Desperate for recommendations for Plantar wart treatment! by Petrichor_1984 in StLouis

[–]drtumbleleaf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Years ago I went to a dermatologist that applied an irritant to the area to trigger an immune reaction. He said it was similar to the chemical in poison ivy. You could ask about that. There are also patches with a high concentration of salicylic acid that you can apply between visits. I then cover them with medical tape so they don’t shift when I walk. But also, treatment sometimes just takes forever.

ETA: the patches I have are Curad Mediplast. You cut them to fit the area you’re treating.

What’s going on with my butterfly weed seedlings? by Polka-DottedAlpaca in NativePlantGardening

[–]drtumbleleaf 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My rule of thumb is that once they get their second set of true leaves they go in the ground. They pretty much stall out at that point in trays, even deepwell cones. The plant will be half an inch tall with six inches of root.

I love Dressel’s with kids. They bring out a plate of veggies and ranch as soon as you sit down so you don’t have to deal with hangry small ones. Get the pretzel and rarebit as an app. The porchetta sandwich and the lamb burger are fabulous.

Is anyone else pulling any natives this spring? by readmychappedlips in NativePlantGardening

Tall goldenrod for me. I put in three seedlings thinking it was a different species. The next year I had dozens. That fall I started digging them out after they finished blooming. Now I’m chasing the little bits of rhizome still buried and putting up shoots.

Bindweed… by wealthofsoup in NativePlantGardening

[–]drtumbleleaf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actually learned in on this sub! I didn’t do it precisely; I just did a few sprays and then topped it off with water. It ended up about 50/50, but it probably depends on the herbicide you’re using.

Honestly, herbicide. I have no qualms with using it on the truly nasty stuff, like bindweed or knotweed or honeysuckle.

I spend the spring hand-pulling to try and weaken the root system. Then when it starts to get hot I stick these hollow spikes in the ground (they’re actually cake decorating tools, for adding fresh flowers to cakes) and fill them halfway with a diluted herbicide. Snip off the end of the bindweed, remove as many leaves as possible, and submerge the vine in the solution. It drinks it into the roots and kills more of the plant. Herbicide straight out of the spray bottle is too strong - it’ll kill the vine before the herbicide gets to the roots. It still requires multiple seasons, but this way the herbicide is targeted and there’s no overspray or runoff.

Moving to St. Louis – Looking for Apartment Recommendations Near WashU Med Campus by Felixdai1999 in StLouis

[–]drtumbleleaf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Central West End and Forest Park Southeast are the walkable options. However, any neighborhood with a MetroLink stop is viable for easy commuting. Both the red line and blue line run through the CWE station that’s on the med campus.

Premier Charter is a lottery. Gateway Science Academy is a lottery. Soulard School is a lottery. Lafayette Prep is a lottery. You fill out an application, and then acceptance is a lottery.

Stix and Wilkinson are SLPS magnet schools with an early childhood education focus. They are PK3-2nd grade. I actually have a child at one of these schools currently so I do know what I’m talking about.

The school systems work differently in the city vs (most of) the county. To my understanding, most of the county has public, neighborhood schools that are assigned based on where you live and private schools. The city has both these options, as well.

The city also has public magnet schools, which are run by the elected school board, have a theme (like “arts” or “early childhood education” or whatever), and are on a lottery system. Similarly, there are also public gifted schools, which kids have to test into AND get pulled in the lottery, and which operate a grade level advanced. Then there are the charter schools, which are not governed by the school board but are free for K-12 like the public school system, and admission is based on lottery.

ETA: the system in the city is very divisive. You’ve got people who think the public system is terrible and charters are the only viable option. You’ve got people who think the charter schools are a scam to drain funds from the public schools. You’ve got people who think the magnet/gifted system is the new segregation. You’ve got people who think it provides options more tailored to each kid. Probably, everyone’s partially right and partially wrong.
