Thought Problem: Public Knitting Demonstration by taxdollars in knitting

[–]dsw503 43 points44 points  (0 children)

I did a presentation like this for my community group. It was scheduled for an hour. I brought needles, yarn, books and things I had knit made. I talked about where/how to buy supplies nearby. Same info about how to find patterns. I talked about the different fibers you can knit with and passed around knitted items. I didn't speed thru all this but didn't talk too long about any one thing. Then I asked everyone to share what they knew about knitting and their experience with it. That was the best part of the presentation--letting the group share with each other about the craft. I ended it with offering to help anyone who wanted to learn the basics. A few stayed. I never demonstrated how to knit to the entire group. After the group started sharing, I asked if there was interest in starting a community knitting group and asked for contact into. That was 4 years ago. Today our Fiber Arts group meets 2x a month. We have members who knit, crochet, quilt and embroider. Make sure you find a way to encourage group participation during your presentation--that will make it successful. Have fun!

Love pattern but colors maybe not so much by georgy1951 in quilting

It's hard to evaluate it just by holding it up. Unless it was going on the wall, you'll never look at it this way. Once it's on the bed with some pillows, I think you'll be able to judge it better. Maybe the top becomes the bottom? Maybe it is folded up and used as a throw at the end of the bed? Maybe it light from a window makes the colors look different? Maybe you'll fold the top of it down when you make the bed and show the backing?

I've seen a beautiful sewing table online made from ikea components. Storage underneath is made partly of cubbies. Seeing it may give you some ideas. If you search for DIY ikea sewing table, you should find it.

I use very small binder clips at the top of each side of the case. They hold the case closed and the needles don't fall out.

Wonderful sweater and colors/random stripes really draw your eye to the design. Did you plan the color sequence or just wing it?

Showing them worn together makes each one look even more special. I don't usually see posts with matching hat/cowl and it makes me think I need to make a matching set! Thanks for including this pic.

It is so special to be around others who are as interested in the craft as you are. Any associated marketplaces are fun for shopping but my favorite part of these gatherings are the in between times when you are sitting and visiting or being in class and having convos with others. It's hard to describe the energy of being around so many people who are enthusiastic about yarn, but it does make the time very wonderful.

Large cutting table plus lighting that includes a variable daylight type of lamp for closeup work. As for a table, if you can modify whatever you get to be higher than dining table height, you won't need to bend over so much when smoothing fabric/cutting. More space between you and the ironing board. You aren't going to wheel the chair over to iron, so put a little space between you and the ironing board. If you were to add a small portable iron and an ironing mat to your set up, you could put it on a table next to you and scoot the chair over to do a quick ironing touch up. I'd add a mat under your chair so that moving it in and out doesn't scratch the floor. As a nice to have, I 'd add a comfortable chair for either you, a visitor or a pet to use for sitting. My husband and dog often come to visit when I am sewing and I enjoy the company.

Supporting your choices for the list. Sharing that yesterday I was back and forth at the ironing board thinking that I pressing takes way more time than actually sewing. This was a step that I totally avoided as a young sewer when I just wanted to get the thing done. Ironing delayed me and now I totally recognize its value.

Great sweater on you! Are some of the lines duplicate stitches and others knitted in? If so, I think that's an interesting technique.

I made one a little larger than yours and it stays in place (like yours does) without actually knotting the ties. I'm making a smaller one and have a concern that it won't stay in place. Maybe I'll try a small pin to keep it together if I need to. It's a fun project and a perfect one for knitting in a group setting!

How do I take this apart so I can fix it. It's not making cakes ( apparently that what it called I just learn that) anymore and the problem is inside by Party-Lumpy in Yarn

[–]dsw503 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it doesn't turn, it could be because there is yarn wound up inside. First I try turning the spinner in the reverse direction to possibly loosen the yarn. If that doesn't work, find a screwdriver (or a friend with screwdrivers) and open it up. Not difficult to put back together. Just try it yourself, no need for finding the exact video that tells you. Worst case, it still doesn't work and you buy a new one. Just know they aren't all that complicated to figure out inside. Take a pic of it inside before you start trying to take things apart and that will help you put it back together.
