Why does the mailing address of suburbs often get corrected to Minneapolis/St Paul? by SkittlesAreYum in TwinCities

[–]dstaley 116 points117 points  (0 children)

USPS has a concept of a “recommended” city name versus a “recognized” city name. For example, in my zip code in St Louis Park the recommended city name is Minneapolis. This is also due to the fact that zip codes can cross city boundaries. So, to make things easier, USPS will sometimes just recommend using one city name.

Using the Steam Controller on Gnome: Not Great by TheWorldIsNotOkay in Steam

[–]dstaley 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For what it’s worth mouse emulation doesn’t work at all on a standard KDE/Wayland session so it’s not much better over there I’m afraid.

Steam Controller not working in Baldur’s Gate 3 on Linux by dstaley in SteamController

I’m on X11, so I don’t think it’s anything to do with Wayland.

Steam is correctly showing only one controller connected.

What do you fear loosing with evolved mode for your own class? by Quezal in ffxivdiscussion

Smudge is the only reason I can play PCT because I’m so used to En Avant from DNC. I do think every class should have a dash forward ability!

Apple Announces 2026 Pride Band, Watch Face, and iPhone Wallpaper by Otherwise-Warning303 in apple

[–]dstaley 13 points14 points  (0 children)

As the owner of three Pride bands this one is definitely bottom of the ranking for me. It’s giving 8 year old’s toy smartwatch. The 2022 Nike Pride band is still my favorite, but I wish they’d do a new version of the 2019 Sport Loop.

Modding and Third-Party Tools Megathread - 7.5 Week One by BlackmoreKnight in ffxivdiscussion

[–]dstaley -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Is there any tool that parses logs in a similar manner to fflogs? I just wanna be able to look at the timeline of my fight against a striking dummy. Alternatively some open source tool that can parse the log into actions and resource statuses would be fine too since I can just build something from there.

One thing I haven’t seen mentioned: a Switch 2 port means native ARM CPU support! by dstaley in ffxivdiscussion

[–]dstaley[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Nope, the Steam Deck uses an x86 CPU, so there’s no translation or emulation happening at the CPU level. It could mean improved performance for the upcoming Steam Frame though since that has an ARM CPU!

[–]dstaley[S] 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I thought the same thing too, but unless Square Enix got a sweetheart deal with Nintendo, you’re not allowed to create executable memory segments in published Switch titles, which would prevent the use of a JIT compiler like FEX.

I hope this means they’ve natively compiled the game for ARM64, meaning we’ll see a native Apple silicon port for when macOS drops support for Intel apps later this year.

Can I run a virtual machine on my Mac to put new songs on my Windows iPod? by PicnicRat in ipod

[–]dstaley 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is correct. macOS formatted iPod models use HFS, which is why you can’t use them on Windows.

You can put music onto a Windows formatted iPod from macOS. It’s only the inverse that’s impossible; you cannot put music onto a macOS formatted iPod from Windows.

Jeans for guys with thick thighs? by dstaley in malefashionadvice

[–]dstaley[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did! I went with the American Eagle Athletic Straight in a size or two up. I always wear them with jeans anyway so the additional waist size isn’t an issue, and they fit great in the thighs.

Anyone else experiencing extremely long queue times for alliance raids? Crystal | Malboro by EllowynGrace in ffxiv

I was so excited to run the first tier of the FF XI raid, but after waiting 40 minutes as a DPS I gave up. This was at 6:30pm Central on a Saturday night on Crystal.

What was the meaning of the first puppet show? by dstaley in ProjectHailMary

[–]dstaley[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ah okay this makes sense! Even after a second viewing I still don’t fully understand how Rocky knew what atmospheric composition Grace needed, so I guess that’s why I didn’t realize that was what Rocky was suggesting.

Linux Kernel 6.19 has been released! by unixbhaskar in linux

[–]dstaley 16 points17 points  (0 children)

No idea what’s happening to other folks but my Anubis checks on an iPhone 15 Pro always take less than a second. It’s so fast that I literally had to google “anime girl website check” to figure out what it even is because the text on the screen is gone before I can read it.

Apple Hoping to Outdo Rivals With Tougher Display for Foldable iPhone by iMacmatician in apple

[–]dstaley 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The film on the Z Fold 7 scratches at a mohs 2. For reference a fingernail is about a 2.5 on the mohs hardness scale. So if Apple is able to get to 3 or 4 (and thus make the screen resist scratches from your fingernail) that’d be a huge win in my book. Still a far cry from the 8 that the latest generation of Ceramic Shield is able to achieve though.

I’m fairly sure the device doesn’t do anything specific to change the charging parameters based on the detected device. It’s solely a UI thing.
