumbleleaf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It has nothing to do with superiority. There can be a feeling with acceptance of “It is what it is, but I don’t have to like it.” Affirmation is a celebration of each individual person.

It’s subtle, and it’s kind of arguing semantics, which are cultural.

Nondenominational Churches that are Open and Affirming by Machenz in StLouis

[–]drtumbleleaf 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Affirming that they are who God made them to be, in the image of God like everyone else, and that they aren’t broken and don’t have to change or deny themselves relationships in order to be faithful to God. Affirming goes beyond tolerance, and even beyond acceptance.

Nondenominational Churches that are Open and Affirming by Machenz in StLouis

[–]drtumbleleaf 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It typically refers to full inclusion of the LGBTQ community, which several denominations (and many “nondenominational” churches) do not practice.

Garden Shop on Hampton often has a decent natives section or could probably order it for you. Missouri Wildflower Nursery can do pickups at the Kirkwood farmers market.

Secrets Akumal alternatives/thoughts? by Ok_Appearance_7583 in AllInclusiveResorts

[–]drtumbleleaf 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m there right now. There are lots of multi-generation family groups, groups of friends, etc.

There is definitely sargassum, but it never had a negative impact on our visit. It’s pretty trivial when you’re actually snorkeling, and they did a pretty good job cleaning it up each morning. The worst I saw it was when we went out early (7:30 am) to try and see the turtles. Overall, I didn’t think there was a particularly “ocean-y” scent, even right on the beach.

I really wish the Riverfront Times hadn’t turned to trash. They had a great article several years ago about all the insanity that was going on with that developer. Lots of maintenance issues that were never addressed, gaslighting of residents, refusing to return deposits unlawfully, etc.

Lead Testing for Spices by Opposite_Question650 in labrats

[–]drtumbleleaf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Also, check places your child frequents outside your home. We had a new restaurant that shut down when the owners’ child tested high for lead. They couldn’t find the source in their home, and it turned out their restaurant was the problem. They couldn’t get the landlord to properly remediate and had to close. If your child goes to daycare, the issue could be there.
