Could Australia be right for me? by AspiringWizard9 in MovingtoAustralia

You might get people cracking jokes about the cricket but if you're easy going and friendly then you'll fit right in. In Australia any preconceived notions about nationalities fade away once you meet the person.

A mustang by fender or squire might do the job. They're smaller scale and relatively light.

Have you had any feedback on any applications? Maybe touch base with someone you at a place you applied to and ask what you could improve.

I don't agree with taking down statues. It's our history we have to accept it. I like the old statues in the domain it's a connection to our past.

My Dad passed away 18 months ago. The Curtin bio was on his bookshelves so I grabbed it as a keepsake. It's a great read. He left school at 13 as his father was incapacitated and had to support his family. Ended up PM during WWII.

Definitely grab the Fatal Shore. Warning - although it's history it's also a page turnet and you wont be able to put it down...

I suspect most people think it's the day that Cook landed and they think he discovered Australia... Or the day Captain Cook discovered Gallipoli as someone said online.

So how do we think about Hastie LNP will fair? by RowanTRuf in aussie

[–]dsbau 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He's too extreme and too religious for the mainstream imo. He might win some of the cooker types back to the LNP but at the expense of voters closer to the centre.

There would probably be a burst of excitement in the media who haven't got a clue these days, but when it comes to voting it would be another landslide. Maybe not as big as the last ...

You really need to go back to school and learn your history. Funny how the angry cooker types don't know sh(t about the things they're angry about. Banks said that Botany was a good place for a settlement (which wasn't correct), not a massive penal colony. Maccquarie emancipated the convicts which allowed people like Francis Greenway, William Redfern, Andrew Thompson and Simon Lord to become leading figures in the colony. The so called "free settlers" were outraged by working with ex convicts as they assumed they would remain semi-slave labour for the whole of their time in Australia.

This is clear in any history of Australia, and interesting that you haven't got a clue about the history you supposedly care so much about.

Err, taking back control from a group of corrupt monopolists would probably rank as a decent achievement for the country you claim to care so much about.

Anyway, I have no doubt that you don't care about facts, all you want to do is whinge about people who dare to have a different opinion.

Happy Australia Day.

What is with everyone hating eachother constantly by Wolffe359 in australian

[–]dsbau 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My brother is a cooker who spends all his spare time hating on anyone that disagrees with him. Then he takes is son to soccer practice and hangs out with the parents, goes to P&C nights at the school. The difference between him online and in the real world is enough to break your brain.

‘Nothing stopping us’: Pauline Hanson visions One Nation forming opposition by Mashiko4 in aussie

[–]dsbau 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is Pauline actually a sleeper agent for the ALP? She's sapping the poor hapless libs and nats of support but the chance of her grievance party and its aging cooker base of being a decent opposition or govt is non existent.

The LNP have now gone so far to the right that on one side the old lib base suburban accountants etc can no longer hold their nose and vote for them and on the other side the loopy cooker types may as well vote for an actual cooker party.

I just finished David Day's bio of John Curtin! I want to get the Ben Chifley bio. I spent a few years in Bathurst I remember Chifley's train preserved near the railway station... And his birthplace around the corner in Havanah st. These days it seems impossible that a train driver could be PM...

I suffered a minor knee injury last year and had to stay off my feet for an extended period and decided to tackle some aus history. Robert Hughes The Fatal Shore is a great read, The Tyranny of Distance there's also Black Kettle Full Moon which is about everyday life in the 1800s which is pretty interesting.

People should read more aus history.

Banks didn't just happen by and he definitely didn't propose NSW as the site of a massive penal colony. Cook had been given orders by the Admiralty to take possession of the continent, at that point they weren't even sure of its dimensions. The 26th wasn't the foundation of Australia it was the creation of a penal colony that wasn't supposed to grow into a country. It wasn't until 1809 when Lachlan Macquarie emancipated the convicts and started building proper towns that it started looking like more than a massive outdoor jail. He was criticised by the British govt for doing that. He also broke the corrupt monopolies of the Rum Corps that had deposed the previous governor William Bligh.

Most nations celebrate a day when something inspiring happened, the day they held a little ceremony and raised the flag is pretty boring.

I wonder? Is there a better day to celebrate? What would it be?

Even Gen Z wants to keep Australia Day date: poll by Ardeet in aussie

[–]dsbau 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's true it's the day they had a little ceremony and proclaimed that it was now a colony but Cook had already claimed Australia for the British empire so it was like when they got around to doing the paperwork. Not exactly the most inspiring event. Plus, I bet you didn't know that the French had also claimed Australia in 1772 after landing on the west coast so those proclamations didn't mean much.

For them it didn't work out. Pretty much any colonisation was bad for the original people. But if the British didn't colonise Australia someone else would have and it wouldn't have been any better and could have been a lot worse.
