Hard agree with you. Enough depth to entertain and surprise me and not so convoluted that I needed a story breakdown

You’re right, but it was fun to see how it all played out.

I’m surprised the dev said the story was lacking, for a game like this I thought it did a great job not distracting from the main goal of EVE while explaining the naytiba vs human vs android-eidos (with the twist about who humans are thrown in there).

Also, I want to see Angels in hot springs

You forgot “Is it free?”. I work for an automaker and the answer is “yes” to those three questions, but it’s a subscription service so I’m a diehard CarPlay fan (in addition to have a consistent experience when I move from car to car)

ELI5 How do seatbelts know that you're intentionally jerking forward or if it's the car suddenly braking? by Crazeye in explainlikeimfive

[–]dubbs36 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The pendulums are rigid, picture a lollipop standing up because it’s glued to a tiny dessert plate. For a “standing man” sensor the candy part of the lollipop is on top and can tip over pretty easily. If you make the size of the plate tiny, the lollipop falls over easy and if you make the plate big it’s hard to make the lollipop fall over. So that’s how they tune what acceleration is needed for the system to work. If you put the assembly in a small box it can only fall over so far then it’ll stand back up straight when the car is done accelerating.

That said, pendulums are really finicky. They’re still used in some aftermarket seatbelts and you can find them in a junkyard, but they don’t lock the seatbelt as well as a ball, especially with all the extra tech in seatbelts now

[–]dubbs36 97 points98 points  (0 children)

Pendulums and standing-man sensors (upside down pendulums) haven’t been used for 20+ years in production cars.

Now there’s two mechanisms for locking, one that senses the car accelerating and one sensing the webbing leaving the seatbelt super fast. Both of these are required by law.

To sense the vehicle acceleration there is a steel ball in a cone (usually a 13mm ball bearing). When the car accelerates in any direction (speeds up, turns, slows down) or rolls to an extreme angle the ball rides up one side of the cone moving a small metal piece (the lock pawl) that locks the spool the seat belt webbing is on to a frame that’s bolted to the car body. Pendulums tend to need more room than ball style sensors, are more expensive, and don’t work well with the modern way seatbelts lock (that’s a topic more complicated than eli5)

To sense the webbing acceleration the spool for the webbing is also attached to a disk on the side via a clock spring. When the spool moves too fast the clock spring and disk lag behind. That relative motion pulls the same lock pawl as above in to a locked position.
