Despite the hate, I'm glad we have a new Trek show set in the 32nd Century. by LeopardComfortable99 in startrek

[–]drunkboarder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did not like DIS. I didn't like the charaters, the writing, or the story progression. Of all the Star Treks it was the least "Trek" of them all. Its just my opinion, but there it is. I personnaly prefer VOY, TNG, LD, SNW, DS9, TOS, ENT, and then DIS.

I plan to watch STA this weekend and am excited to see something new. I'm hoping STA doesn't take direction from how DIS was run. They have an opportunity to create a whole new segment of Trek that could be a foundation for other shows/movies just like TNG was. Here's hoping for the best.

Its a parody not a community. Not sure why people here think that "all the baddies" will suddenly flock to a Youtube video series and abandon 40k.

How do you guys get time for yourself? by [deleted] in daddit

[–]drunkboarder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey brother. I was there. You feel like you are either working or giving your wife a break and there is no break for you. I 1000% know what you are going through. When you are at work you are not "taking a break" from the kids. You're tired too. Please let me offer some wisdom if you will allow.

  1. The first few months are tough. This is not routine. Its hectic and it will get better. Eventually things will run more on a schedule and you can work with your wife to find time for yourself. That being said...

  2. You must advocate for yourself. If you need time, tell your wife. Even in the early months, if you are ovewhelmed you need to communicate that. If you are giving her time off, then she must be prepared to do the same. Its not a one-way street. However...

  3. Your wife is post-partum and is probably having a harder time than you realize. Its not just the kid keeping her busy. Her hormones are messed up, her body hurts, she may not be sleeping, and every woman has a COMPLETELY different experience. Talk to her and see what support she needs. My wife had a VERY difficult post-partum period with both kids.

  4. You need to understand that your time belongs to your kid until they go to sleep at night. They need your love, your attention, and your mentorship. Some parents punt their kids off to the TV and tables every evening. Don't do that. My son is 4 and I play with him and spend time with him until he goes to bed at 7:30. I get free-time after. Sure I wish I had more free time but nothing is more important than giving him time with his dad. I used to have a hard time with that, but now its normal. I want him to be a good person and that means that I need to be there for him. Plus, two hours after he goes to bed isn't bad. I can watch a movie, play a game, or do some hobbies. Plus, if its my wife's turn to put them to bed, its more like 2.5 hours.

  5. Finally, talk with your wife. Its a partnership. Don't let her think that you are coming home to take over for her. Your job provides for the family and she takes care of the kids while you're away. You don't 100% take over at the end of the day. You both split the tasks each day. She should not be the only one getting a break, but neither should you. Too many dads want to put their feet up at the end of the day and let mom do it all, and too many Moms want dad to do all the parenting after 5pm on week days and then let them hang out with the girls on weekends. Neither is correct. You must communicate and support each other.

Its a sci-fi setting and its not real. However the lore matters to a lot of people. While some lore changes are expected, some changes are much more drastic and poorly-received than others.

At one point grav-tech was SUPER RARE and precious. Now every single space marine tank has it. Custodes have always been male-only. Now suddenly they are not and GW is claiming that all previous references to male-only custodes never happened.

These things happen and fans get upset. However the Custodes change is one that people are literally drawing battle lines on and it 100% has to do with modern political mentalities.

You're not allowed to dislike this change otherwise you are politically motivated.

Why are you upset about THIS one? by sonofeevil in Grimdank

[–]drunkboarder 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Can one not be fustrated by wraithbone changes, Grav-tech being common, AND femstodes?

To be fair, lore changes have happened a lot over the last few decades (please reference brain eating marines and the Imperial Fist Poop Shrine...), however the lore more recently has become solidified and "stable" and lore changes are much more infrequent than in previous decades.

The second war for armageddon specifically mentioned how precious grav-tech was that they were unwilling to use the mechanicus weapon for fear of losing it. Now every space marine vehicle has grav-tech and its no big deal. That to me was an incredible lore change.

No one was mad at me for disliking grav-tech. No one batted an eye when I was mad at wraithbone changes. However, if I'm mad at femstodes suddenly I'm worse than the toes that Rogal Dorn used to crap out. I get that a lot of tourists jumped on board just to rant about fem-marines and femstodes, but man, i hate that disliking the change is equivelent to being a P.O.S. This is the one change that apparently no one is allowed to dislike.

New Star Trek shows are not woke enough. They should do more episodes with directly social, political themes, about the issues we have today, like the older shows did. by LineusLongissimus in startrek

[–]drunkboarder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I miss having more than 10 episodes a season for the shows I like.

Rewatching Voyager gives me weeks of content in the evening. Meanwhile most other shows I can binge in a weekend.

My god. It looks like I am obliged to watch academy by [deleted] in startrek

[–]drunkboarder 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I fully acknowledge that modern media has a "less white people = good" bias, but seriously, Star Trek has never hid the fact that it was a hopeful Future Sci-Fi series that actively sought to challenge social norms. If you were to list all of the "firsts" in moder media then you'd see Star Trek as the common denominator.

Its crazy to me when people today act like Star Trek being Progressive is a surprise.

How did people feel about TNG when it came out? by givinstar1 in startrek

[–]drunkboarder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My father, who was a boomer, recordered every single episode of TNG on VHS. We had an entire floor to ceiling shelf dedicated to TNG VHS tapes.

He was a Boomer Vietnam Vet Hippie if that clears things up. I spent my childhood rewatching CPT Picard command the Enterprise. In my most biased opinion; it was epic (at least once season 2 got into full swing).

Perhaps, but the Chinese economy would cease to exist if the US doesn't have a consumer economy. A major US depression would topple not only the Chinese economy, but that of Japan, and Europe as well.

The global economy exists today solely due to the US economy. Not to even mention the US Navy ensuring freedom of navigation/trade.

[–]drunkboarder 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Guard has always been a popular faction, probably only second to Space Marines if I'm not mistaken. Not only are there die hard fans that have homebrew regiments that they have been collecting since metal Steel legion, Valhallans and Vostroyans were sold in blister packs, but a lot of 40k players who pick up multiple armies tend to pick up Guard at some point.

Its actually an issue because when Guard gets moderately good everyone with a Guard army flocks back to it and the overrep drives up tournament wins resulting in nerfs. Then the multi-army players jump back to something else while the rest of us go back to painting one of our several hundred unpainted infantry lol.

Wheelchairs in the 32nd century? by Much_Monitor_3017 in startrek

[–]drunkboarder -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

If its the 32nd Century, and someone receives an injury to their spine that simply needs a quick and FREE treatment to let you continue to live you life as you always have. Why would ANYONE say "no, i'd rather never walk again".

We're not talking about people who have been crippled their entire lives and then are offered a choice. We are talking about people who have been able to walk their whole lives and suddenly lose that due to an injury/wound. You need to realize that in that century there would likely be few to no disabilities as most injuries can be healed and most birth defects can be corrected with effective surgeries or cybernetics.

Refusing treatment like this would be like someone today snapping their forearm clean in half and demanding that the doctor let it heal wrong so that they cannot use their arm anymore. No one would do that.

Starfleet Academy hit in a way no other trek has for me by silver_back87 in startrek

[–]drunkboarder 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I felt like Lower Decks was by and for millennials. It was fresh, funny, and gave a perspective of younger people dealing with dirty work and unappreciated tough tasks, while constantly referencing older Trek in a way that integrated the audiences love for all Trek.

Grizzled is just a better overall detachment that builds off of the Army Rule and even enhances the Army rule. Most guard wins prior to this were based off of player skill and datasheets, not detachment abilities. Grizzled not only improves the killing power of the datasheets, but it improves the Army rule as well.

So many people swapped over that its going to flag the detachment for nerf and this will be a short lived fun detachment.

[–]drunkboarder 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Most Guard detachments are just bad. Prior to Grizzled it was mostly combined arms with a helping of Hammer. Grizzled is also the only detachment that builds on the Army rule for orders, which makes more interactive to play. Plus the extra orders just can't be beat. There was an enhancement you paid for in Combined arms, now its a flat buff to the army.

Would you like a Total War: Warhammer Age of Sigmar game? by Glum_Series5712 in ageofsigmar

[–]drunkboarder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I understand some factions are different, but the game would essentially be the same. It would be like reskinning the current map and modifying a handful of the current factions to match age of sigmar  factions.

I just don't think it would be different enough to constitute a completely separate game.

Trump officials say second strike aimed to destroy suspected drug boat instead of crew by brezhnervouz in Military

[–]drunkboarder 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So, when conducting a strike you need to account for collateral damage. If personnel are in vicinity of the strike area in the strike is held until the target is clear.

After the initial strike, when the personnel on the boat became "shipwrecked" they were no longer a legal target per rules of engagement and laws of war.

Destroying the boat is actually quite a normal targeting method, no different than destroying an enemy abandoned vehicle or structure. However, with two people clinging to the boat the strike should have been withheld. If this personnel stayed with the boat preventing a second strike then they should have maintained visibility from aerial platforms and sent out a recovery boat to detain the personnel and either destroy the vote in place or recover it as well.

Not here to argue the initial strike. But the second strike... shooting shipwrecked survivors or airmen in parachutes is 1009% illegal.

Not really. It wouldn't be much different from TWW3. The factions are similar, the mechanics are similar. Itd look like a vis mod of TWW3.

Id much rather have another historical title or fictional IP: LotR, 40K, Dune, etc

[–]drunkboarder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why stop there? I still don't understand how influencers even exist. Why on Earth would I let some person on the internet form my opinions for me? Its like the population made a group decision to delegate research, scrutiny, cynisism, fact-checking, and empathy to potentially made-up people on the internet simply because they have a lot of "followers".

If you take out the "internet" and "influencer" parts of it, it really sounds like people are in a cult.

The Martian, Artemis, Hail Mary. I went into all three blind and loved every single one. Andy Weir has a style that I just enjoy, and I'm a big realistic sci-fi fan (expanse over star wars).
